Making Theatre in London
Nováková, Hana ; SÍLOVÁ, Zuzana (advisor) ; VEDRAL, Jan (referee)
The thesis examines contemporary British theatre focusing on the dynamic between a playwright, a director and an actor, which is very different in the UK from continental Europe. Describing specific London productions as well as the history of modern British theatre, it tries to identify what are the defining characteristics of British directing, acting and playwriting. Each chapter focuses on one of these elements and defines British theatre in realation to the Czech scene. By comparing selected productions of the same British play in Prague and London the author draws attention to the possible difficulties that might arise while staging British drama in a different cultural context.
Methodology of the Cooperation between the Director and Actor and Contermporary Theater Practice
Glogrová, Kateřina ; BURIAN, Jan (advisor) ; HRBEK, Daniel (referee)
The thesis deals with the cooperation between the director and actor during individual phases of the staging process as they appear in everyday theatre life. The indiviual phases of the staging process are supplemented by the author's own experience with managing the actors, which she gained especially in the course of her studies at the Drama Faculty of AMU. The second part of the thesis investigates the issues of inner truthfulness and the possibilities of its achievement within the production of a play. As a part of collecting the material for the thesis, the author conducted a research, which included interviews with three professional directors - Hana Burešová, Ladislav Smoček and Štěpán Pácl, whose methods of work are described. In the final part of the thesis the author states that it is difficult to draw general conclusions about the cooperation between the director and actor because it is always of subjective nature. The issue of inner truthfulness is similarly difficult to generalise. Due to the multiplicity of options, however, neither of them loses attractiveness for further research.

It seeks to identify specific primary impulses which had inspired individual projects and to track any subsequent evolution of these impulses, a process which the author defines as assignment formulation. The second part concentrates in more detail on collaboration with actors and explores the circumstances in which a free creative process can be established, the border between the actor's creation and the director's direction of the actor. The paper draws conclusions from the theatre creator?s and the spectator?s perspectives, it wonders about the meaning and the origin of theatre (co)creation, and is based on practical experience, as well as on the findings of theatre practitioners and theoreticians. The concept of theatre is used in the widest meaning of the word. The paper intentionally originates from and connects various performance arts ? it draws from the realization that the theatre is basically one, and that for theatre to happen one needs both: an active actor and an active spectator.
