A Study of the Trade Effects of China's Direct Investment in Central and Eastern European Countries
Wang, Yuehan ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Figueira, Filipa (referee) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee)
This paper aims to explore the relationship between China's investment in Central and Eastern European countries (CEECs) and China-CEECs trade. Since the 1950s, the research on the relationship between foreign direct investment (FDI) and foreign trade has become one of the topics of theoretical and empirical analysis. Many scholars have conducted extensive studies on the relationship between FDI and trade from different perspectives and theoretical and empirical perspectives. Under the background of "the Belt and Road", the CEECs, as important trading partners in this strategy, have gradually expanded their trade with China. This paper explores the current situation and characteristics of China's direct investment and trade with the CEECs from the perspective of the relationship between FDI and foreign trade. The development of China's direct investment and trade with the CEECs is explored from the perspectives of total volume, country, and products by qualitative analysis. Meanwhile, the trade gravity model is established to empirically analyze the influence of China's direct investment in the CEECs on China-CEECs trade scale from the three aspects of total trade volume, export, and import. The results show that China's direct investment in the CEECs has a long-term positive effect on the scale of...
Corruption Distance and Foreign Direct Investment: Evidence from European Transition Economies
Yu, Bin ; Paulus, Michal (advisor) ; Bruno, Randolph Luca (referee) ; Semerák, Vilém (referee)
This dissertation builds on Cezar and Escobar's (2015) study of the relationship between institutional distance and foreign direct investment (FDI), but focuses instead on the nexus between corruption distance and FDI. Along the lines of their study, this dissertation uses a two-stage gravity model derived from the framework of heterogeneous firms to empirically estimate the impact of corruption distance on the inward and outward FDI of European transition economies. This dissertation contributes to the literature in several aspects. First, it proposes a new method for measuring corruption distance, considering the importance of firms' previous experience to the development of necessary skills for navigating a foreign business environment. Second, the empirical study distinguished the impact of corruption distance on the extensive and intensive margin by using a rich dataset with three different corruption indices, which thereby differs from most previous studies on this topic. This is also one of the few papers that specifically study this topic in the context of European transition economies. The results show that both conventional and adjusted corruption distance based on the control-of-corruption index only reduces the extensive margin of transition economies' FDI; and that the magnitude of...
Analysis of the Investment Environment of Chinese Commercial Properties in Czech Republic
Wang, Yining ; Vacek, Pavel (advisor) ; Svoboda, Karel (referee) ; Radošević, Slavo (referee)
Many countries would like to use foreign direct investment to increase the growth of GDP and promote stable development. The Czech Republic is one of the countries having the largest FDI within Central and Eastern Europe. Meanwhile, Chinese investments have increased significantly and already became an important feature of the China-Europe relationships during recent years. The closer cooperation between China and Europe could encourage FDI. Within the kinds of FDI, the real estate industries experienced a rapid increase in many developed and emerging regions. Therefore, the aim of this study is aiming to analyse the investment environment of Chinese commercial properties in the Czech Republic. Two basic research designs will be employed for this research. The first design is focusing on collected recent available data to present the investment climate of the Czech Republic. In this part, we also make comparisons of the Czech Republic with serval economies. We found that the relatively low cost of labour, low inflation rate, easier to set-up a business (in terms of both times consuming and cash consuming) make the Czech Republic becomes more attractive. And this is consistent with the empirical analysis. Secondly, the questionnaire method was used for the study and we get back 108 questionnaires....
The effects of FDI on regionalism in states of ASEAN
Kolečková, Denisa
This diploma thesis is aimed to analyze and investigate theoretically and empirically whether FDI affects regionalism in Southeast and East Asia. It applies regression analysis to examine how foreign direct investment influence GDP growth, the most visible aspect of ASEAN´s open regionalism. Panel data analysis was carried out, using time series data over the period from 2005 to 2014 to establish a relationship between chosen variables. The findings indicate that foreign direct investment has influential role in the economic integration and development of the ASEAN countries. The contribution of FDI to growth is significant in East and Southeast Asia.
Sbližování států Sdružení národů jihovýchodní Asie
Kiedroňová, Tereza
The area of ASEAN countries and the subsequent role of regionalisation were being analysed in this thesis whilst employing the HDI, mortality rate up to 5 years, life expectancy at birth, GDP per capita, unemployment rate, and FDI as the crucial indicators. The study aims to examine the ASEAN countries and its aggregation within both the economic and social spheres. A 10-year period (2006-2016) had been inquired so that the development of each indicator may be examined. And therefore, results of beta convergence could be displayed in a correlation diagrams. The convergence trend has mirrored in five indicators. The only indicator, however, to be diverging has been represented by the unemployment rate. The findings of beta convergence suggest that, in comparison with economic indicators, social indicators tend to converge in a more significant manner in the ASEAN countries.
