Cotton Industry and the Civil War in the USA
Tomeš, Pavel ; Tajovský, Ladislav (advisor) ; Chalupecký, Petr (referee)
The topic of this work is production of raw cotton in USA before the civil war. Cotton growing is typical industry, in which slave labour has been used. Cotton production in the second half of 19th century was important industry worldwide. This is the reason why I use this industry to analyze slavery. Some slaves had higher level of nourishment than some free labourers in the North. This is the reason why I focus on calculation of costs, which were paid for use a slave labour. I make a cost analysis of cotton production and I also calculate income of this production. In opposite this situation I create a hypothetical model situation. In this model would plantation owners employ free labourers. Results of this model I compare with costs of war which were paid by South. This way I figure out motivations for South to make war and defend slavery. By analytic method and theoretical model I gain better picture of slave plantations and importance of slavery for whole southern economy. JEL classification N310, N410, N510, J230, J320

The Transformation of the U.S. Labor Market during the Period 1939-1945
Šafařík, Martin ; Johnson, Zdenka (advisor) ; Tajovský, Ladislav (referee)
This bachelor thesis focuses on the influence of the Second World War on the labor market in the USA. In addition to explaining changes to the labor market as a whole, an emphasis is put on the labor market with regard to specific relevant minorities (namely women, Americans of Japanese descent and Afro-Americans). The main part of each chapter is devoted to sector changes in employment on the supply side of the market. This thesis indicates that the circumstances of the Second World War and the Postwar Era greatly shaped the circumstances of the U.S. labor market during these periods. Employment during this time also demonstrated characteristics of being affected greatly by these significant events. The results of this thesis also indicate that the Second World War in the context of the labor market contributed to breaking certain social barriers connected to the process of employment, which in turn accelerated the social evolution of some groups.

Distribution, binding and mobility of Ni in soil in the closed Ni mining area in the vicinity of Křemže
Pipková, Zuzana ; Ettler, Vojtěch (advisor) ; Vaněk, Aleš (referee)
Soils in the vicinity of Křemže in the Southern Bohemia are developed on altered ultrabasic rocks. The occurrence of Ni-hydrosilicate and Fe-rich ores in this area lead to their mining mainly during 19th century, then during the World War II. This thesis is focused on distribution and availability of Ni, Cr and Co and accompanying elements in soils at former mine and prospection sites (2 soil profiles and 32 topsoil samples at historical surface mine area). In all soil samples, physico-chemical parameters (pH, TOC, TS) and bulk concentrations of Al, Ca, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Mg, Mn, Ni, Pb and Zn were measured. In addition, deionised water, DTPA and EDTA extracts were used to determine the (bio)availability and mobility of these elements. Some of trace elements were found in elevated concentrations in the mining area topsoils; mean Ni: 1175 mg/kg (range 545-2849 mg/kg), mean Cr: 416 mg/kg (240-849 mg/kg), mean Co: 127 mg/kg (65-238 mg/kg), mean Fe: 49155 mg/kg (30460-113800 mg/kg), mean Mg: 12648 mg/kg (8795-18770 mg/kg) and mean Mn: 1480 mg/kg (1028-2319 mg/kg). In soil profiles the Ni availability decreased with depth. In the uppermost organic O horizon in forest soil profile, 19.5 % and 23.8 % of total Ni was extracted by DTPA and EDTA, respectively. The extractabilities are decreasing down to mineral...

Arnošt Lustig and experience of the Holocaust in light of theory of narration Abstract. Means of implementation Nazi program of exterminating the Jews, which was designed and implemented during the Second World War, had an instrument of realization in a concentration camp, where prisoners not only of died, but there was organized devaluation of their lives. We talk about it as a "model form of government", reasonably elaborate system, in which prisoners should believe, that their life has no meaning, and on the other hand they are exposed to "limit situations", that create pressure on their survival instinct, and thus affect their behavior. From world of ever-present death prisoners brought experience, about which many could not and others needed to talk. However, they meet with an inability to express this experience. There grow up a debate whether the facts are trivializing. The threat of trivializing is seen also in artistic representation. As one of the options for capture the experience of the Holocaust is mentioned concentration on the internal experience of the individual, which can by displayed mainly by art literature, whch is looking for new expressive and formal means to "communicate an incommunicable" trauma. Among the writers of literature, who comes from their own camp experiences is ranked...

Hošek, Martin ; Lomová, Olga (advisor) ; Šedivý, Ivan (referee) ; Liščák, Vladimír (referee)
This thesis deals with the exploits of Czechoslovak army in Russia towards the end of the First World War. In 1918 it was transferred from the theatre of war in European Russia to the Far East via Siberia and from there by the A11ied navies to Europe, according to the A11ies plans to use them to strengthen the war against the Germans on the Western front. It deals in particular with the so called Vladivostok group, the avant-garde of the Czechoslovak army, which, though bound for France, returned to Siberia in order to reinforce the other Czechoslovak units locked in conflict with the Bolsheviks for control of the Trans-Siberian railway. The author of this thesis, who is a sinologist, therefore focuses his attention on the period of transportation along the Chinese Eastern Railway in the second half of 1918. This involves an analysis and clarification of the very complex situation when the Czechoslovak legionnaires were crossing Chinese territory and their controversial employment in the Allied intervention against Soviet Russia, which was manipulated by the Japanese army to further its expansionist aims in the Far East.
