Šustíková, Věra ; Gabrielová, Jarmila (advisor) ; Kopecký, Jiří (referee) ; Jakubcová, Alena (referee)
This work aims to explore a hitherto neglected set of issues concerning Czech concert melodrama which during its lengthy evolution, closely bound up with Czech literature and the development of a Czech recitation style, came to acquire characteristics of its own which distinguish it from German melodrama, with which it nevertheless shares common roots. The work gives a comprehensive account of source materials and commentaries on Czech concert melodrama and also of recent conclusions about the essential nature of melodrama as an artistic category (specifically a syncretic, equal fusion of music and the spoken word as well as the satisfactory artistic adaptation of musical forms to the genre of concert melodrama). The work is primarily concerned with the six concert melodramas by Zdeněk Fibich, which serve as a starting point for the subsequent evolution of Czech concert melodrama. Using multi-faceted analysis it defines their specific qualities and details within the context of the contemporary European and native Czech development of this particular genre. Klíčová slova: melodram - český koncertní melodram - Zdeněk Fibich. Key words: melodrama - Czech concert melodrama - Zdeněk Fibich.

Using Old Testament Themes and Their Original Interpretation in the Works of John Steinbeck
Straková, Kateřina ; Čapek, Filip (advisor) ; Sláma, Petr (referee)
Using Old Testament Themes and their Original Interpretation in the works of John Steinbeck 5 The issue of my thesis is the reflection of biblical themes and narratives in secular literature. In the concrete, I am focusing on the specific interpretation of Old Testament themes in the works of an American author of the 1st half of the 20 th Century, John Steinbeck. From his novels, I have chosen three for the analysis - To a God Unknown, The Grapes of Wrath and East of Eden. I approached the novels with criticism, yet I did not strive to give the stories a meaning different from the intention of the author. I am focusing especially on biblical symbolism used in the novels and on parallelisms between biblical and Steinbeck's narratives. Both the symbolism and the parallelisms are traced in each novel separately, yet I try to point to the motives which are used in all of the novels chosen, e.g. settling the "promissed land". Steinbeck starts with simple symbols and then he passes to more complicated and elaborated ones. The symbolism of first names is a good example for this. Steinbeck starts with simple symbolism in the novel To a God Unknown, a symbolism I called direct symbolism where a character bears the same name as his/her biblical pattern. In The Grapes of Wrath, Steinbeck elaborates what I...

Catholic song-propaganda in the Czech lands
Kvapil, Jan ; Stromšík, Jiří (advisor) ; Petrbok, Václav (referee) ; Kurzke, Hermann (referee)
The Dissertation considers the Catholic song propaganda of the early modern times. Its research is based on Bohemian literate and musical sources. The basic methods of the song-propaganda were actually invented by Protestants. The Catholic reformers were able to react to its influence through their own song-propaganda (for instance Leisentrit and Jesuits) and modernized and developed their own new methods with just a minute delay. The song-propaganda was an outstanding device for indoctrinating common people anyway because of their analphabetism. The main attention was focused on persuasive methods used in the songpropaganda by Catholic missionaries. These methods can be classified as follows: The repetitive method was the simplest one based on a simple reproduction of fundamental Christian texts (Lord's Prayer, Credo, Ave), religious dogmas (purgatory, confession, communion) and ideological doctrines (singularity of the Catholic Church) in a musical form. It was mainly applied in the catechesis. The songs inspired by this method were mainly addressed to children and youth. The exemplary method gives either positive or negative example people should or should not follow. These songs narrated mostly a life of a exemplary saint. They were very popular among children and therefore applied in catechesis. A more...

Zdeňková, Petra ; Pelán, Jiří (advisor) ; Flemrová, Alice (referee)
Michele Prisco. Michele Prisco's narrative writings in the context of the Italian literature of the second half of the twentieth century Our thesis was dedicated to the the Italian writer Michele Prisco (1920 - 2003). On the basis of the detailed analysis of some of author's novels and stories we tried to place his narrative literature into the context of Italian literature of the second half of the twentieth century. Michele Prisco, a writer, journalist, literary and film critic entered literature with a story collection. La provincia addormentata (Sleepy province) in 1949. During exactly fifty-year long writer's career he published eleven novels and a number of narrative collections. He was introduced to the Czech scene by translations of his novels Gli eredi del vento (1950, Czech translation - Dědicové větru, Heirs of the Wind, J. Hajný 1983) and Una spirale di nebbia (1966, Czech translation - Cár mlhy, A Spiral of Mist, J. Hajný 1984). Prisco's narrative literature gives a compact impression even though it came through a certain development in the thematic and above all compositional plan. The background of nearly all Prisco's stories and novels is his native land in the area of Vesuvius or Naples. The author is not concerned only with the description of the region and its inhabitants but mainly with...
