Political Reform in Russia under the Rule of Vladimir Putin: Law on Political Parties and its Influence on Political Opposition
Hosenseidlová, Petra ; Šír, Jan (advisor) ; Kubát, Michal (referee)
The thesis Political Reform in Russia under the Rule of Vladimir Putin:Law on Political Parties and its Influence on Political Opposition deals with the impact of the aforesaid law on Russia's opposition parties during Putin's presidency, i. e. in the period between enacting this law in 2001 and 2008. It focuses on then three main opposition parties, namely Communist Party of the Russian Federation, Union of Right Forces and Yabloko. It analyzes the impact of the aforesaid law on the opposition parties in the following three areas of activity: registration; financing; and participation in the political process as exemplified through the elections for the State Duma in 2003. The analysis allows us to conclude that the impact of the aforesaid law was lower than conventionally believed. That said, however, does not mean that the ruling regime would not seek to severely curtail the parties standing in opposition to President Putin. It did so using predominantly other methods, such as dirty election campaigns, targeted crackdown on the opposition's key sponsor, and administrative interference with the election process.

This work aims at examining the origins of the civil rights coaiition between African Americans and American Jews, its achievements and its fall following the rise of radicalism among African Americans and other historical developments in the late 1960s. It is clear that the abolition of slavery alone did not bring about social, economic and political integration of African Americans. Black codes and unwritten discriminatory customs prevented them from securing their rightful and equal place among white Americans. In order to fight racism and discrimination and support integration more effectively, African Americans started to organize in a number of organizations including the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and the Universal Negro Improvement Association (UNIA). However, because they lacked leadership, funding as well as organizational skills, they needed an ally and American Jews proved to be a dexterous one. There were a number of things that African Americans and Jews shared at that time: no ne of the two ethnic groups had a homeland in the sense that for example Italian Americans did before World War II. African Americans recognized and understood the fact that Jews had been living in poor conditions and under a constant threat to their lives in Europe. Furthermore,...

This thesis deals with poetics and politics of the annual worship of goddess Durga in Calcutta, India, and though it is not an ethnography as a genre, it is largely based on fieldwork. The second chapter deals with the concept of ritual. It summarises current state of discussion in the field and finally outlines Alfred Gell' s concepts of secondary agency, technology of enchantment, distributed personhood and extended mind in order to examine the external and internal strategies of animation of images of deities. The third chapter is a short introduction into the goddess worship tradition in India with focus on mythological narratives of Devi -Ma ha tmya and portrayal of Durga pu ja in Bengali rendition of Ra ma ya a. The fourth chapter reverts to my first fieldwork on Durga pu ja and interprets the intersection of Durga pu ja and the " war on terror" with Marc Agué' s concept of extended ritual technique. The fifth chapter is an elaborate survey of plant symbolism in Durga pu ja with plenty of comparative material. Its aim is to explore the ritual symbols within the Durga pu ja complex at the...
