Liška, Eugen ; Wiendl, Jan (referee) ; Vojvodík, Josef (advisor)
This text concerns on virtually uknown literary work of Eugen Liška - the Czech catholic writer of second half of the 20th century. First chapter introduces unpublished text of Liška's debut, short stories book with the title "Čas bez lásky" ("Time Without Love"), which was not published because of the beginning of communist dictatorship in 1948. We seek and find connections of Liška's short stories to European existencialism and present term "Christian existencialism" with help of the philosophy of Gabriel Marcel, comparison with work of Albert Camus and reconstruction of the Liška's lecture of Orthodoxy by G. K. Chesterton. Second rather descriptive chapter presents Liška's life work - novel trilogy. Only first novel could be published in 1970. This trilogy above all restores Christian paradigm of history of human kind as history of salvation. Third and last chapter shows similarities of themes of Liška's and Heinrich Böll's books (mainly of the first ones). We analyze the ways how the Sacredness emerges in the texts of both authors.

Turková, Táňa ; Adam, Robert (referee) ; Kučera, Karel (advisor)
This thesis gives a basic language characteristic of the ear1y printed book Life ol the Blessed Agnes... from 1666 from the orthographical, phonetic, morphological, syntactic and lexical perspective. Transcription of the text of this record is also part of the thesis. The examined text is a translation from Latin which originated at the beginnig of the 15th century and was printed according to an old manuscript in 1666. The printing contains extra explanatory marginalia which were added by the publisher. The legend was printed using the Moravian orthography and contains some mistakes due to trascription of the digraphic orthography which was used in the old manuscript. The quantity of vowels is marked, however the graphic form of the printing gives information more about the quantity of Czech in the 1 i h century rather than of Czech in the 15th century. The graphics of the legend reflects some changes which were happening in the phonetic system at that time but the phonetic Czech of the legend basically agrees with the Czech today. More differences in comparison with present Czech can be found in morphology. Compared to today' s Czech concrete formative differences which originated in Old Czech (system oftenses, participle forms, dec1ination of some nouns and numerals) show themselves within particular...

JELENOVÁ, Lenka
This diploma thesis deals with the role of biblical themes in the collection of poems The Legend of the Centuries by Victor Hugo. First chapter pursues selected aspects of the collection (humanistic values, conception of history, character and time aspects). The aim of the second chapter is to put the collection into the literary context of the concerned period (romantism, symbolism) and into the context of the author's philosophical and religious ideas. This part considers the relation among the collection, the myth and the psychoanalysis. Focus of the thesis lies in the third part that analyzes selected poems of the collection. These are classified according to the role of biblical aspects. The first type of Hugo's application of the biblical elements is represented by an opening poem of the collection "La Vision d'ou est sorti ce livre", which refers to the biblical stories, characters and themes via different poetic techniques. The second group of poems represents a direct updating of the biblical stories. The last type unifies the author's convictions with the biblical elements and recreates the so-called biblical poems. The aim of the thesis is to research this new type of myths that Victor Hugo creates throughout the biblical themes.

This thesis is focused on the relationship between the mythological tale of Deirdre and John Millington Synge's play Deirdre of the Sorrows. It concentrates primarily on features, such as characters, themes and motives, which distinguish Synge's Deirdre from the previous versions of the tale. The first part lists all the versions that are echoed in Synge's play, which include the 12th century version from the Book of Leinster, the medieval version from the Glenmasan Manuscript and the versions by Synge's fellow writers and dramatists from the Abbey Theatre. It briefly outlines similarities and contradictions between the earlier versions and Synge's approach. The second chapter deals with the role of fate, its representation in the different texts, and how it affects the central themes and motives in the tale. The last part of the thesis analyzes female protagonist and questions her role as a heroine. The aim of this work is primarily to show that portraying realism was essential to Synge, even when dealing with a legend that is comprised of the exact opposite. The most important passages of the thesis are those which uncover the conflicting representations of characters and motives, because they indicate that Synge's fusion of the heroic and peasant world was not successful. Even though he managed to...

Political and economical context of piracy in the American shores
Frýda, Jiří ; Baďura, Bohumil (referee) ; Opatrný, Josef (advisor)
The story of piracy in Spanish America begins with Treaty of Tordesillas. But its origins laid in the comercial and political rivalry between Spain and European states. However first challengers of Spain's monopoly weren't pirates but more interlopers. Spanish's bullion from Peru and other products from West Indies was according to law exchangeable only for Spanish merchandise and only by Spanish subjects. This state was in the second half of the sixteenth century attacked by attempts of England - one of the rising modern national states. From this point of view the Pirate zone in New world was a important stage of international warfare among European realms-states. Apart off this international turmoil stood, but not too far, rejection of Catholicism by Henry VIII. and later again by Elizabeth I. This issue was in the air for more than fifty years. Not even assaults of Spanish Armada could shut down voices of protestants in England in such twilight. The religious struggle should be considered like one of many episodes which defined the emerging nation states. Centuries of legendizing created myths about Francis Drake and John Hawkins. But for the first time in the Carribean they were more icons of the early modern spirit of enterprise than pirates. Hawkin's trade passion for 'negros' ironically stands in...
