Experience of simultaneous interpreting into "B" languages. Interpretation in the EU institutions

Tato diplomová práce se zabývá tématem, které je v letech po rozšíření Evropské unie velmi aktuální, přesto je velmi málo teoreticky i empiricky zpracováno. Po vymezení pojmu tlumočení do cizího jazyka (tzv. "retouru") a jeho přijímání translatology a tlumočnickou obcí je nejprve podán přehled historie a současného kontextu tlumočení v Evropské unii. Následující část je věnována kritickému přehledu translatologických teorií ve vztahu ke směru tlumočení - touto otázkou se dosud specificky zabývalo překvapivě málo teoretických prací. Proto bylo nezbytné před formulováním hypotéz pro náš empirický výzkum provést jakousi syntézu dosavadního stavu bádání nejen přísně translatologického (zejména deverbalizační teorie pařížské školy a Gilélv model úsiiO, ale také v oblasti očekávání posluchač(} a vnímané kvality tlumočení. Vedle toho hypotézy čerpaly z některých současných psycholingvistických teorií o využití fonologické paměti (zejména Baddeleyova modelu artikulační smyčky). Na základě těchto teoretických poznatkél byl formulován výzkumný předpoklad, že tlumočníci pracující pro evropské instituce jsou fakticky bilingvní, proto neexistují větší rozdíly v kvalitě obou směrél tlumočení a preference tlumočení do A není založena na objektivních faktorech, a že při poslechu v rodné řeči lze lépe využít fonologickou...

Culture and interpreting cultural factors in interpreting into the mother tongue and into a foreign active language

Tato diplomová práce rozebírá vlivy kultury na tlumočení, konkrétně pak na tlumočnické strategie při převodu institucionálních pojmů. Kultura je komplexní společenský jev, který určuje naše chápání vnějšího světa. Členové jednotlivých kulturních společenství sdílejí stejný způsob života a hodnoty, kterými se liší od jiných kulturních společenství, přičemž hlavním jednotícím prvkem a vnější projevem těchto společenství je jazyk. Definujeme-li tlumočení jako zprostředkování mezikulturní komunikace, je zřejmé, že tlumočník musí disponovat rozsáhlými znalostmi kultur, mezi jejichž jazyky pracuje, a rovněž chápat složité procesy, které v mezikulturní komunikaci probíhají. Tato práce se zaměřuje jak na kulturu všeobecně a na vztahy mezi kulturou, jazykem a myšlením, tak i konkrétněji na kulturní souvislosti Evropské unie, na vlivy rozdílů kulturně-jazykových společenství při tlumočení pro EU a mezinárodní organizace obecně a na multikulturní aspekty tlumočení při "retouru" do cizího aktivního jazyka.

Transfer of stylistic components of political speeches in simultaneous interpreting: research on French-Czech documents

Tématem této diplomové práce Je stylová složka řečnických projevů politického zaměření a problematika jejího převodu při simultánním tlumočení z francouzštiny do češtiny. Práce je teoreticko empirická. V první části se pokusíme definovat a charakterizovat zkoumaný žánr s ohledem na faktory, které mají vliv na průběh mezijazykového převodu. Zaměříme se zejména na pragmatické aspekty řečnických projevů a na možnost existence rozdílů mezi nimi v závislosti na jazyce a na kulturně jazykové příslušnosti řečníka. Vycházíme z předpokladu, že mezi francouzštinou a češtinou existují rozdíly ve způsobu vyjádření subjektivních postojů autora prostřednictvím stylisticky příznakových, expresivních jazykových prostředků. Domníváme se, že ve francouzských řečnických projevech se expresivní a emocionální složka projevuje častěji a s větší intenzitou. Projevy českých řečníků jsou naopak stylisticky neutrálnější. Naším cílem je tuto hypotézu ověřit. Repertoár prostředků subjektivně motivované aktualizace výrazu je velmi bohatý, od prostředků mimojazykových (posturika, proxemika) přes parajazykové (intonace, melodie) až po verbální. Connection between notation and quality of consecutive interpretation

The topic of notation, an important tool used in the process of consecutive interpretation, is discussed primarily in prescriptive works. Claiming that notes are a significant back-up for the interpreter's memory, the works suggest several principles that interpreters should observe in order to produce an optimal piece of notation. Nevertheless, detailed studies analyzing the influence of notes on the interpreter's performance are scarce. Many specialists have an unfavourable opinion of the possibility of an objective evaluation of interpretation quality; on the other hand, the interpreters' performance is subjected to day-by-day assessment by the market. In this area of research, it is difficult to carry out experiments and evaluation because of the small size of samples, unauthentic laboratory conditions and the individua! nature of both the notation and performance.

