Nováková, Denisa ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Rovná, Lenka (referee)
On August 21 2013 a massive chemical attack took place in Syria. On the basis of the attack the British Prime Minister convened parliament and asked the House of Commons for the approval of a military intervention in Syria. The government motion was however disapproved by 285:272 votes and therefore the possible military intervention and the further voting on this issue was blocked. Right after the vote a series of possible causes and consequences occurred. This bachelor thesis "Interpretations of a negative result of the British parliament vote on military intervention in Syria" tries to systematically analyze possible causes and identify the main factors, which contributed to the negative result. Then it tries to justify why Britain as a country with long history of humanitarian intervention refused to intervene in a country where one of the greatest humanitarian crisis of the 21st century takes place. Moreover when a military intervention in Libya took place under the current government. At the same time the bachelor thesis puts an emphasis on the character of the Syrian conflict, British political discourse in the context of a military intervention and experience with foreign-political interventions. Then it also analyses the allocation of seats in the British parliament, current state in a...

Euroscepticism and its position in Great Britain
Beránková, Barbora ; Kučerová, Irah (advisor) ; Karlas, Jan (referee)
Euroscepticism is considered as a stream of thoughts whch is typical of the EU distrust or of the European integration and its goals as such. The most common objections to joining the integration proces are loss of national sovereignty, not paying enough attention to national interests or too strict policy unification that does not allow for national particularities. This master thesis will focus on euroscepticism as a concept, il will analyze its ideological roots and the most frequent arguments in favour of this concept. Furthermore, it will analyze various classifications of euroscepticism as well as its potential to be called a new cleavage or even ideology as I suggest that there is no widely-accepted definition. Great Britain - a representative of traditionally very sceptical approach towards European integration project has been chosen as a model case. In this case study firstly, the development of potential eurosceptical thinking within the Conservative Party and the Labour Party will be explored. More importantly, it will concentrate on the (in)consistency of their European policies in time, analysis of their attitudes in the 21st century and finally it will try to derive the future development of their possible eurosceptical opinions from their current manifestos and public speeches. The...

Třešňáková, Martina ; Kovář, Martin (advisor) ; Fabianková, Klára (referee)
The goal of this final thesis is to give a comprehensive analysis of the fiscal policy of the Conservative Party from 1951 to 1957. Under the government of Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden the United Kingdom faced a number of economic and political problems, which in turn influenced its economic development. The British government tried to stop the decreasing trend of the economy in relation to other states through interventionist economic policy, which in the Great Britain is known as policy stop and go. It especially focuses on  the post-war period and the consequences of the government of Winston Churchill and Anthony Eden. Economic and political development of Great Britain during Harold Macmillan's government (1957-1963)
Myšák, Lukáš ; Soukup, Jaromír (advisor) ; Kovář, Martin (referee)
My master's thesis focuses on analysis of political and economic development of Great Britain in 1957 -- 1964 period, when the Conservative Party was in charge, led firstly by H. Macmillan and then A. Home. After Macmillan gained the post of Prime minister, due to the Suez crisis, I present an analysis of British domestic economy, whose good condition led to conservative election victory of 1959. Then I analyze the shift of British government towards decolonization of Africa and also the British decision to join ECC (predeceased with EFTA agreement). Furthermore, there is an analysis of reasons behind H. Macmillan's resignation, which were mainly of medical character. Third part of my work is considering the Home government, his position as the Prime minister and development of British economy during early 1960's. Thesis is concluded by analysis of 1964's election, where the Labour Party achieved slim victory over the Conservative Party, and therefore was able to form a government.

In order to answer what option are the most suitable to the various criterions, the work discusses the ideology of the main election participants, analyzes their attitude to current issues of Great Britain and mentions the election results. By comparing the various options, the bachelor thesis finds out the decision of the Liberal Democrats can be found on the theory of coalitions in case of selection of number of members criterion which is promoted by British bi-partisanship.
