Genus Sergentomyia and its role in the transmission of Leishmania

Sand flies, members of the subfamily Phlebotominae do not occur in the CzechRepublic, but as near as in the Mediterraneantheir fauna is quite abundant. Sand flies can be found approximately between 50řN and 40řS. Species of genus Phlebotomus, Sergentomyia and Lutzomyia include medically and veterinary important vectors of viral and bacterial diseases as well as leishmaniasis, one of the most important human protozoal diseases. 321 years have passed since the first sand fly was described, but only 110 years ago intensive taxonomic work began. Over the years many classification systems have been proposed, mainly based on division of morphological characters. The classification is not clearly settled even after several taxonomic revisions and many questions remain, especially about genus Sergentomyia, which is repeatedly mentioned in connection with transmission of mammals' leishmaniasis. This bachelor thesis gives contemporary summary of taxonomic knowledge of sand flies; special attention is given to genus Sergentomyia.
Sand flies as hosts of monoxenous and dixenous trypanosomatids

Sandflies (Diptera: Psychodidae: Phlebotominae) are blood-sucking diptera and important vectors of various pathogens including protozoas from the order Kinetoplastida. In my bachelor work I am dealing with distribution and development of monoxenous and heteroxenous trypanosomatids in sandflies, with special attention to non-leishmania trypanosomatids.
Rats of the genus Rattus: their biology and food preferences

Genus Rattus falls into the most extensive mammalian family Muridae, concretely to subfamily Murinae. The Norway rat (Rattus norvegicus) and black rat (Rattus rattus) are the best known species of genus Rattus. Although the laboratory rat is widely used as model organism, the wild species of genus Rattus cause huge economic losses in agriculture, especially in South East Asia. These commensal rodents are also vectors of zoonotic deseases which can cause human infection. One of the way how to reduce their populations is to study the transmission of food preferences. Well known phenomenon of genus Rattus is the social learning and sharing the experience about food to other individuals. Not only due to this fact is this kind one of the most successful in the animal kingdom.
The role of nematodes in transmission of parasitic protozoans to a new host

A question of transmission to new hosts is fundamental for all parasitic organisms. Some parasites are adjusted to transmit themselves to new hosts by direct way thanks to the resistant life stage, some others use one or more intermediate hosts. An extreme case is transfer by parasitization of another parasite from the same host. Use of another parasite as a transport vehicle helps to realize transmission and this phenomenon can be termed. One example is the protozoan Histomonas meleagridis. This protozoan lives in the intestine of galliform birds where it can attack the roundworm, Heterakis gallinarum, another parasite of the bird intestine. This protozoan, which does not produce any resistant cyst stage in its life cycle and migrates into the roundworm eggs. After release of the eggs to the external environment, the egg provides a protection against external factors and ensures transfer of the protozoan to the new host. Some data suggests that a similar mode of transmission to new hosts can also be used by some others protozoans. One of them is a protozoan from human intestine, Dientamoeba fragilis. Enterobius vermicularis, a pinworm which parasitizes the same host, could serve as a vector of this protozoan. Hosts and transmission of the crayfish plague pathogen Aphanomyces astaci

The crayfish plague pathogen, the oomycete Aphanomyces astaci, has been decimating populations of European crayfish species for more than 150 years, and is therefore considered one of the 100 worst world's invasive species. A. astaci is highly specialised for a parasitic life, but it can be isolated from moribund crayfish and grown on synthetic media, as it is the case also for several other oomycetes (chapter 7). The life of A. astaci includes three basic forms: mycelium in host's tissues, and the infective units occurring in water, zoospores and cysts. All North American crayfish species tested so far have shown some resistance to A. astaci, i.e., they could carry the infection for long, serving as vectors of the pathogen. Massive sporulation from infected North American crayfish starts when the host is moulting, stressed, or dying (chapter 4). However, I could show in my experiments that some sporulation occurs even from apparently healthy and non-moulting American crayfish hosting A. astaci, so infected North American crayfish must be considered a permanent source of the infection (chapter 4). Cat parasites