Daniel Gile's effort model and its application on texts with numerals and enumerations

Tato teoreticko-empirická práce se zaměřuje na model úsilí Daniela Gila a jeho aplikaci na simultánní tlumočení textů nasycených číselnými údaji a výčty. V teoretické části model podrobně popisujeme a analyzujeme a aplikujeme jej na simultánní tlumočení. Dále definujeme základní problémy a nedostatky spojené se simultánním tlumočením projevů z francouzštiny do češtiny u textů nasycených číselnými údaji a výčty z hlediska nároků na pracovní kapacitu v důsledku nasycenosti textu i specifik francouzských číslovek a jejich převodu do češtiny. Při tlumočení číselných údajů a výčtů se zvyšují nároky na pracovní kapacitu, zvláště na poslech a analýzu a na paměť, čímž může dojít ke snížení množství kapacity dostupné pro poslech a zpracování následujících částí projevu. Na základě postulátů Gilova modelu úsilí jsme stanovili pracovní hypotézu, podle které v důsledku vzniku deficitního řetězce dojde ke zhoršení kvality přetlumočení u nenáročných úseků, které následují bezprostředně po náročných segmentech obsahujících číselné údaje a výčty. Deficitní řetězec je důsledkem individuálního deficitu u některého z úsilí či celkového zahlcení pracovní kapacity. Dílčí hypotézou je, že výkon profesionálních tlumočníků bude celkově kvalitnější a zhoršení nebude se zvyšující se obtížností úseků předcházejících sledovaným místům...

Professional interpreter in the 21st century: new technologies and social networks

The topic of this master's thesis is new technologies and social networking sites in the field of interpreting. The theoretical part discusses how, over the course of time, technological advances have altered not only the face of interpreting itself but also the way interpreters work, and presented them with new possibilities. This part also briefly deals with the history and functioning of social networks, namely Facebook, Twitter and LinkedIn and examines the possibilities social networking sites offer in terms of marketing. The empirical part presents conclusions drawn from the study. The purpose of the study was to determine general tendencies in the use of new technologies and social networks by Czech interpreters. The questionnaire distributed online focused mainly on the following points: ownership of smartphones and tablets, awareness of technical novelties in interpreting, use of social networks for professional and marketing purposes. A total of 150 people took part in the study. The analysis of collected answers revealed that the number of tablet or smartphone owners amongst the participants is quite high, that participants are skeptical towards nontraditional ways of interpreting and that interpreters use social networking sites rather for communicating within the interpreting community...

Theoretical predictions of the impact of a noisy channel on interpreters' performance in simultaneous interpretation and their empirical verification

This thesis explores the issue of noise in the simultaneous interpreting process, using the concept of noise as defined in information theory and the model of communication developed by Claude Shannon. The theoretical section of this thesis first offers a brief explanation of the basic concepts involved in information theory, followed by a description of Shannon's model. Selected models of interpreting are then introduced based on this model of communication. A list of potential types of noise is then presented based on the literature examined that may have an impact on the interpreter during simultaneous interpreting. The empirical section of this thesis consists of a questionnaire and an experiment. The questionnaire determines to what extent interpreters find the potential types of noise from the list created in the theoretical section disruptive in their work. The list of types of noise is also expanded based on respondents' answers. The questionnaire also determines what strategies respondents employ to overcome adverse factors. The new types of noise and strategies employed are described in this thesis using open-ended answers from the respondents. Self-assessment and peer assessment in interpreter self-training

The theoretical-empirical thesis deals with the importance of self-assessment and peer assessment for interpreter self-training. The first part is focused on the theoretical foundations of the thesis. First, the thesis covers the question of interpreting quality, its definition, and the assessment of interpreting in interpreter training. The thesis then presents the expertise theory, both in general and in the field of interpreting studies specifically, and provides recommendations by several theoreticians as to how to apply this theory in interpreter training. The next chapter clarifies certain concepts from learning theory that often appear in literature on interpreting didactics. The theoretical part concludes with a presentation of two types of tools that can be used in interpreter self-training, namely e-learning tools and reflective diaries. The empirical part then analyses data collected in two pieces of research. Ingrid Kurz and her Contribution to the Development of

The MA thesis Ingrid Kurz and her Contribution to the Development of the Theory of Interpreting is a descriptive theoretical study dealing with the work of the conference and television interpreter, Interpreting Studies scholar and professor of Translation Studies at University of Vienna Ingrid Kurz, born Pinter. This thesis analyses individual stages of her research and looks into the development of her opinions and interests, which can be followed chronologically in her articles, studies and extensive publications. It also informs on teaching and interpreting projects of this researcher and, last but not least, reflects her contribution in the area of interdisciplinary cooperation. The interconnection of psychological and interpreting education inspired her towards the first experiments in the field of simultaneous interpreting.
