Electoral Geography of Poland After 1989
Šulc, Jan ; Mlejnek, Josef (advisor) ; Kubát, Michal (referee)
The rigorous thesis Electoral Geography of Poland After 1989. The Spatial Dimension of the Results of Presidential Elections and Elections to the Sejm of the Republic of Poland explores the spatial distribution of patterns of electoral behavior in Poland on the basis of analysis of the results of all presidential elections and elections to the Sejm that took place in the country between the years 1990-2011. The main hypothesis tested in this rigorous thesis is that former boundaries between Russia, Prussia (Germany) and Austria (Austria-Hungary), between which the territory of modern-day Poland was divided in the 19th century, still have an impact on Poland's electoral geography. On the basis of this hypothesis political parties and presidential candidates are divided into two pre-defined categories: traditionalist and modernist. The validity of the hypothesis is then proven by visual analysis of political parties' and presidential candidates' electoral maps, and also by the application of Pearson's correlation coefficient on political parties' electoral results from constituencies and presidential candidates' electoral results from voivodships. In contemporary Poland a clear rift exists between the parts of the country formerly dominated by Prussia (Germany) and major Polish cities on the one hand (also...
Changing geographical pattern of Turkey: The Analysis of factors determining country's polarization
Zinek, Jiří ; Tomeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Nováček, Aleš (referee)
Regional differentiation is a complex phenomenon concerning all countries of the world, which is analyzed by countless studies, but without a generally accepted theoretical anchorage. The Thesis deals with the transformation of Turkish regional image at multiple levels from 1975 to 2018. This transformation is analyzed by a set of selected demographic and socioeconomic indicators. The main objective is to document and evaluate Turkish regional demographic and socioeconomic differentiation, which leads to the country's polarization. The Thesis is based on statistical data from the Turkish Statistical Office. The geographical concentration of demographic and socioeconomic indicators was illustrated by tabular and map outputs. Sigma convergence evaluating the evolution of differentiation of individual indicators Gini coefficients are shown by graphs. The multiple regression analysis method examined the impact of geographical aspects on selected demographic and socioeconomic indicators. Significant part of the Thesis also deals with Turkish political- geographical context and the theoretical approaches on which it is based.
Accessibility of health care in the Czech Republic according to the geodemographic characteristics of the population
Novák, Martin
Accessibility of health care in the Czech Republic according to the geodemographic characteristics of the population Abstract Public healthcare is a subject that affects us all. The health and medical status of the population is a key measure of how advanced a country is. That is why healthcare issues attract so much debate. A number of factors affect the health of a nation. On one hand there are factors such as how individuals look after their health. Dietary habits, sufficient physical exercise and preventive care are all factors that the individual has control over. On the other hand, however, there are determinants affecting whether healthcare take-up is adequate. The cost of providing healthcare and medical equipment together with healthcare accessibility - the topic of this thesis - are factors affecting the population's health. It is the duty of all public healthcare stakeholders to limit the impact of these determiners. One of the main barriers to healthcare take-up is accessibility. On 1 January 2013 government decree no. 307/2012 Coll. came into effect quantifying healthcare accessibility for the first time. This law stipulates the local and travel time accessibility that ensures accessibility depending on type of healthcare on the basis of an upper travel time limit or waiting period....
Gender Index in the Czech Public Firms
Velková, Eliška ; Cahlík, Tomáš (advisor) ; Chadimová, Kateřina (referee)
This bachelor thesis examines the extent of gender inequality in the Czech labour market. More specifically, it explores the under-representation of women on board positions using an analysis prepared by Open Society which contains data of more than 500 Czech public firms. The data analysis is made using the method of Kohonen self-organizing maps. SOMs represent a type of artificial neural network which allows to uncover possible patterns in a dataset and also visualize the multi-dimensional input data as a two-dimensional mapping while preserving topological properties of the input. To date, there is no academic paper examining gender inequality on decision-making positions in the Czech labour market using the method of Kohonen maps. The used dataset includes 77 Czech regions and 14 variables. A choice of appropriate factors that may influence the participation of women in the labour market is essential. The results are presented in 5 clusters of regions which differ in level of gender gap. In conclusion, our results prove that self-organizing maps are a useful data mining tool which can simply interpret high-dimensional data sets. 1
How to support the convergence of socioeconomic indicators in Indonesian provinces?
