Urban Gardening: Motives and the Possibility of Transformation of the Public Space in the City
Papoušková, Kristina ; Illner, Michal (advisor) ; Grygar, Jakub (referee)
This diploma thesis pursues the phenomenon of urban gardening. It especially focuses on urban gardening in the form of community gardens, whose number has multiplied in Prague in the recent years. This trend has also caused an interest of the media and thus its is natural to research the motivation of the people, who participate in this activity, whether it is deeper or if it is just a fad. As a theroretical footing the ideas of Manuel Castells about urban social movements as well as the ideas of Henri Lefebvre about the right to the city were used. These authors believed that in the city the human scale is the most important and not financial value of the urban space. In the next part of the theoretical work the problem of public space and its interpretation in social sciences is presented. The analysis is dedicated to urban gardening in Prague. It aims to find whether it is just a temporary fashion or if the gardens could become permanent part of the public space in Prague. The function of community gardens is analysed with the use of a case study of one such garden. The work also tries to find out if the gardens in public space only bring positives or if they can also cause conficts.

The first part constitutes theoretical background of the empiric survey. It specifies a relation of branch disciplines to the selected topic and outlines the theoretical concepts associated with the main aspects of this problem. Housing in new residential complex. The positives and negatives of living in the "new housing estates"
Dittrichová, Hana ; Buriánek, Jiří (advisor)
The thesis is a case study about Prague new housing estate, that is a build-up area very similar to housing estates from the socialist era. It differs in some aspects of living conditions on the other hand. The thesis is conceived as a "chapter from urban sociology". It's devided into three parts. The first part constitutes theoretical background of the empirical survey. It makes readers acquainted with the branch of urban sociology and with is narrower theme sociology of architecture. It puts forward basic conceptions of this branch - sociological perception of migration (move), neighbourhood, dwelling choice (and connected decision process) and satisfaction with it, public places and neighbourhood units (mixed-use areas). The thesis follows the situation at the Czech (Prague) housing market, that closes the whole theoretical part. The second part of the thesis describes an object of the case study - Slunečný vršek. It pictures the nearest locality and broader surrounding of the new housing estate. The theoretical part followed by description lead in the empirical part of quantitative empirical survey that was realized by questionnaing local inhabitants (inhabitants of the new housing estate Slunečný vršek). The survey aims at contribution toward the urban sociology. Wants to show the new point of...

Samec, Tomáš ; Šanderová, Jadwiga (advisor) ; Tuček, Milan (referee)
Issues of material, cultural and relationship consuption in context of late modern society are being discussed in the thesis. Differences between the social context of city and rural areas are used to describe social functions of consumption. At first consumption is defined in sociological terms using the literature. Thesis contains basic theoretical approaches dealing with consumption. Major interest is being put on analytical part of thesis, which shows findings of research. Research is divided into two parts. Qualitative part with data from semi-structured interviews, which are used to create concepts and hypothesis in order to test them in quantitative part with questionners. Research is a case study and findings and interpretations can not be generalized to whole population of young people. Data provide solid empirical conclusion and hypothesis though. My findings support idea of consuption as complex and ambivalent social phenomenon related to individualization process. Yet another social functions of consuption are revealed in thesis. Consuption as a device to define and redefine identity of individual. Normative aspect of consumption, which express itself in social groups norms. Significance of structural differences between both social context for individual's action with link to cultural and...
