The Role of the Media in the Free Speech Movement at Berkeley
Pánková, Tereza ; Raška, Francis (advisor) ; Handl, Vladimír (referee)
The Bachelor thesis The Role of the Media in the Free Speech Movement at the University of California, Berkeley focuses mainly on the events of 1964, when Berkeley became the center of American political activism. In 1964, the university administration prohibited all political activity on the campus. The goal of the Free Speech Movement was to change this decision. The students were able to persuade the administration and their freedoms were restored. The thesis is divided into two main parts. The first part introduces the characteristics of the whole conflict, concentrates on the sources of the conflict as well as its phases and summarizes the impact and aftermath of the movement. The second part deals with the treatment of the movement by media and is divided into three chapters. The first focuses on tendency of the media to accuse the protestors of radicalism. The students participating in the movement were often called communists or beatniks. The second chapter is devoted to Mario Savio, the leader of the movement and the effect media had on his role. The media turned Mario Savio into a national celebrity, while other leading figures were completely ignored by the journalists. The last chapter concerns with the Daily Californian, Berkeley student newspaper, which had a big impact on the movement. Thanks...
The Protest Movement of 1968 in Great Britain
Hrabal, Tomáš ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Renner, Tomáš (referee)
This Bachelor thesis deals with the protest movement of 1968 in Great Britain while analysing its basis, particular examples and eventually its interpretation. The text is divided into four chapters. In the first chapter, attention is given to the socio-political context of the protests, in particular to the transformation of the society occuring in the 1960s, the policy of the Labour Party, British New Left and the peace movement of the 1950s and 1960s. The second chapter reports on three anti-Vietnam war marches in London. The circumstances of the marches are mentioned here as well as leading persons who initiated them. The marches are examined separately, the third and biggest one most in detail. In the third chapter, the examples of student protests at British universities and colleges are described with special emphasis on their causes. Eventually, in the fourth chapter, the protest movement is interpreted, i.e. the arguments of critics are outlined, concidering protests reasonless and existing only due to the action of radical groups. The validity of this opinions is proved using particular examples of protests.
Studentské hnutí v Chile: Původ, vývoj a vliv
Beranová, Marie ; Němec, Jan (advisor) ; Dvořáková, Vladimíra (referee)
Latin America cannot be conceived without acknowledging the social movements, which are often the engines of political and social changes on the continent. Until recently, Chile appeared to be the country where the social order was perceived as the most accomplished in relation to its politically unstable neighbouring countries, as well as in relation to its proper history. The 2011 student movement, which is the most significant social movement within the last twenty years of the Chilean history, can be completely understood only from a broader perspective of the 20th century. In order to understand the recent changes, the thesis deals with the phenomenon of the Chilean student movement studying its origins, historical trajectory and impact. The aim of the thesis is to explore the continuities and changes of the student movement and question why the 2011 protests are treated as a separate collective action in relation to the cycles of contention experienced in the 20th century.
