The thesis Dr. Jan Herben - Journalist and Politician (1857-1936) maps the life of this distinguished journalist and politician of the late 19th and early 20th centuries from his studies till the end of his professional career. It is based on literature about Jan Herben or about the period of turn of the century, on periodicals of that time, and archive materials found in the Museum of Czech Literature in Prague and in Herben's summer house in Hostišov. It focuses mainly on the period of publishing the Čas periodical which under Dr. Jan Herben became the main daily of the Realist Party of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, on affairs linked to the publication of Čas, including the disputes over the authenticity of two ostensible early medieval Czech manuscripts, a wave of protests following publication of the first editorial Our Two Questions by Hubert Gordon Shauer, the Hilsner affair, or Dr. Jan Herben's accusation of embezzlement of funds collected for orphans in the town of Most. The thesis also briefly describes Herben's post-war journalistic career in Lidové noviny daily, in the humour weekly Nebojsa and in Národní práce daily, his career as a writer as well as a politician, MP and Senator. The bachelor thesis focuses at the beginning and evolution of the Dějiny a současnost journal (The History and the Present) from the late 50s of the 20th century till the prohibition of publishing the journal in 1969. The media, historical, political, and legal context is accentuated. The work also describes features, contents, and the changes of media at the end of the 60s generally. It shows the change of the original intention of the publisher in 1963, when the journal opposed the regime. In 1965, after an encroachment of the Communist Party, the ambitions of the journal temporarily stopped, however, during the Prague's Spring, the journal became progressive again and promoted the ideas of reformed communism.

The transformation of memory institutions in Europe and in the CR with focus on their "media acts"
Fridrich, Tomáš ; Bednařík, Petr (advisor) ; Sekera, Martin (referee)
The aim of the thesis "Memory institutions on the threshold of the 21st century: media activities of the National Film Archive and the Deutsches Filminstitut" is to explain the context in which the archives are acting, and in particular explore specific media operations of two leading European film archives. The focus of the first part of the text is to describe the changing conditions mainly related to digitalization. The traditionally rigid institutions must adapt to this new conditions if they want to onform to the standards of cultural institutions of the 21st century. The main part of the text then analyzes the media actions of the National Film Archive and reference institution Deutsches Filminstitut. The thesis analyzes the specific media actions from onlinepresentation of the institution up to the work with journalists and, if necessary, proposes the optimization of existing processes. The reason of focusing just on media activities is the increasing need to develop new audiences, recruited from persons who were up to this moment not interested in the activities of the archives, and last but not least, the fact that a good media activity can be a compelling argument when approaching sponsors from the private sector. In the perspective of continual reduction of state contributions to cultural...

Havel, Jakub ; Sekera, Martin (advisor) ; Krejcar, Robert (referee)
The aim of this work is at least partially to map the position of the scientific theme in magazines produced in the end of 19th century and by the beginning of 20th century with focus on technical progress reflection and partial presence of additional scientific themes. The theoretical part of this work summarizes the role of science in the Czech society from the end of 18th century and presents the main personalities, turning points and processes (mainly industrial revolution) that formed the media discourse by the end of the 19th century. The practical part is dedicated to analyzing of chosen magazines Čas, Naše doba, Česká revue, Český svět a Světozor (Illustrovaný svět) in various periods of time. Firstly, there is a connection concerned with the year 1886, the age of manuscript polemics and "our two questions". Subsequently, it is analyzed the position of science at the turn of the century that was considerably influenced with the general process of technique penetration through society praxis. The last period researched is the pre-war time between years 1912 - 1914, when technical inventions were highly used in the military sphere and were also responsible for a massive militarization.