The content of this bachelor thesis describes a different variety of cat parasites. This study discovers that the most infected group of the outdoor cats due to the fact that these animals are not provided with the same care as the household pets. Those cats are usually not vaccinated, not rid of worms, no one takes care of their fur and so they tend to become a host for the parasites. There are several kinds of parasites which attack cats. Among those belong the skin parasites like a cat flea (Ctenocephalides felis) or follicle (Demodex). The most common endoparasite that lives in the internal organs or tissues of cats is coccidia (Toxoplasma gondii). The secondary host of this parasite can be any warm-blooded vertebrates including a human host. The common host is a mouse which usually loses its shyness after infestation. This enables the parasite to move to the primary host which is a cat. Other parasites of cats are coccidia (Cystoisospora felis), megrims (Trematoda), nematodes (Nematoda) and dog tapeworm (Dipylidium caninum). The interesting thing is that a cat flea can be a carrier of a dog tapeworm. The most common way of identification of a parasite is a coprological examination (examining the feces). This examination is utilized due to its fast results, however they are not 100 percent correct all the time. There have to be a multiple sample taken during a several days period, however still the parasite doesn´t have to be detected. The more accurate identification is the PCR method which is not only exact, but a costly way. In general, the best prevention begins with good sanitation procedures. This includes daily removal of feces from inside and outside of household as well. The important action is to get rid of worms on regular basis and to use a different method, since the parasite can become immune to a specific method. Other applicable precaution is to ensure the vaccination of a kitten which is repeated every year of cat´s life.
Analysis of wireless transmissions in I

This dissertation deals with Intrusion and Hold-up Alarm System wireless communication (I&HAS). The main objective is to determine security risks of wireless communication between detectors and PBX, eventually to recommend how to avoid these risks. The research was conducted on different detector types. The first theoretical part of dissertation describes variety detector types, wireless communication types and theoretical security risks of these communications. The practical part of dissertation describes the above mentioned security risks investigated in practice as well as the measurement of communication between detectors and PBX. The recommendations how to avoid these risk are placed at the end of dissertation.
Laplace transformation in automation

This thesis deals with the application of Laplace transform in the control theory. Particularly, the analysis of the optimal control setting for a DC motor is realized by Ziegler-Nichols method. The problem analysis is provided by a Matlab script.
Problems of healthcare-associated infection in selected nursing activities

The diploma thesis deals with problems of healthcare-associated infection in selected nursing activities. The thesis is a theoretical one; it has been processed by means of review and synthesis. In this thesis, four objectives were set, namely to create a comprehensive overview of the problems of healthcare-associated infection in selected nursing activities. Other objectives were to map and analyze clinically relevant sites of transmission and possibilities of prevention of healthcare-associated infection in selected nursing activities and to propose recommendations for the prevention of these infections. The thesis is divided into several chapters that deal with the characteristics of healthcare-associated infection, focusing on the causative agents, formation, spreading and prevention. It also deals with particular nursing activities. The first chosen activity was the care of medical devices intended for repeated use, with a particular focus on the implementation of their disinfection. Secondly, hand sanitation as a basic factor affecting the transmission of healthcare-associated infection activity was selected. This chapter deals primarily with the hygienic hand disinfection, its indications, methods and implementation of disinfection products. It also deals with strategies for improving hand hygiene and glove use in providing nursing care. As the third nursing activity, aseptic techniques, which are an essential part in providing nursing care, were chosen. The thesis describes three specific clinical nursing procedures: aseptic collection of venous blood from a peripheral vein, preparation and administration of a drug into an existing peripheral venous catheter, and uncomplicated (aseptic) wounds dressing. Processing of the thesis was based on a range of relevant sources from the Czech Republic but also from abroad. It also contains various recommendations of national and international institutions. The thesis can serve as a basis for more effective prevention of healthcare-associated infection in certain areas.
