Vertebrate ethograms for secondary schools
Peřka, Jaroslav ; Řezníček, Jan (advisor) ; Pavlasová, Lenka (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to create an educational programme for teaching ethology at grammar schools, in which theoretical knowledge will be directly linked with practical activities. To fulfil the goals of this ethological educational programme there is used the creation of ethograms. The whole educational programme is divided into three parts. In the first part pupils are acquainted with the theory of ethology and individual types of animal behaviour and also with the principles of direct observation of animals, the creation of ethological records and their evaluation. In the second part pupils observe directly a chosen animal in zoological gardens or similar institutions and on the basis of their obtained theoretical knowledge they describe its behaviour to previously prepared forms. In the third part pupils create ethograms of vertebrates based on the gained data, which are part of an expert seminar paper in a form of an expert text, a power-point presentation or a poster. In these papers pupils keep the basic format and content rules for ethogram creation. To determine the suitability, adequacy and benefits of this educational programme there is used the evaluation of the output papers created by pupils, a questionnaire and the findings acquired from the realization of the whole programme. The...

The main target of this work is to compare selected areas of educational system to the rural school in Krasoňov and today's school. It concernes matters of teacher, student and school. This thesis deals with the preparation of dermoplastic materials of birds and mammals. They are described in detail specific methods of preparation from the collection of material to its final treatment. The first section summarizes the theoretical knowledge concerning preparation of dermoplastic models and osteological material. The second part is dedicated to knowledge survey of high school and primary school students concerning recognition of birds and mammals dermoplastic models. The results are processed by descriptive statistics. Keywords: taxidermy, dermoplastic models and osteological material, skulls, teeth, birds, mammals.
Interactions of apes and monkeys in tropical pavilons in the Prague zoo
Kloudová, Kateřina ; Vančata, Václav (advisor) ; Řezníček, Jan (referee)
Interactions of apes and monkeys in tropical pavilons in the Prague zoo The thesis is focused on the observation and subsequent assessment of the social behavior of primates, who are kept in a zoological garden. Part of the work is devoted to general characteristics of primates and their systematic classification. It also contains specific information about Prague zoological garden and its history. This work describes mutual interaction and social behavior of individuals within particular species of primates and their behavior once placed in common exhibition together with other animal species, both in closed quarters or pavilion, as well as in free range. The main objective of my work was to observe and evaluate social behavior from the point of view of both above mentioned cases. From the longtime observation we can conclude whether different groups of primates were gathered appropriately and if any mutual conflicts among them have occurred and could threaten the stability and relationship within monitored group. Regarding the contact with other animal species it was verified by the observation that chosen combination supports animal husbandry and helps the zoo staff to create better terms and conditions for breeding, corresponding to natural environment as much as possible. Keywords: zoo,...
Stereotype Behaviour of Horses
Škantová, Blanka ; Řezníček, Jan (advisor) ; Jančaříková, Kateřina (referee)
This thesis focuses on clearing up the concept "stereotypic behaviour of horses" describing its causes, signs and possible ways of its elimination. Next purpose was to observe group of horses by specific breeders. Data, that may have something to do with stereotypic behaviour of horses (age, sex, use of horses, type of housing etc.), were based on this observation. Stereotypic behaviour of horses is a taught behaviour, especially visible by domesticated horses. The behaviour is unnatural, repetitive and does not have specific purpose or function. There are many causes of stereotypic behavior, mainly bordom, anxiety, lack of exercise, influence of nutrition or genetic factors. Based on my own observation of 43 reared horses, 10 of them (23,26%) were behaving stereotypically. The most often type of stereotypic behaviour was weaving (3 horses), wind-sucking (3 horses) and box- wlking (2 horses). The other I have observed were raking, clacking lips, swing chain, chewing wood, aggressiveness. Followed group of horses was divided into 4 subgroups according to their use, 3 subgroups according to their type of housing and 3 supgroups according to their age. The best way of housing is pasture breeding, With this type of housing was stereorypic behaviour visible only by one followed horse. By other types of...

TITLE: Manufacturing taxidermy mounts and their use as teaching aids AUTHOR: Jana Mazalová DEPARTMENT: Department of Biology and Environmental Studies SUPERVISOR: RNDr. Jan Řezníček PhD. ABSTRAKT: The main subject of this thesis is focused on preparation of taxidermal mounts with use of mammal bones and skins and their use as teaching aids. The target group are school children both of elementary and secondary schools. The thesis describes methods of bone preservation and cleaning, skin tanning and preparation of taxidermal mounts. I deal in it also with preparation of large vertebrates' skulls and preparation of taxidermal mounts. The procedures are described in details and the following chapters include photos of dissections made by me. Preparation of 4 bird and 6 mammal species is described. For each description, search of recent literature and PowerPoint presentation is included. KEYWORDS: preparation, taxidermal mounts, skin, vertebrates' skulls
Census of the Feral Pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica) Population in the Selected Localities and Flying Corridor of the Radlické Valley in Prague
Štěpán, Jiří ; Řezníček, Jan (advisor) ; Plesník, Jan (referee)
Census of the feral pigeon (Columba livia f. domestica) population in the selected localities and flying through the corridor of the Radlické valley in Prague. The diploma thesis is dealing with the research of the number of the pigeons (Columba livia f. domestica) flying through the corridor of the Radlické údolí, with the exploration of the next pigeons' flying routes, with inventorying of the number of pigeons in the localities Smíchovské nádraží and Na Knížecí and with dependece of the number of pigeons on the abiotical conditions, season, day time and the time of the spring seeding and harvest. The food ecology of pigeons was also investigated within the process of inventorying in the locality Na Knížecí. The final chapter is focused on coloring of the individuals in the different Prague localities. The research was realised from July 2012 to November 2013. The folowing methods of research were used: observation, marking with the wing tapes, modified linear method of addition. The results of the diploma thesis indicate that number of pigeons in the observed localities change especially in the time of seeding and harvest. Numerical fluctuations are not so extreme because the group of the resident pigeons always stays in the city. The spectrum of the food offered by local inhabitants doesn't...

Title: Creation and verification of educational programs for students of lower secondary education in ZOO Pilsen The diploma thesis is focused on the ZOOs in the Czech Republic and their educational activities. The most examined one is Zoological and botanical garden in Pilsen, for which I created two educational programs including worksheets for students and teachers. The educational programs were then tested at a selected group of students from 8th grade of lower secondary school. The evaluation was based on the success of students in solving tasks in the worksheets. The practical output of this thesis are designed educational programs (methodology for teacher) and worksheets for ZOO Pilsen (programs Mysterious Africa, Far Australia) including correct solution.