Newspapers published in Austria in the years 1918-1939 by czechoslovakian ministry of foreigen affairs
Lukešová, Olga ; Köpplová, Barbara (advisor) ; Sekera, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis investigates propaganda practices of the Czechoslovakian Ministry of Foreign Affairs applied especially to the local press of Vienna during the interwar period. The aim of the thesis is to explain the reasons that made the Czechoslovakian authorities take these steps and to reconstruct the events surrounding the subsidizing of the Vernay publishing house. A part of the investigation is an analysis of the press published under this house (Der Tag, Die Stunde, Die Börse, Die Bühne, Die Sphinx and business books of Compass) - its history, political orientation, columns, journalists, characteristics, etc. The emphasis is placed on changes brought by the Czechoslovakian influence. The thesis studies activities of the journalists (not only in Vernay's newspapers) during the crucial moments of the history of the Austrian - Czechoslovakian relations (e.g. the Austro-German Customs Union of 1931) and then draws conclusions on the effectiveness the propaganda. In this regard, the aspects seen as the most problematic are especially the non-loyalty of some of the journalists, a wide awareness of the propaganda in both countries, and a choice of newspapers intended for the purpose of propaganda.
The position of the Prague journal(pražské listy)in the structure of czech press in the latesixties of the 19.century
Tůma, Ondřej ; Sekera, Martin (advisor) ; Krejcar, Robert (referee)
The main aim of my diploma thesis is to determine the position of newspaper called Pražský denník in context to other Czech newspapers of the second half of the sixties of the 19th century. That time was the period which represented the essential changes in development of the modern society and politics in Czech lands. Simultaneously, it is the period when the political journalism started to form. The activity of Pražský denník has not been studied in any research yet. This periodical is considered to be biased and insolvent because it is usually included into official pro- government newspapers. Such evaluation of this newspaper is done without any deeper content analysis. The interpretation of the Czech journalism, which is mainly focused on the effect of opposite newspaper (e.g. Národní listy) and had the main effect on the Czech national movement, does not pay attention to Pražský denník at all. Considering the fact that Pražský denník was published in cargo of 20 000 pieces we should not omit evaluating of this newspaper according to its effect on reader of that time. In my diploma thesis, I would like to focus on the content analysis of Pražský denník and to analyze the thematic composition and territorial focus of individual articles. My interest is also concentrated on the measure and...
The process of the gradual emancipation of the Czech press in the years 1966 - 1968 based upon the Rovnost (The Equality) daily, published in Brno
Hruban, Martin ; Cebe, Jan (advisor) ; Sekera, Martin (referee)
The thesis "The Process of the Gradual Emancipation of the Czech Press in the years 1966 - 1968 based upon the Rovnost (The Equality) daily, published in Brno" deals with the analysis of the Rovnost daily of the South Moravian Regional Committee of the Czechoslovak Communist Party in the years 1966 - 1968. Time boundaries of the thesis issue are limited with January 1966 - January 1968. In this period preceding the short liberation of media and journalist's work from censorship and command and control in the year 1968, it is possible to trace the germs of a process culminating in the several months of the so called Prague Spring. The reestablished genre variety and the stress on the informative role of the press, the ideological weakening, the searching for one's own graphic layout, together with the permanently rising importance of economic aspects of the newspaper processing, all these factors went along with the gradual liberation of media from the schematism and their position as a mere obedient instrument and performer of the will of the ruling communist party. The probe into the contents and operation of the regional daily of the Czechoslovak Communist Party Rovnost can also comprise an interesting complement to the historical research devoted to processes preceding the Czechoslovak events in 1968 and...
Social demokratic publicists in the post-February exile (1948-1953)
Horák, Pavel ; Čechurová, Jana (advisor) ; Sekera, Martin (referee)
This diploma thesis (Journalism of Social Democratic Exile after February 1948 /1948- 1953/) studies the history of social democratic party in exile between the years 1948 and 1953 with special focus on journalism, news service and propaganda. The thesis describes formation of party fractions and deals with how they defined themselves, communicated and presented themselves in the media. The thesis then goes on to analyse the newspaper format, production and financing thereof as well as the number of copies. It looks into broadcasting activities of social democrats and their plans related to the setup of illegal radio. Based on the cases of party secretary Vilím Blažej and Bohumil Laušman, the last party chairman prior to February 1948, the thesis analyses the question whether single groups within the party in the given time period tried by its journalistic activities to primarily influence events in Czechoslovakia or whether these efforts slowly faded due to rivalry between fractions and frustration over hopeless political situation and lack of audience in such an extent that media outputs were later on confined only to discussions within the party and to barely expressing political views.
