Compassion in nursing
POSPÍŠILOVÁ, Vladimíra
Modern Nursing is characterized by growing expert and technical perfection, but also by weakening compassion and its role in nursing. Together with technical development, humanism in nursing slowly gains more and more importance. The bachelor thesis named "Compassion in nursing" is of theoretical character and its aim is to analyse the issue of compassion in nursing and point to its meaning. The thesis is conceived as an analytical study with a subsequent processing of interpretative text. In relation to text analysis the following questions have been submitted: How is compassion in nursing reflected? What does the advantage of compassion in nursing rest in? The interpretative analysis of individual sources has proven that empathy and compassion are important components as the basic pressumptions of humanization in nursing. In reality, however, nursing is often influenced by lack of empathy and compassion from the medical staff´s side. Compassion in nursing is thus reflected unsatisfactorily due to the nurses´ insufficient preparation, and low support in organization and management of healthcare facilities. Compassion is a significant component of professional nursing, it takes a positive part in provided healthcare, it increases its quality and patients´ comfort. The advantages of compassion on nursing is completely obvious, and unreplaceable by anything. In addition its need will keep growing with the development of informational and communicational technologies, as healthcare electronization will prove itself in nursing dehumanization. That will have to be faced necessarily via compassion deepening, creating responding healthcare systems, systematic teaching of compassion, and compassionate care evaluation and remuneration from the management´s side. In this context, improving nursing staff´s knowledge and skills in psychology and psychotherapy, developing personal requirements and strengthening their communication including active listening will be necessary.
The role of nurses in patient education with mental illness.
NĚMCOVÁ, Veronika
This Bachelor Thesis is divided into two parts and deals with the issue of an education of patients with mental illness. The theoretical part deals with the field of psychiatry, its historical development, causes of mental illness and the classification of it. Furthermore, in the theoretical part I elaborated the area of nursing care for patients with mental illness, including its specifics, the sphere of communication in nursing care and specifically with patients with mental illness. Last but not least, we are focusing on educational activities with patients with mental illness. The second practical part is dedicated to the course and to the results of the research. The research took place in the first half of 2017 at the acute psychiatric ward at the outpatient and inpatient ward. The main objective was focused on the role of the nurse in educating a patient with mental illness with regard to his diagnosis and related problems. After setting the main goal, we identified three partial objectives: the intellectual, practical and the personal goal. These objectives have become the basis for creation of five research questions. Based on these questions, questions were created which were used in interviews with subjects. The semi-structured interview method was selected for the realization of the research, including basic and supplementary questions. Additional questions were asked during interviews with subjects if necessary. The research group consists of eight nurses working at the outpatient and inpatient ward of the psychiatric ward of one of the Pilsen Region hospitals. Interviews with subjects were always at a prearranged place. The subjects were informed about anonymity, not including the name of the hospital facility which they work in. After the data collection was completed, the results were examined using coding and categorization. The subjects' replies were exactly recorded in precreated categories. During the research, we focused on the role of the nurse in educating a patient with a mental illness. We have been asking our sisters, for example, what they see as obstacles towards effective education, what purpose they see in educating a patient with mental illness etc. A research survey showed that the interviewed nurses do not have enough quality educational materials to help them throughout the educational process. Another factor that influences the educational process is, according to our research, the complete lack of dedicated time space for the education of patients with mental illness. It was also found that despite sufficient motivation of nurses, they lacked enough information related to their focus, in the context of lifelong learning, which would help them in the communication and educational process. We believe, that one of many solutions for our researched workplace would be to set apart time for the educational activity of the nurse, providing the nurses with more effective materials and quality education in the field. We believe that our Bachelor Thesis will be a contribution to the further professional focus and life of the author and to all readers of this Bachelor Thesis. This work also opens up a space for research on larger scales given to the phenomenon we have determined.
The need for security and safety in connection with a planned surgery with the patient's perspective and nurses
BOHDALOVÁ, Jaroslava
A planned operation performance always affects patient´s needs for assurance and safety. It is important to provide necessary information connected with the planned operation performance itself so that the patient can feel assure and safe. The key role for the patient and her/his needs for assurance and safety is in general nurse´s hands because she is the closest person to the patient and can help to inspire her/his needs for assurance and safety with konfidence best through the aid of her knowledge and skills that she should have as well as through the aid of her attitudes. The target of the thesis was to find out how a planned operation performance affects patient´s needs for assurance and safety and how a general nurse inspires patient´s needs for assurance and safety connected with a planned operation performance with confidence. The following research questions were stated: How does a planned operation performance affect patient´s needs for assurance and safety? How does a general nurse affect patient´s needs for assurance and safety connected with a planned operation performance to inspire her/him with confidence? What is insufficient in filling patient´s needs for assurance and safety before a planned operation performance? How can a general nurse help a patient control her/his fear and state of anxiety related to a planned operation performance? The method qualitative research with the use of depth interview was used to figure out the investigation. The respondents were willing to record the interview which were verbally rewritten and then subjected to the contents analysis by the method paper and pencil. From the research it is clear that a planned operation performance affects patient´s needs for assurance and safety in a negative way disregarding to her/his previous experience. Patient´s worries and negative feelings can be eliminated by a general nurse who treats her/him as equal, taking up an individual approach, informing her/him about all performances and proceedings, having a calming and welcoming way of communication, using empathy and listening as well as trying to meet patient´s wishes according to her possibilities. The research reveals the advantage of patients´ readiness for planned operation performances. Patients can learn it in the framework of educational proceeding in the out-patients´ department at the same time when they learn that they are going to be operated. The research also shows that general nurses do not have enough knowledge in the sphere of therapeutical communication. The results indicate that it would be suitable to start educating patients as soon as it is known how their disease will be solved and treated in order to reduce the negative impact of surgical treatment to patients´ needs for assurance and safety. General nurses should complete their knowledge and skills to be able to help patients to cope with their difficult life-situation. On the basis of the research investigation and after the consultation with the senior nursing officer, the training course will be organized. The topic of the training course will concentrate on communication with patients before planned operation performances with a view to therapeutical communications and therapeutical interviews. Other discovered facts, for example, the lack of information provided to patients and possibilities regarding better patients´ readiness for planned operation performances will surely be solved by the hospital management.
