Prostor jako služba: první dekáda Národní technické knihovny (NTK) v nové budově

V průběhu posledních deseti let se Národní technická knihovna (NTK) stala nedílnou součástí kampusu technických vysokých škol v pražských Dejvicích. Budova, která v roce 2019 zaznamenala téměř milion návštěv, je oblíbená především mezi vysokoškolskými studenty, jak domácími, tak zahraničními. Moderní, inspirativní prostory umístěné přímo v srdci kampusu jsou velkou předností při podpoře studentů, vyučujících a výzkumníků, ale samy o sobě nestačí. Aby mohla knihovna svým uživatelům sloužit ve své plné kapacitě, musí budova též „obsahovat“ relevantní informační zdroje, služby a lidi, kteří je poskytují a rozvíjejí. V příspěvku představíme metody používané pro sledování měnících se informačních potřeb a návyků stávajících a potenciálních uživatelů NTK a pro vyhodnocování uživatelské zkušenosti s knihovnou. Díky poznatkům získaným prostřednictvím těchto metod můžeme soustavně uzpůsobovat naše prostory a služby tak, abychom lépe podporovali akademickou i profesní úspěšnost, zvědavost a konkurenceschopnost našich uživatelů.

V publikaci jsou zveřejněny vybrané údaje ze statistického zjišťování za uplynulý rok. Předmětem zjišťování je činnost veřejných knihoven a vydavatelská činnost. Mezi nejvýznamnější šetřené ukazatele patří počet knihovních jednotek, registrovaných čtenářů, výpůjček, návštěvníků, zaměstnanců, ukazatele o hospodaření, počet vydávaných titulů periodických a neperiodických publikací, audio, videodokumentů a e-dokumentů, údaje o zasílání povinného výtisku a distribuci.

Impact of the Directive on Copyright in the Digital Single Market on Libraries and Repositories

Pro činnost knihoven a repozitářů jsou z nově přijaté směrnice o autorském právu na jednotném digitálním trhu nejrelevantnější ustanovení týkající se výjimek a omezení. Tento příspěvek se ale zaměří na ostatní ustanovení (zejména opatření k dosažení řádně fungujícího trhu v oblasti autorského práva, tj. zprofanovaný čl. 17, týkající se užívání chráněného obsahu poskytovateli služeb pro sdílení obsahu online a čl. 15. týkající se práv k publikacím). Příspěvek podává přehled a kritický rozbor možného dopadu těchto ustanovení a analyzuje možnosti českého zákonodárce při jejich implementaci.

ZÍSKEJ – national system for sharing and delivering documents

A software platform called “ZÍSKEJ” (Get it) for documents sharing and delivery was designed and developed at the National Library of Technology as a nationwide system for public libraries in the Czech Republic. The project was supported by the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic. The system ZÍSKEJ is published as open source with a GNU Public License (GPL). ZÍSKEJ is a server application that is capable of managing user’s document requests through its web client or local integration using the available API. The system is based on a request management module that automatically handles the queue of incoming requests to deliver the document requested by end users or by libraries that serve end-users.

Meeting users in their spaces: key findings on discovery to delivery

OCLC Research has been studying how individuals get their information and resources and how they engage with technology for almost two decades. We have learned that convenience often is one of the factors that most drives individuals’ decisions for getting information and resources. However, convenience is a moving target and is dependent upon the context and situation of the individual’s need. Many factors will influence the decision-making process, such as how quickly the information or resource is needed, how important that information is to the individual need, and how much effort is required to get access to the information or resource. Our findings indicate that individuals often do not consider the library as the first place to get information and sometimes do not consider libraries at all. This often is attributed to the complexity and misunderstanding of library processes for acquiring resources and to not knowing resources or options for accessing and acquiring these resources through the library. Many individuals opt for open content since it is easy to discover and readily and quickly available in full-text. We have conducted semi-structured individual interviews with undergraduate and graduate/post graduate students and faculty in Australia and the U.S. to identify how they discover, access and acquire resources and why they make these choices and decisions, including their format preferences. We also have conducted focus group interviews with resource sharing and ILL librarians in Australia and the U.S. to identify their workflows and to discuss ideas to improve these processes to better meet the needs of their users. The findings from these interviews provide ideas for enhancing the discovery to delivery experience for both users and librarians.

The conundrum of resource sharing in Zimbabwe: case of academic libraries

Resource sharing has gained impetus among academic libraries as they seek novel and innovative ways to provide for the dynamic and complex needs of users. Zimbabwe is not an exception to the global trend of resource sharing in support of teaching, learning and research as evidenced by the establishment of sector-specific library consortia. This article explores the challenges and opportunities encountered by academic libraries in their endeavour to provide quality services. It will examine how library consortia, namely the Zimbabwe University Library Consortia (ZULC) and the College and Research Libraries of Zimbabwe (CARLC), have been able to provide for the information needs of their users at a time when budgets are low or inadequate and subscription costs to journals remain unaffordable. The article will examine the extent to which library consortia are exploiting information and communication technologies (ICTs) and trendy initiatives, for example Open Access (OA). It will also examine how academic libraries, through resource sharing platforms, have been able to exploit ubiquitous technologies and build on from the traditional interlibrary loan (ILL). The article will recommend a strategy based on a model to strengthen access to scholarship through resource sharing.

Pár kroků od pomoci, pár kliků od zdroje: podpora studentů v Národní technické knihovně

Případová studie s popisem jednoho dne fiktivního uživatele Národní technické knihovny (NTK), která vznikla na základě poznatků získaných prostřednictvím dvou mystery visitingových šetření, dvou etnografických studí a několikaleté praxe s poskytováním služeb. Umožňuje získat představu o benefitech, které uživateli používání prostor knihovny přináší, a nastiňuje potenciální přínos, který by mohl mít z komplexního využití nabízených zdrojů a služeb, které zůstávají často nerozpoznané anebo nevyužité. Již nyní by se měly akademické knihovny připravovat na budoucí studenty, kteří nastoupí ke studiu v příštích dvaceti letech.

Let’s take a look at the IT infrastructure of this library and talk about IT architecture in general with practical examples right here where we stand (or sit). How do we do things? How do we solve security issues? What about identities? Do we need a cloud and what kind of cloud? How do we manage our network and computing resources? Let’s look at those „simple and boring“ things like storage, compute and network, let’s talk about digital signage and AV stuff in here. Why? Because it matters, these are the fundamentals of every library as a building, as a place to study and as a place where data is properly and logically stored so that everyone can get meaningful information out of it.

Moving from Find & Get and Towards Use & Understanding

Considering the ubiquitous nature of networked computers, the traditional role of libraries is not as critical as it used to be. In other words, the time-honored library activities of collection, organization, preservation, and dissemination of books & journals is quickly being supplanted by the ever-present Google search. Thus, the problem to solve is less about finding & getting information but rather about using & understanding the information found. We continue to drink from the proverbial firehose. This does not foretell the demise of libraries nor librarians. Instead, it represents an opportunity to provide enhanced and value-added services above and beyond our collections. These services can be articulated as action statements such as but not limited to: analyze; annotate; cite; cluster & classify; compare & contrast; confirm; count & tabulate words, phrases, and ideas; delete; discuss, evaluate; find opposite; find similar; graph & visualize; learn from; plot on a map; plot on a timeline; purchase, rate; read at a distance; read closely; read at scale; review; save; share; summarize; tag; trace idea; transform; etc. This presentation elaborates upon these ideas with an emphasis on the possibilities of natural language processing & text mining in libraries.