Radar Antenna Diagnostic Module
Pacner, Petr
Faults in the electrical wiring can cause fatal problems in particular application. Therefore various Fault Detection, Isolation and Recovery techniques have been developed, able to detect these faults. Such Defects may occure on a coaxial cable lines in radar systems between transmitter (receiver) and antenna. The aim of this paper is to present simulations of sequence time-domain reflectometry method. The results indicate suitability of this method for transmission lines terminated with radar antenna and capability of reliable soft faults detection (short and open circuit).
Investment Policy of the European Union - protection of foreign direct investment
Štamberk, David ; Šmejkal, Václav (referee)
Investment Policy of the European Union - protection of foreign direct investment Abstract One of the changes brought about by the Lisbon Treaty is the explicit inclusion of foreign direct investment and its protection in the common commercial policy of the European Union. This is one of the areas of exclusive competence of the EU. The European Union has subsequently stated negotiating bilateral agreements governing, inter alia, investment issues. However, it has not been spared from controversy and negative publicity that has been accompanying especially the TTIP and the CETA. This work aims to analyse the investment policy of the EU and mutual interaction of its institutions with the Member States and third parties. After general introduction to the topic of international investment law and EU law (chapters II. and III.), it is devoted to the issue of protection of foreign investment in the internal market. Its regime is then compared with the BIT regime (chapter IV.). Attention is then focussed towards the EU's external relations in the field of investment protection. Its competence is subjected to further analysis (chapter V.) and current results of efforts of the Commission and the EU as such are also discussed (chapter VI.). It is so in the light of possible impacts of foreign investment in terms of...
Analysis of Chinese foreign direct investment to Europe
Bystřický, Lukáš ; Semerák, Vilém (advisor) ; Paulus, Michal (referee)
Foreign direct investment (FDI) from China has been growing rapidly in the last decade and it has become a hotly debated topic. Some countries are actively trying to attract more, while others warn of dangers to local economy and even national security. Both, media and researchers have studied the problem extensively and the outcomes are not uniform. This thesis summarizes all available information and debunks common public misconceptions about Chinese FDI. It studies particular cases to provide a closer look into the innerworkings of investment decision-making. It studies the microeconomic factors and politics that influence the investors. Furthermore, it uses the gravity model to explore the macroeconomic determinants of Chinese FDI flows using the most recent data on 174 countries over 9 years. The results of this empirical part are similar to previous findings and contribute to the existing pool of literature. In addition, they confirm the notion from previous chapters which reappears throughout the thesis. In contrast with media and politicians' statements, Europe is not the primary target for Chinese FDI. A Meta-Analysis of FDI Spillovers in China
Herman, Dominik ; Havránek, Tomáš (advisor) ; Semerák, Vilém (referee)
Assessment of the foreign direct investment (FDI) spillovers in the People's Republic of China (PRC) has become a lively area of research in the past decades; nonetheless, the existing primary literature seems to be inconclusive. The present thesis revises the literature through a meta-analytical approach using Bayesian Model Averaging (BMA). Considering that the previous liter- ature reviews are of either inferior quality or incomparable focus, our research is based on a collection of 1081 estimates from 14 primary studies published between 2007 and 2017 comprising data from 1995 to 2012. A variety of 85 characteristics of the observations is coded whilst we employ at least 30 of these within each BMA estimation. Through separate testing of individual spillover measures (horizontal, forward, and backward), an extensive evidence of publication bias is collected for horizontal spillovers in PRC-exaggerating the mean magnitude of the reported estimates. Finally, the thesis identifies that the spillover effect from FDI inflows originating from the area of Hong Kong, Macau, and Taiwan is systematically different from the others. The migration-development nexus: Evidence from the Philippines
Hurajová, Lucia
This diploma thesis is aimed to investigate both theoretically and empirically the impact of migration on the development of the sending countries. It applies the "Three Rs" approach to examine how migrants can shape development reshape in their areas of origin via 3Rs: Recruitment, Remittances, and Return. Emphasis is put on remittances, the most visible aspect of international migration. In particular, regression analysis were carried out, using time series data over the period 1990-2014, to establish a relationship between remittances and development aspects such as economic and human development as well as comparing them with the effect of FDI and ODA. The findings indicate that migration through remittances play an influential role in the Philippines development but it comes at a price, too.
