New roles of libraries in Teaching, Learning and Research
Geleijnse, Hans
The Open Access movement started as an answer to the ‘journals crisis’ and has developed into worldwide initiatives to speed up and renew the process of scholarly communication and to improve the access to research publications and data. Open Access is currently being promoted by researchers and librarians, but also by university boards, national governments, funding bodies and the European Commission. The development of University mandates, Open Access Journals, institutional and subject repositories will be discussed. The focus will be on the developments in Europe and on the involvement and role of research libraries. Experiences with repositories learn that it is important that the deposit of publications is integrated in the workflow of the researcher and that repositories are seamlessly linked with the research information system. It is a great challenge to renovate the process of scholarly communication in such a way that open access can be provided to scholarly information, with maintaining the principles of quality control, certification and peer review. Research communities can play a key role in the development of new models and the creation of sustainable solutions, but leadership of university managers is essential to pave the way and to create the conditions for change.

Charles University in Prague, Faculty of Pharmacy in Hradec Králové Department of Biophysics and Physical Chemistry Candidate Mgr. Veronika Biricová Supervisor Doc. Ing. Alice Lázníčková, CSs. Title of Doctoral Thesis Study of radiolabeling of PAMAM dendrimers of 1st and 4th generation with diagnostic and therapeutic radionuclides. Treatment and diagnosis of diseases using radioactive isotopes is important field on which pharmaceutical research is focused. In order to obtain drug which would specifically bind to receptors released by cells of affected organs and tissues and concurrently provide them a high dosage of radiation, one part of research projects is focused on finding carriers and also new metal chelators suitable for binding in a high number on biologically active molecule. This dissertation thesis is focused on a research of a new bifunctional chelator of trivalent metal ions bound in a high number on a branched dendrimer. Different parameters evaluating suitability of chelator for bond creation with radioactive istotopes were reviewed. From the biggest part is this thesis focused on labeling of dendrimer macromolecules with ligands bound on their surface with three different radioactive isotopes. Success of the labeling under different conditions based on value of radiochemical purity...

Electronic means for creation, release and distribution of music
Šebek, Michael ; Pavlíček, Antonín (advisor) ; Oškrdal, Václav (referee)
Electronic means for creation, release and distribution of music are covered by the Bachelor thesis, particularly from a starting author's point of view. Major modes to release electronic music are reviewed with a particular focus on internet operating online music distributors that link the authors with music e-shops. Dozens of online distributors are reviewed for the conditions and services they offer to starting authors. Based on the data acquired by an original research, the online distributors are evaluated and compared according to the total benefit the author can achieve. The marketing of both singles and albums is considered. A new concept of averaged album is introduced to cope with diversity of distributors. Several methods are proposed and used to evaluate and compare the author's profit. Calculations are performed using a fixed number as well as an expected number of units sold. An electronic music debutant may apply the recommendations derived in the thesis, consult the data tables and the charts included in the text or even run the presented methods on his or her own. Intellectual property rights are also discussed and several organizations protecting the rights of music authors are reviewed and evaluated from a starting author's point of view.

Assessment of Policy Changes of the Impacts of Urbanization, Economic Growth and Decentralization of Water Services with Regard to Water Quality in Mexico
Lara Cervantes, René Fernando ; Šauer, Petr (advisor) ; Dvořák, Antonín (referee) ; Hájek, Miroslav (referee)
The thesis studies the case of water quality in Mexico as a crucial factor to prevent water scarcity. This is an important issue for Mexico since more than half of its territory is arid or semi-arid; moreover, the most productive regions are located in areas with significant water resources stress. In this regard, the current situation of water scarcity is studied from the changes in water management derived from the evolution of institutions in the country. The institutional changes were analyzed mostly in the transition from a centralized water supply and sanitation services with strong state intervention to the decentralization of such services that were transferred to municipalities. Decentralization was addressed by analyzing the performance of water supply and sanitation services in urban areas that are expected to continue growing in the near future. The literature shows that the decentralization process has been partial and has not improved as expected the performance of water supply and sanitation services, moreover, due to political reasons, limited human and financial resources it introduced more challenges to the accomplishment of sustainable water management. More importantly, the federal government is still the main agent for the development of the water sector in Mexico. The next part of the analysis consist of a quantitative and qualitative evaluation regarding water quality for the three most productive Hydrological-Administrative Regions (HARs) of Mexico in the period of 2003-2013. The HARs chosen are the HAR VI Río Bravo, HAR VIII Lerma Santiago Pacific and HAR XIII Waters of the Valley of Mexico which are very similar in terms GDP share and water stress degree. Through OLS regression models for each HAR the impacts of demographic, economic, water supply and sanitation services aspects were tested to known their effects on water quality. In order to improve the discussion of the results, additional to the comparison with the results of the literature review, three experts were asked to answer a questionnaire about the regressions outcome. The discussion showed different impacts of the independent variables in the dependent variable of each HAR, sometimes leading to unexpected results. The main conclusions of the thesis relate to the improvement of decentralization of water and sanitation services, to the need to improve data for future analyses and pay more attention to water quality issues. In this regard, decentralization requires to consider contextual differences in order to seize its advantages to improve the performances of water supply and sanitation services, moreover, at the operative level water management decisions must be taken without political interests involved. The statistical analyses stressed the need to develop more reliable data about water management issues to improve the understanding of factors that could potentially affect water quality. In this regard, the creation of useful statistical indicators to assess the evolution towards sustainability in water management. The considerations for future research must consider more seriously water quality issues. This topic has been often ignored, however, it is crucial for water scarcity abatement.

The 2010 increase of tuition fees at British universities
Štěpánová, Marie ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee)
The bachelor thesis is a case study based on an analysis of the problems of higher education in Great Britain. In the first part, it deals with the genesis of the decision of British government to increase tuition fees of public universities. This took place in 2010 in the United Kingdom (apart from free Scottish schools). The second part analyzes arguments for and against the tuition fee increase. The period studied is from May to December 2010, meaning, between the general election which concluded in the creation of a surprising coalition of Liberal Democrats and Conservatives, and the tuition fees vote in the parliament. The differing views on university funding and on educational budget cuts between the two governmental parties caused disagreements in the coalition as well as within the parties. Liberal Democrats had to solve the dilemma whether to support the decision of promoting fee increase and following the recommendations of Browne's Review of Higher Education Funding and Student Finance, or to fulfill their pre-election promises, which were basically founded on the rejection of tuition fees. The proposal had some positive reactions from universities (Russell Group, UUK), raising arguments like the graduates' benefits from a degree, increase in competitiveness of British higher education...
