Server consolidation as a process within an organization
Hartmann, Petr ; Bruckner, Tomáš (advisor)
Abstract This thesis deals with the process of server consolidation, which is tightly connected to IT infrastructure of virtually any organization. Moreover it is dealt in some respect with the way the organization runs and with linking these two particular areas together. The goal of this thesis is to identify consequences or impacts of server consolidation process on the way the organization functions and on methods how to measure these impacts. One of the steps towards this goal is unmistakably analyzing the planning and deployment of server consolidation including virtualization technology. Server consolidation is characterized as a process leading to simplified and more effective IT infrastructure of an organization. To analyze the IT infrastructure in complete and systematic way it is used framework called IT Infrastructure Library respectively part of it called ICT Infrastructure Management. Because of that linking of the server consolidation process progress to organization's global goals is granted. Contribution of this thesis can be seen in complex analysis of the consequences of the server consolidation process to the functioning of an organization. Especially in areas that are usually not being considered in connection with server consolidation, which is considered to be IT matter, such as human resources and social enviroment. Key words: server consolidation, server consolidation consequences, ICT Infrastructure Management, Virtualization
Server consolidation and virtualization
Rybák, Martin ; Bruckner, Tomáš (advisor) ; Zima, Radek (referee)
The thesis deals with the topic of complexity of current IT. As a result, the consolidation of servers using virtualization is the answer to permanently growing complexity of server infrastructure. The thesis summarizes the basic aspects of this issue, compares the contributions and tries to analyze problems which can emerge. Further, it points a way of consolidation journey, compares different types of virtualization and elaborates the contributions of virtualization for corporate IS/ICT and its flexibility of solution. It analyzes present state of the market with virtualization tools, describes and compares some products of the market key players and analyzes the new opportunities for virtualization, e. g. the virtual desktop infrastructure. At the end, it suggests an approach for consolidated project solution in practice and tries to show some basic steps which should not be omitted. Besides the complex view to the topic, the thesis also presents the contributions, risks and questions to be raised and, at least partly, answers these questions.

The thesis is also aimed at the characteristics of higher education and basic differences from commercial sphere. Based on defined differences and identified interconnections between BCM and Cloud Computing, the thesis argues for usage of suitable Cloud Computing solution for higher education regarding Business Continuity improvement. The multi-criterion comparison of several Infrastructure-as-a-Service solutions stems from this analysis focusing on technical, financial, and Business Continuity aspects. The result from this comparison together with conclusions from previous chapters serve as an input for subsequent practical proposal of Cloud Computing solution and its verification against Business Continuity improvement in specific conditions on University of Economics in Prague. The proposal is also represented by strategic map.
