Attitudes of the ECCB members towards current social moral issues
Lavický, Jan ; Halama, Jindřich (advisor) ; Janečková, Hana (referee)
In my diploma thesis, I deal with five socio-moral topics and with the attitudes of members of The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB) towards them. These topics are: 1) Marriage and family 2) Homosexuality 3) Ethnical minorities 4) Dispute over the legacy of communism 5) Refugees and immigrants. First part of the thesis is dedicated to the official statements of the synod and the Synodal Council. Furthermore, this chapter reveals the process leading to adopting these positions. This rather descriptive part is followed by a sociological survey of opinions on the issues, mentioned above, held by members of ECCB. The aim of the survey is to figure out, whether these opinions are in agreement with the official statements. The final chapter is dedicated to data evaluation. The main goal of my diploma thesis is to find out what issues are for ECCB members easy to agree on and in which cases are the opinions rather individualized. The Bequest of the Unity of the Brethren in the Lore and Practice of the Contemporary Protestant Churches in the Czech Republic
Medková, Lydie ; Veverková, Kamila (advisor) ; Lášek, Jan Blahoslav (referee)
This theses researches the bequest of The Unity of the Brethren in the lore and practice of the contemporary protestant churches in the Czech Republic. The first part evaluates numerous sources to concretize the bequest of The Unity of Brethren to ten points, which represent the most specific characteristics of its lore. The second part focuses on comparison of the previously specified bequest of The Unity of Brethren with practice and lore of particular contemporary churches. Through analysis of church sources and structured interviews with the heads of contemporary churches the thesis shows which points of the bequest of The Unity of Brethren actually appear in the lore of the examined churches and to what extend these points influence the real life of the communities. The main objective of the thesis is to examine whether the rich Brethren tradition can be found in today's Czech churches. Moreover this work also asks to what extend these churches manage to keep the Brethren bequest alive in the modern social environment.

The Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren in Democratic Revolution 1989
Dvořáčková, Magdalena ; Kopeček, Michal (advisor) ; Matějka, Ondřej (referee)
The aim of the thesis is an analysis of the Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren (ECCB) in the democratic revolution 1989. The main questions the author asks are what did the democratic revolution mean for ECCB and how did the ECCB respond to this, how did the ECCB evolve in the first year of the liberal democratic system and how did the ECCB put up with the communist past. Method of thesis is historical analysis. This method is critical evaluation of archival sources, which are articles in the evangelical journals from this era and secondary literature. Publications used to indicate context deal with democratic revolution 1989 chart the history of the ECCB in 1948-1989 and value this period by members of the ECCB themselves. Democratic revolution gave the ECCB not only the freedom, but the oportunity to evaluate recent past, as well. The splitting-up of the church, roots of which were deep in times of nondemocratic system, grew up, due to different approach to this affair in the ECCB. Josef Hromádka, synod senior and deputy chairman in the Government of National Understanding, played a specific role in the discussion of the ECCB. Despite of uncertainty and disunity, the ECCB made a few specific steps to putting up with communist past, which were more significant than in other Churches in the Czech...

Novák, Jiří ; Marková, Alena (advisor) ; Štemberk, Jan (referee)
This diploma thesis deals with so called "transfer movement" in Mělník in 1921. The term "transfer movement" refers to a strong campaign which tried to persuade people to leave the Roman Catholic Church before the census of February 1921 in or der to the emancipation of our nation from the Church would have been expressed. The general principle of the movement was that the Rome had always been our enemy, that the reformation is the very essence of our national identity and that the Catholic Church had been an ally of the Habsburg dynasty. The thesis tries to explore the role of the leading groups of the "transfer movement" (especially Czechoslovak Church, Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren and Freethought) and of the press in Mělník as well as the reaction of the local catholic clergy. The core of the work is based mainly on primary sources (both archive and published). It was found that the transfer movement was rather successful. No violent clashes were reported. Protestant congregations and Spiritualism in Podkrkonoší
Kletvík, Jan ; Halama, Ota (advisor) ; Rejchrtová, Noemi (referee)
After 1781 there were established several Protestant congregations in Podkrkonoší (North-East Bohemia). Approximately one hundred years later, the whole region was greatly affected by Spiritualism, a belief in communication with spirits of the dead through mediums. My objective is to describe the attitudes of the Protestant congregations in Podkrkonoší towards Spiritualism and analyse their causes and effects. Understanding these attitudes will yield an insight into the character of the present congregations. For this purpose, I studied the congregations in Libštát, Křížlice, and Jičín. In particular I focused on their parish priests because they had the control over their flock in these questions. I went through the archival materials of the respective congregations as well as personal diaries, and I analysed the memories of several interviewed people. These findings were then compared with the attitudes of some congregations in Great Britain. The results revealed three different approaches of the priests. Some were very radical, which led to excommunication of Spiritualists. Others were rather tolerant, which resulted in integration of Spiritualists. Finally, some priests were quite secretive, so their parishioners may not have seen a clear line between Spiritualism and Christianity.
Church views on euthanasia in the Czech Republic
Mlýnková, Kristýna ; Vogel, Jiří (advisor) ; Veverková, Kamila (referee)
This Master's thesis named "Approaches of Czech Churches towards Euthanasia" studies the topic of euthanasia through position papers of four selected churches active in the Czech Republic. The four examined churches are Roman Catholic Church, Orthodox Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia, Evangelical Church of Czech Brethren, and Czechoslovak Hussite Church whereas documents published by ecumenical panels are studied as well. The goal of the thesis is to create a statement overview of these four churches. First, the work introduces the topic itself, explains basic terms and development of different approaches. Second, it analyses position papers of examined churches which are subsequently compared in order to find the aspects which are common to the all four churches.
