Socialism is work. The life of Rudolf Bechyně 1881-1948

The present thesis discusses the life of Rudolf Bechyně, the eminent Czech Social-Democratic politician of the first half of the twentieth century. The author studies in a practically chronological order the life's path of the poli tician, start ing in Moravia (sti ll dur ing the era of the Austro-Hungarian Empire), over the period of the First Republic of Czechoslovakia, until his exile to London during the Second Wor ld War when Bechyně, a s the Chairman of the Council of State, became together wi th the President Edvard Beneš the main leader of the Czech resistance movement abroad. Wi th respect to extant archival materials, the thesi s focuses more systematically on the description of Bechyně' s work at the Ministry of Public Supply, as well as on the last decade of his life when the politician was forced to revalue most of hi s atti tudes and principles. Al though the author tends to follow the traditional biographical pattern, through the fate of Rudolf Bechyně he furthermore depicts the fate of the Czech Social Democratic Party. A certain excursus of the thesis is presented in an attempt at a comparison of the socialist ideas and their differentiation under the influence of the Bolshevik Revolution; and in a separate case study of the politicalcultural review Nová Svoboda published by the left-wing...

Buildings of the representative offices of Czechoslovakia during the interwar period; strategy of their selection and acquirement

Czechoslovak Embassy and Consulate Buildings During the Inter-war Period: Selection and Acquisition Strategies In the Diplomatic Service of Austro-Hungarian empíre worked only few Czechs and Slovaks. For this reason the new established Czechoslovakia had to educate many diplomats and also to create its own network of embassies and consulates. This involved also the buildings. When choosing the right estates were above all important the following factors: representativness, security and costs. Own buildings provided better presentation opportunities and it was easier to adapt them for diplomatic function. Thanks to the stability of Czech currency in the interwar period were the costs for the buildings reasonable. For building, adaptations and equipping the buildings was used stable group of professionals. The critisism of purchase of some particular objects and its equipment was mostly sourcing from the relationships among some diplomats and political situation in Czechoslovakia. Protectorate Governments and their Legislative Activities

Zusammenfassung Die Diplomarbeit "Die Protektoratsregierungen und ihren legislativen Tätigkeiten" zielt darauf ab, den Leser mit den Aktivitäten der einzelnen Protektoratsregierungen im zeitgenössischen Kontext und mit deren Gesetzgebungstätigkeit zwischen 15. 3. 1939 und 5.5.1945 vertraut zu machen. Die Arbeit ist in drei Teile gegliedert. Der erste Teil trägt den Titel "Historische Pfad zum Protektorat Böhmen und Mähren". Dieses Kapitel ist in zwei Teile geteilt. Der erste Teil beschäftigt sich mit dem Ende der zwanzigjährigen Existenz der Tschechoslowakei auf der Grundlage von Verhandlungen von vier europäischen Mächten auf der Münchner Konferenz. Das zweite Kapitel beschreibt die Entwicklung und die Wende in der Politik der neuen Regierung mit Orientierung auf Nazi-Deutschland. Im zweiten Kapitel "Anfang des Protektorats" werden in ihrem ersten Teil die Nachtverhandlungen von Emil Hácha in Berlin und die gleichzeitige Sitzung der Regierung in frühen Stunden des 15. März 1939 beschrieben. Die Abgrenzung der Hauptproblematik des zweiten Teils dieser Kapitel ist der staatsrechtliche Status und vor allem die Analyse Hitler Verordnung vom 16. Sokol during the protectorate. Organized resistance of ČOS

Záměrem této disertační práce bylo postihnout sokolskou protinacistickou rezistenci jako celek. Výsledkem takto zaměřené heuristiky bylo ovšem brzké konstatování, že za současného stavu výzkumu protektorátní problematiky let 1943- 1945 není v silách autora zpracovat sokolský odboj druhé poloviny protektorátu na úrovni alespoň částečně adekvátní polovině první. Původní záměr nebylo možno realizovat, neboť šířka a složitost této problematiky (zvláště v závěru války) by si vyžádala řadu samostatných studií o významných rezistenčních organizacích, které v současné době nejsou v primárním zorném poli autora. Otázky, které ohledně sokolského odboje na sklonku protektorátu vyvstaly, se koncentrují minimálně do dvou základních okruhů, v nichž se jedná především o individuální podíl jednotlivých sokolů a sokolských skupin na protinacistické rezistenci let 1943 - 1944 a účast sokolů na českém povstání roku 1945.
