The Employ of the Gothic Novel in Czech Prose of the First Half of the 20th Century: analogies and variations of the genre.

The aim of this bachelor thesis is to define the genre of the English gothic novel, a historically-conditioned phenomenon, which is revived whenever a specific cultural and social situation occurs. The presence of the genre in the Czech prose of the first half of the twentieth century is traced and discovered in the works of Vítězslav Nezval and Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic. Along with the inspiration drawn from the gothic novel goes the literary background particular for each author - surrealism (Nezval) and decadence (Karásek). Despite the gothic novel balancing on the edge of the trivial, its position in the literary tradition has been stable for several hundreds of years. It has affected many other genres which have carried on its tradition until today.

This work focuses on women characters in the poetry of czech poet Viktor Dyk, examines their basic features and symbolism and offers basic summary about their occurrences and relevance in author's poetry and in czech poetry at the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century. It's based chosen critical reactions on poetry of Viktor Dyk and particular examples from author's poems. It also offers basic material and ideologic starting point for further research of author's poetry and characters. The Eternal Boyhood of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic

The thesis attempts to describe the life and work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic through an analysis of his lifestyle, i.e. the way in which he organized, embellished and individualized his life. Karásek sought to shape his existence as an artwork, in accordance with the inspirational concepts of the contemporary and antecedent thinkers and artists (e.g. Oscar Wilde, Walter Pater and Maurice Maeterlinck). He accented its integrity and orientation towards beauty. In accord with his aesthetic vision (and his literary work) Karásek conditioned beauty with sadness and pain and attempted to emphasize melancholic beauty, unity in disunion. For that purpose he would accentuate particularly the disintegrative, critical elements, evoking the impression of unsuccessful, self-destructive endeavor to reach life's high ideal. This corresponded with his tragic concept of the artist immolating himself for his Art. I approach Karásek's lifestyle through the use of the terms youth and (eternal) boyhood, which Karásek himself employed as symbols of mournfully beautiful existence in his literary work. Concept of Childhood in Fyodor Sologub's prose

ТITLE The Concept of Childhood in Fyodor Sologub's prose ABSTRACT: This Master thesis deals with the topic of childhood in prose works of the Russian writer, novelist and teacher Fyodor Sologub. The research presents his biography, traces the development of his personality, as well as his perception of the world and interests. It focuses on the events, which determined the extent and significance of the chosen topic for Sologub. There are also revealed lesser known facts of his childhood that influenced his choice of the topics and its embodiment in his literary works. The writer's biography is complemented by the views of critics and contemporaries who studied his works and shaped public opinion. The main topics of the analysis are: dualistic vision of the world, children's death, faith in God, children's patriotism. The ideal world of children is presented in the novel The Created Legend. The thesis also reveals the popularity of the topic of childhood in other 19th and 20th century writers' oeuvre in comparative analysis with Sologub's work. It also depicts the importance of two literary movements - symbolism and decadence, their representative Sologub was. The questions raised by Sologub remain relevant to the present day. Synesthesia in the work of Jiří Karásek ze Lvovic in the fin de siecle

This thesis should solve the mystery of the synesthesia (especially on field of the theory of literature). The explanation of selected art schools of the second half of nineteenth century should anchor this phenomenon in the history of literature. The thesis analysis the concrete cases selected from the primary texts (collection of poems Zazděná okna, prose Román o Manfredu Macmillenovi and drama Sen o říši krásy). This analysis is based on the various types od synesthesia. The analysis prooved that this phenomenon does not only exist in the world literature, but it also exists in the Czech literature of that age. The comparison of the results extracted by Sean A. Day, Ph.D. was very interesting. This thesis examines also the colours and seing of the colours in the dreams. The work of Svetozar Nevole showed up useful. Although the work is almost 50 years younger than the primary literature, there were no big problems with adaptation of this theory for the primary texts.

Dualistic vision of the world in prosaic works by members of Scapigliatura movement

Abstrac After the long period of Risorgimento and several attempts of unification of Italy, the expectations of the Italian nation finally materialized when the Italian state was solemnly declared on 4th March 1861. However the territories of Veneto and Rome were annexed only several years later, even though not in such a heroic way as the Italians hoped for. Despite the great effort of Garibaldi the final unification took place only after the French loss in Prussian-French war of 1870, which was difficult to bear for the pride of Italians. Another disappointment was the organization and functioning of the new state, which didn"t work smoothly. In some cities the artistic circles started to build groups of dissatisfied intellectuals, one of these groups was the "milanese scapigliatura ", which reached it"s heyday between 1860- 1880. Their poetics, or the way of their artistic expression, was closely related to their humor. They lead a dubious way of life, trying to escape the reality through the drugs and alcohol. They were strongly influenced by the romanticism and the positivists. They aimed to show the truth in their works. Jan Opolský and his prosaic work in temporary literary context

The aim of this thesis is to define Jan Opolský′s prosaic works with emphasis put on his evident inspiration through fine arts. The work of Jan Opolský does not exceed limits of a short stories. It almost falls short of an action. The predominant feature would be reflexion and visual description. That is especially the case with voluminious parts devoted to the bright light and the color nuances - with their changing expresions and diverse shades reflected on the presented object of art. The whole momentum of his prosaic work tends to be included in exactly these parts of his ouvre. In his writing, Opolský uses his skills he earned as a craftsman and as an expert in various artistic fields. Because of his obsession with the world of art, he can be considered a good example of a decadent artist. A number of his texts, especially given these features it is focusing on, have symbolic legitimacy anyway.

Dramatic Works During the Period of Czech Decadence.

The main goal of this thesis is to analyze the decadent dramatic masterpiece. At first at my work, I was concentrated on description of decadence and other directions of modernism, which of the related, such as Impressionism and Symbolism. Then I donated the description of decadent direction in Bohemia, but also in other countries, especially in France and England. Of course I even didn't forget even the most important decadent writers in these countries. Next, I described the characteristics of the decadent drama, mentioned the important authors and their works, and I finally dismantled dramatic literary works of Jiří Karásek from Lvovice, Cesare Borgia and Apollonius z Tyany. I focused mainly on the decadent, secession and the symbolist characters in these works. I have included in this analysis, descriptions of scenery and decadent tuning, descriptions of characters and I also dismantled each act in which I was looking for motives of decadence.
