Biological activity of plant metabolites IX. Antimicrobial activity of some secondary metabolites
Váňová, Jana ; Opletal, Lubomír (advisor) ; Karlíčková, Jana (referee)
Váňová, J.: Biological Activity of Plant Metabolites IX. Antimicrobial Activity of Some Secondary Metabolites. Diploma Thesis, Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové, Department of Pharmaceutical Botany and Ecology, Hradec Králové 2008, 62 pp. The antibacterial activity of 4 selected plant extracts was evaluated against E. coli O157:H7 and Staphylococcus aureus. Extracts were prepared by extraction in 80% ethanol and subsequent percolation. Two methods were used for determination of minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC). In the first case they were not reached the values of MIC expected for E .coli on the basis of the other literature studies. All samples within the concentration range of 5 - 0,005 ppm which were prepared in two series were negative even after 48 hours exposition. In the second case it was reached better results for E. coli and S. aureus. Two series of serial twofold dilutions within the concentration range of 25 %-0.02 % were prepared. The lowest values of MIC were exhibited by Thymus vulgaris extract, especially against Gram-positive indicator strain. Nevertheless the values of MIC remain very high (3.13 % for E. coli, 0.2 % for S. aureus). For determination of minimal bactericidal concentration (MBC) in E. coli O157:H7 and E. coli O55 seven...

International trade in pangolins (\kur{Manis} spp.)
VÁŇOVÁ, Jana
The aim of this work was to evaluate international trade with Manis. spp. according to the CITES database during the period 2002-2013. Manis spp. was classified in appendix II CITES in 1995. In 2000 there was an unsuccesfull attempt to reclassified Manis spp. to appendix I CITES. In this year the zero quota was set for Asian pangolins for commercial purpose. A rapid increase of an illegal trade was noticed after the setting of zero quota. The most frequent trade with pangolins was in these forms: 1) derivatives, 2) specimens, 3) scales, 4) live pangolins and 5) skins. Asian pangolins´ species were traded mostly in forms of derivatives, specimens, scales and skins in the period 2002-2013. M. javanica and M. pentadactyla with medium and large distribution area were quantitatively the most traded species, respectively. Main importers of Asian forms of pangolins were: USA (derivatives and specimens), China (scales in kg) and Indonesia (scales in pieces) and Mexico (skins). The African pangolin M. tricuspis was the third most frequent species in the international trade and was traded especially in form of live pangolins. M. tricuspis lives in one of the largest distribution area. Main importer of live pangolins was Italy. Breeding pangolins in captivity is due to the specific feeding requirements demanding. There are about 46 individuals of pangolins in Zoos all over the world, whereas in Europe there are only 2 pangolins in the Leipzig Zoo.
Evaluation of breeding of cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in the Czech Republic
VÁŇOVÁ, Jana
The aim of this work was to evaluate breeding of cheetah (Acinonyx jubatus) in the zoos of the Czech Republic according to the yearbooks of zoological gardens. Breeding of cheetah has started in the Czech Republic (zoo Praha) in 1933.. Plzeň zoo has been breeding the subspecies Acinonyx jubatus soemmeringii from 2010, the other zoos do not mention subspecies. The total number of cheetahs bred in the zoos in the Czech Republic is 17 individuals to 31.12.2012. This number of individuals is also the long term average from the beginning of breeding. The highest number of cheetahs (25 individuals) was bred in the years 1972-1975. and then in the years 2004-2007, with the peak of 34 cheetahs in 2005. The lowest number of cheetahs was bred in the Czech zoos in the years 1995-1997, it was 9 cheetahs. Nowadays cheetahs have been bred in 5 zoos in the Czech Republic: Dvůr Králové, Olomouc, Ústí nad Labem, Praha and Plzeň. Number of cheetahs in private breeding in the Czech Republic consisted almost 50 % of cheetahs kept in zoos to 31.12.2012. Number of bred cheetahs in the Czech zoos creates 1 % of bred cheetahs in zoos all over the world. Breeding cheetah cubs was successful in 3 Czech zoos Dvůr Králové, Praha and Olomouc. Zoo Dvůr Králové zoo is the 7th most successful zoo in breeding of cubs in the European scale. There was born 63 cheetah cubs from the first breeding in 1988 to 2012. On the second place there is Praha zoo. Breeding of cheetah cubs began here in 1972 and it was one of the 3 zoos in the world where breeding cubs was successful at that time. In 1972-2012 there were born 53 cubs. Praha zoo is the 9th most successful zoo in breeding cubs in European scale. Olomouc zoo bred first cheetahs in 2004 and 18 cubs were born here up to 2012.