Ježková, Veronika
The thesis looks for the answer to the question how to support the convergence in of Socioeconomic Indicators in Provinces of Indonesia. Together with literature review, the analytical part concerns the regional disparities and convergence of socioeconomic indicators in given period from 2010 to 2015. The analytical contains the analysis of betaconvergence calculated by regression line and the analysis of sigmaconvergence computed on the base of standard deviation change throughout the years. All this implies in proposal part where the suggestion to continuous convergence are specified: sustainable development, human development, capital mobility, labour force mobility.
Impact of Regional Differences on P2P Lending, Evidence from China
Liang, Na ; Pečená, Magda (advisor) ; Semerák, Vilém (referee)
Taking the representative P2P lending platform Renrendai as an example, this paper focuses on the impact of borrower's region on the behavior of lenders and borrowers in the market. According to the Chinese six geographical regions the borrowers are from, this paper empirically analyzes the difference of success rate of borrowing and default rate in the six regions using the binary logistic regression model and further studies the reasons behind the regional difference. The result shows that the impact of regional difference is significant and the borrower from northern China are more likely to fund successfully, but the impact of regional difference on the default rate is insignificant, and the economic, financial and education development level in regions have a significant impact on the success rate of borrowing. This paper studies the regulatory differences of P2P platforms in various regions of China, the result shows that eastern China, central and southern China, and Beijing (in northern China) have paid more attention and importance to the regulation of P2P platforms. Keywords : China; P2P lending; the success rate of borrowing; regional difference; regulation policy
Regional differences in the population development of the USA, focusing on the 21st century
Naxera, Martin ; Šídlo, Luděk (advisor) ; Šťastná, Anna (referee)
Regional differences in the population development of the USA, focusing on the 21st century Abstract This paper examines the population development problematics of four Census Regions of the USA designated by the U.S. Census Bureau during the time period of 2000-2017. Using the standard demographic analytical methods of public access population estimates, public health and migration data, significant differences are found. Most significant differences are found in case of the migration between Census Regions. Additionally, the paper examines the effect of the Great Recession, which was peaking during the years 2007-2009, on the population development. Especially the fertility characteristics seem to be affected by this event. Keywords: population development, USA, regional differences, economic recession
Regional differentiation of fertility according to legitimacy in the Czech Republic, 1993-2012
Říhová, Kristýna ; Fialová, Ludmila (advisor) ; Šťastná, Anna (referee)
Regional differentiation of fertility according to legitimacy in the Czech Republic, 1993-2012 Abstract The aim of this thesis is to analyze the evolution of marital and extra-marital fertility in the Czech Republic between 1993-2012. In addition to a brief overview of the Czech Republic, the focus is on data for the districts. To demonstrate the developments and comparisons, we selected the starting and ending years and also the years 1999 and 2008. Thus, the years in when the least and the most children were born. Because of different numbers of births during the years surveyed between individual districts, comparisons of percentages of births were chosen. We have demonstrated that there are differences between districts and larger proportion of children who were born outside of marriage, especially single mothers in the districts in the northwest, the north, and the northeast of the Czech Republic. These data were illustrated in using cartograms with the help of ArcMac. We also focused on the relationship between the birth order of the child and the mother's marital status. Here, we demonstrated that the share of children born to single mothers is higher in children of the firstborn than of the second- and third- born. Keywords: Marital and extra-marital fertility, mother's marital status, birth order,...
The changing Sweden's regional pattern and its context
Klíma, David ; Tomeš, Jiří (advisor) ; Anděl, Jiří (referee)
Regional disparities and spatial inequality are typical topics studied by geography. Sweden is one of the most homogeneous and egalitarian countries in the world. Simultaneously, it is characteristic for its very low regional disparities and thus it is an important and interesting subject for studying. The main goal of this thesis is to examine changes in a regional pattern from the beginning of the 1990s and to analyse an impact of structural changes (deindustrialization and tertiarization) and globalization (through activities of transnational corporations) on regional disparities. In the thesis socioeconomic and demographic indicators and quantitative statistics are used to analyse a development of regional disparities in Sweden and to examine a broader context of this development. The main finding of the thesis is a disproportional growth of metropolitan regions (mainly Stockholm). Share of metropolitan regions on population and socioeconomic activities is increasing and it is characterized by dynamic development which is intensified by high specialisation, major valued-adding activities, knowledge-based economy and localisation of transnational corporations. Regional variability is slowly increasing and disproportional growth of metropolitan regions contributes to this development. Thus the...
