Three Scrambles for Africa
Zaayman, Wouter H. ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee) ; Budil, Ivo (referee)
This thesis examines three pertinent periods regarding Africa's relationship with specific countries and power blocks outside the continent from the period leading up to the colonisation of Africa followed by what is termed the Second Scramble which, analyses the process of competition and geopolitical tension between the two superpowers during the Cold War period, pertaining to expanding their influence amongst African countries and the extent to which the process excited geopolitical competition. The Third Scramble encompasses the period from the end of the Cold War to the present. Reviewing the process of Africa's relationship throughout these specific periods remains unfamiliar to the majority of academics not only in the Czech Republic but also internationally and presents a new field of research. Although Africa continues to be well researched within certain fields of social sciences, it is within the field of political geography and by extension, geopolitics that there remains a deficiency regarding comprehensive study and critical analysis of the subject in general. Compounded to this is the fact that the vast majority of research is by academics who themselves are not from Africa. Hence, a situation prevails, whereby the subject itself is viewed from the periphery as opposed to from...
Problems of quasi-states : typology and trends
Riegl, Martin ; Hnízdo, Bořivoj (advisor) ; Romancov, Michael (referee) ; Baar, Vladimír (referee)
Thesis "Questions of quasi-states: typology and trends" deals with a specific range of anomalous political units - the so called quasi-states. They represent an unfavourable anomaly in the political space after 1945 which, according to conventional wisdom deemed to be divided between the territories of sovereign states. The international community approach follows from it to their existence but it is strongly differentiated with respect to their heterogeneity. Thesis in its theoretical chapters focuses on the precise definition of terms of sovereignty, sovereign and quasi-state, which definition is in the current environment of political science the subject of academic debate. For this reason I mention the term quasi-state in different conceptions. Subsequently I suggest my own definiton of the quasi-state, which allows the elimination of terminological confusion. The practical part of the work responds to a frequent point of criticism, which is the absence of a comprehensive typology and the list of these specific political-geographical entities.

The thesis presents and highlights the most pressing issues for minority communities in these four areas, aiming to construct a comprehensive analysis of their status in Kosovo for the past 12 years. The thesis also scrutinizes policies, strategies and actions of the international administration and, subsequently, the provisional authorities in respect to minority human rights. Special emphasis is placed on the discrepancies between the proclaimed and the achieved, as the best measure of the international community's level of success in Kosovo. The thesis concludes that Kosovo is the part of Europe where minority human rights are least respected and where the oppression of members of minority communities by majority Albanian population is widespread and systematic. Furthermore, the international administration and the provisional authorities were both unable and unwilling to prevent and punish major violations...
The Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt: The Ideological Development, Contemporary Positions, Prospects
Hladová, Magdaléna ; Kučera, Rudolf (advisor) ; Riegl, Martin (referee)
The diploma thesis explores the ideological development, contemptorary positions and political prospects of the Egyptian Muslim Brotherhood. It follows the movement's long evolution on the background of its relations with the successive regimes of Nasser, Sadat and Mubarak, examines its current discourse on "Islamic democracy" including its stated commitment to political pluralism, the principle of citizenship as well as the connected subject of women's and non-muslim's rights, analyses its attempt to formulate a party platform and discusses the Brothershood's prospects in the politically closed environment of the Egyptian authoritarian regime. Obvious discrepancies notwithstanding, author argues, that if any meaningful pro-democratic reform in the Arab world is supposed to occur, some ways to integrate moderate Islamists into the formal political realm must be found.
