Venn diagrams - Teaching Mathematics using the CLIL method for upper secondary pupils
Vojířová, Barbora ; Novotná, Jarmila (advisor) ; Moraová, Hana (referee)
This thesis focuses on the teaching of mathematics using the CLIL method. The topic is Venn diagrams and learning how to solve problems using these diagrams. The language chosen for the CLIL method is English. First, the CLIL method is described, and later I introduce sets and Venn diagrams. The aim of the thesis is to prepare and implement two lessons using the CLIL method in English, and two lessons in Czech, followed by preparing a test in both languages for a third lesson. The thesis was realized by conducting a teaching experiment, which took place in two classes of multi- year grammar school (in the Quintas - the first year of secondary school). I have compiled and tested four worksheets - two with Czech tasks, two with English tasks, a presentation for the lesson using the CLIL method, and tests for both language versions. Both the tasks and solutions are part of the thesis. Before the preparation of the thesis, the following two research questions were identified: 1. What needs to be taken into consideration when preparing for the Venn diagrams lesson using the CLIL method, and what needs to be added to this lesson compared to the Czech lesson? 2. At what success rate will pupils learn using the CLIL method in English and pupils using Czech, with regard to equation building and answers to...
Comparing methods of mathematics teaching with a focus on geometry
Stříbrná, Eliška ; Tůmová, Veronika (advisor) ; Kloboučková, Jaroslava (referee)
The goal of this diploma thesis is to observe, characterize ale reflect two well-known methods of teaching mathematics - so-called classical method and method according to professor Hejný, on the example of two second grade class teachers of elementary school with a focus on geometry. In the theoretical part I list several research works concerning class room observation. I use these to set up methodology of my own research. Moreover, the methods are characterized according to the literature and the analysis of the textbooks. Also the outputs of the Framework Education Programme (in Czech "Rámcový vzdělávací program") are presented in this theoretical part. I use these outputs to evaluate whether the method leads students to what they should know. The practical part consists of observing lessons of two teachers, my own teaching experience in the given classes and final questionnaire for students. Data collected from these observations are analysed with the help of qualitative and quantitative methods. The representative of the so-called classical method put emphasis on repetition and system. He usually asks students questions that require a shorter response. Students do not enjoy the school and geometry that much, but the knowledge results are quite good. The representative of the method according...

Financial literacy and its inclusion in the curriculum of practical primary schools
Löffelmannová, Anna ; Kloboučková, Jaroslava (advisor) ; Tůmová, Veronika (referee)
The theoretical part of the diploma work defines intellectual disabilities, as well as the possibilities of counselling and educating of pupils with mental disabilities. Further, the thesis discusses education and re-education of pupils with diagnosed mental retardation. It outlines the inclusion of financial literacy into the curricular documents intended for pupils with a mental disability across educational areas with emphasis on mathematics. The thesis introduces materials and their parameters suitable for the inclusion of financial literacy at practical primary schools. The practical part covers experimental education of individual thematic topics of financial literacy at practical primary schools. The carried out initial diagnostics of pupils at a selected practical primary school focused on percentages, simple interest and a family budget. This diagnostics had a general character, as was also verified. Furthermore, the thesis presents a detailed record from own executed teaching with regard to four monitored pupils, including their casuistry. After the completion of the teaching, its success was assessed. The work can be used not only by teachers at practical primary schools but also at ordinary primary schools, because it contains a series of graded tasks that lead to the development of...

Title: Implementation of Challenging Tasks in Mathematics Education Author: PhDr. Lucie Růžičková Department: Department of Mathematics and Mathematics Education Supervisor: RNDr. Alena Kopáčková, Ph.D. ABSTRACT The thesis deals with practical implementation of challenging tasks in mathematics education. The methodology for examining "the fidelity of implementation of mathematical tasks" is being designed to describe whether the task is used according to the original intention of the teacher or according to the intention of its author. This methodology is employed in the analysis of four experiments to examine mathematical tasks and task environments. Then, based on the experience with the analysis, the methodology is adapted to the needs of both the teaching practice and educational research. The main result of the thesis is the creation of the methodology for examining the fidelity of implementation of mathematical tasks which is based on contrasting the descriptions of four general elements of the mathematical task at different phases of its implementation. KEY WORDS: mathematics education, mathematical task, challenging task, implementation of tasks
