Essays on Exporting Behavior of Firms and on Inflation Persistence

The first essay reacts to recent literature on learning-by exporting and explores whether exporting firms are more productive because initially more productive firms self-select themselves into exporting or because exporting firms are becoming more productive. To provide convincing estimates, one must be able to disentangle learning-by-exporting from changes in company management that induce the company to both start exporting and introduce productivity increasing measures. Therefore, I compare estimates based on matching on propensity score, which do not control for potential management changes, to estimates based on an instrumental variables strategy. Specifically, I focus on firms that start exporting due to changes in the industry-specific ratio of producer prices on domestic and foreign markets. The results suggest...

Relative pollen productivity estimates of main tree taxa of Central Europe - assumptions for data collection.
Šourková, Pavlína ; Abraham, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Kuneš, Petr (referee)
Quantitative reconstruction of vegetation from fossil pollen data makes is possible to learn about historical development of the flora of a particular area and, thus, to a certain degree about the climate changes as well. Parameters (the so-called pollen productivities) needed in order to convert the pollen data into the vegetation data can be acquired by calibration from modern samples. The constancy of these parameters in time is assumed on the basis of the principle of uniformitarianism. Due to climatic conditions, however, pollen productivities are not constant in space and must be estimated for each region separately. The pollen and vegetation percentage data can be used to carry out relative pollen productivity estimates (PPE). The relative pollen productivities are related to a reference taxon, which has a value of 1 and vegetation abundance expressed by content units. Relative pollen productivities are estimated by means of the so-called ERV models. Before entering the ERV models, the vegetation data must be weighed by the distance in order to take into account the fact that the more remote plants contribute to the sample with a smaller quantity of pollen than the nearer ones. It is the Prentice-Sugita model of pollen dispersion ant disposition that is currently the most appropriate...

Learning and teaching grammar at high schools. German as a second language
Coufalová, Hana ; Berglová, Eva (referee) ; Dovalil, Vít (advisor)
This diploma thesis aims to find out about the situation in teaching German grammar at Czech upper-secondary schools. It examines selected aspects of the teaching by means of questionnaires for German teachers and their students. Further it analyses the most frequently used textbook of German "Sprechen Sie Deutsch?", which is evaluated by the author as a negative example among the textbooks. As its counterpart she analyses the textbook "Schritte International" which is, on the contrary, an example of a good textbook. On the basis of the analysis she proposes a tentative list of principles, according to which the teacher should choose an appropriate textbook. The author tries to determine basic theoretical requirements for teaching German grammar and she compares them with reality, which does not seem to correspond to this demands. She concludes by providing suggestions for improving the current situation.

The causes of poor learning results in the subject 6MI211 - Data Analysis
Ryšavá, Iveta ; Komárková, Lenka (advisor) ; Voráček, Jan (referee)
The aim of this bachelor thesis is to statistically process data related to the failure of full time students in the subject Data Analysis and to appropriately interpret the acquired results. Resources to our work are the academic results based on Data Analysis and Math for economists from the winter semester of the academic year 2006/2007 and 2007/2008 and, in particular, a questionnaire formulated by ourselves. The nature of the data collected leads to the analysis of qualitative variables. First single data are described using a table of relative and absolute frequencies for each variable. In addition, we have worked with selected pairs of variables, namely the two-data which are processed in the form of contingency tables and these tables are then further analyzed. There are, inter alia, used tests of independence and homogeneity. For better understanding we have used the tables and the related tests are completed by graphs. From our bachelor thesis, we expect that we find the views of students on this subject and find out, why this subject causes so many problems for most of them.
