Luba and Rudolf Pellar: Translations from English

The history of translation is a very important part of literature and to study it is crucial for many reasons. New translators always continue in some already existing tradition which is therefore important to study, analyze and also to learn from. This bachelor thesis deals with the translations from English by Luba and Rudolf Pellar who were translating for almost fifty years. Because their life experience can influence their work, the first part of this thesis deals with their lives and also summarizes some selected translations. The second part of this work is the analysis of selected translations. However, first of all, the translations of titles of the particular texts are analyzed because even they can tell a lot about the method of a translator. Consequently, the three selected texts- The Catcher in the Rye (Kdo chytá v žitě) by J.D. Salinger, Across the River and into the Trees (Přes řeku do stínu stromů) by Ernest Hemingway and American Pastoral (Americká Idyla) by Philip Roth- are analyzed in detail. These texts were selected because they represent equally the whole career of Pellar and the development of the method of translation can be observed in them. Comparison of lives and works of E. A. Poe and Stephen King/ What can make people write horror stories?

The bachelor thesis is concerned with the comparison of lives and works of Edgar Allan Poe and Stephen King. In the theoretical part of the thesis the horror genre and its typical features are introduced together with outlining both writers' brief biographies. The main part focuses on the analogies between the authors' lives and similarities in the topics and motifs of their work. Poe and King are world-wide famous horror writers; and besides the obvious similarities, such as the nationality and the choice of genre, there are many parallel events and influences in their lives that might have affected the literary production. The thesis provides a deeper analysis of those facets and it puts them in context with their works. The last part interconnects the findings made throughout and explores the tentative thesis as to whether there can be something that can "make" a person write horror stories.

J.K.Toole, Kurt Vonnegut, Jr. and Ken Kesey: Authority and Grotesque in the U.S. Literature of The 1960s.

The dissertation focuses on the impact of authority and grotesque in the U.S. literature of the 1960s. The key theoretical approaches used for the analysis were: Bakhtinian theory concerning popular carnival culture and Vizenor's theory concerning tricksters, Deleuzian notion of repetition and schizoanalysis and the theory of Foucault concerning power and anti- authority struggles. The main task of the analysis was to trace the common and differentiating features which were demonstrated in the novels in the form of anti-authority struggles and forms of madness, which is viewed as a deliberating force. The authors were chosen for their challenging attitudes toward the forms of power exercised over the American society and for the usage of the grotesque as a tool to convey a subversive message. The analysed authors were John Kennedy Toole and his A Confederacy of Dunces, Kurt Vonnegut Jr. and his Slaughterhouse 5 and Ken Kesey's One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest.

Narrative strategies in the short stories of Raymond Carver

The thesis Vypravěčské strategie v povídkách Raymonda Carvera deals with the literary concept of a narrator. It's results - typologically different narrators and their characterizations - are based on reading and analysis of all published Carver's short stories. The thesis is divided into two main parts - into the theoretical part in which we briefly introduce the development and fundamental concepts of narrator in the literary theory (e.g. in concepts of F. K. Stanzel, K. Friedmann, G. Genette, T. Todorov, D. Cohn, S. Chatman, J. Culler, J. H. Miller and W. C. Booth) and into the practical part which analyses and characterizes those narrative strategies and types with the use of previously introduced terms and theories. The result of this thesis is a lucid list of different narrative types in Carver's short stories.

F. S. Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway - Acrimonious Rivalry or Literary Friendship?

This bachelor work concentrates on the friendship of two significant writers F. Scott Fitzgerald and Ernest Hemingway who were part of an American group called the Lost Generation. The work is focused not only on their lives in light of their vicinity, but also on the exchanged correspondence of these authors. As such, it tries to find and, eventually, interpret the hidden purpose of their behavior and opinions. The conclusion summarizes the importance of the friendship of these literary giants with respect to their private and working lives.

Southern Gothic: Macabre Heroes in Toole's Neon Bible and McCarthy's Child of God

The aim of this diploma thesis is to compare the protagonists of two novels which are classified as Southern gothic writings: Child of God by Cormac McCarthy, and The Neon Bible by John Kennedy Toole. Although the pivotal characters appear dissimilar, the comparison and analysis of the novels might demonstrate common features and motifs. Studying of Southern gothic phenomena constitutes a background for the analysis, and also the initial part of the thesis. It is focused on a basic characteristic of the genre on the basis of the development of Southern literature. There is an introduction of the most important authors, genres, and typical motifs. The analytical part is prefaced by a reference to the life and work of the writers, as their nature and literary production vary. There is more attention paid to the texts by McCarthy because he has published a larger quantity of books in comparison with Toole. Southern gothic elements are therefore observed and compared in the analysed short novels, and also in other McCarthy's texts. The comparison corresponds to the theoretical ground.

Translations of Poetry of E. A. Poe in the Context of Czech Liteatury

Diploma thesis Translation's of Edgar Allan Poe's Poems in the Context of the Czech Literature maps Edgar Allan Poe's influence on Czech culture in the context of Czech literary science. It analyzes chosen theoretical essays and on their basis constructs a continuous picture of understanding of Poe's texts and his personality in specified period of time since year 1945 until today. The thesis' goal is to depict the relationship between Edgar Allan Poe and Czech culture, to state the changes in understanding throughout the different time periods and to reflect on its importance. The whole work is divided into two parts, the first one reminds results of preceding research, whereas the second one expands on them. Bibliography on Poe's work and personality and the list of all Poe's works published in Czech language represent also important parts of the work.

Man and Woman: Couples in Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales

The aim of this thesis is to focus on the relationships between men and women in Nathaniel Hawthorne's Twice-Told Tales. Every couple is presented with a problem which has to be solved or an obstacle that must be overcome. The characters are in various stages of their relationships and they vary in their age, too. Therefore the thesis is divided into four main parts regarding the period the characters represent, that is engagement, wedding day, marriage and the period of mourning. Every period is represented by two couples that are analysed and compared. The conclusion is an attempt to present the principles that seem to emerge from the comparison.

Etické aspekty obrazu lesa v díle N. Hawthornea

The diploma thesis is focused on analysis and interpretation of Nathaniel Hawthorne?s literature work and its specific theme: the role of the forest and its ethical aspects in particular stories. The principle of this work is focused on general relationship between American literature and the theme of the forest, which is deeply rooted in the history of American colonization and creating new American nation. The main aim is to point out the specific role of the forest in American literature (especially the influence of puritanism and transcendentalism). Another aim is to find out if the forest really represents important moral aspects and influences the behaviour of both individuals and the whole society in Hawthorne?s work. Answers to these questions can be found in the fundamental part of the diploma thesis, which is based on the literary analysis of particular texts, novels and short stories, in which the world of the forest is confronted with the problems of morality and faith.
