"Managers of Fertility": Reproductive Technology and the Women's Experiences with Assisted Reproduction

The diploma thesis conceptualizes an experience of women with assisted reproduction and services offered in fertility clinics. The assisted reproduction is a medical method treating infertility. The scientific progress and the usage of new reproductive technologies bring up broad possibilities in reproduction. Regarding the biological explanation of human's life, the biomedicine discourse represents a dominant approach in reproduction and claims control over a conception of a new life. Women undergoing the assisted reproduction, which is offered in case of infertility, face new challenges related to social, economic, ethical, and legal issues. The major goal of this thesis is the analysis of an experience of women with assisted reproduction in state-funded and private fertility clinics while applying a feminist critical reading. Qualitative research is based on semi-structured interviews with women who have turned to medical experts for help and underwent the assisted reproduction or other reproductive methods to increase a chance of conception. Russia in the Ukrainian governmental discourse: From Crimea to Minsk II

Since 2014, the increased interest of academia to the Ukrainian-Russian relations was reflected in the growing number of publications on this problematics. In spite of this fact, there still exists a research gap on representations of Russia in Ukrainian discourses, which are often taken as self- obvious. This in turn may lead to incomplete understanding of Ukrainian policies towards Russia. The specific aim of this work is to provide an additional instrument for understanding Ukraine's foreign policy towards Russia. In order to provide an insight into the way the Ukrainian government perceived Russia, discourse analysis of chosen articulations was conducted. As this work demonstrates, the central element of representations of Russia in the Ukrainian governmental discourse were systematic attempts to delegitimize the Russian foreign policy towards Ukraine through undermining legitimacy of the Russian leadership. This was done in a number of ways: the discourse actively used historical dimension and constructed categorization of good and bad periods of Ukrainian-Russian relations, characterized Russia as archaic, non-civilized and aggressive, and separated Russian political elites from Russian citizens, thereby undermining internal legitimacy of the current Russian regime. The perfect woman : the analysis of movie characters of artificial female beings from the perspective of postmodern and post-theoretical approaches to the body and the identity constitution

The thesis focuses on the analysis of the basic types of the film characters portraying artificial women: creatures who combine "femininity" (humanity) and technology, and who show female sexual characteristics or features that are stereotypically perceived as female-like (e.g. female cyborgs, female androids, female robots). The characters are analyzed and approached from the perspective of postmodern philosophy and post-theory studies; the forming of their body and identity is analyzed on the account of the narrative. The aim of the thesis is to explore whether the film representations of female cyborgs are similar to real cyborgs in the sense that they bring liberalization from the point if view of posthumanism and cyberfeminism, or whether they can only be perceived as the prime form of the Foucaltian body-as-machine, i.e. perfectly controllable precise technicist bodies which are created by the current power dispositions. Constructing Female Orgasm in Selected Internet Media

The media form an integral part of our everyday life and have a significant impact on how we perceive, understand and construct reality, our part in it and our own identity. This diploma thesis is therefore concerned with the portrayal of the female orgasm in selected internet media that are aimed primarily at women. Through an analysis of selected internet articles, I show that an orgasm is not (just) a biological phenomenon, but it is more a discursive construct. At the same time, I introduce the ways the media help to (re)produce a common idea of what the female orgasm is, how to experience it, and what the consequences are of (not) experiencing it. On the one hand, the analysed media create an impression of a certain sexual emancipation of women; they stress a woman's right for sexual pleasure and orgasm. On the other hand, the way the topic of female orgasm is described creates a kind of universal formula for doing and experiencing sexuality. Despite declaring plurality and diversity, the media in fact create clearly defined boundaries and marginalize those who do not fit. Women in orange: Analysis of the relationship and the power in a total institution of female prison

5 Abstract This diploma thesis focuses on the structure of relationships and the influence of power in the documentary image of the total institution of female prisons. The total institution is, seen from the outside, an impenetrable institution. This fact enables us to analyse the structure of relationships and the influence of power more easily than in an open surroundings. The environment of female prisons is also defined from the point of view of gender - gender socialises us, we constantly refer to gender, gender is an organising principle. The aim of this diploma thesis is to find the answer where to gender projects itself in the environment of ostensibly no-gender determination. The research of the thesis defines the study of a docusoap, broadcasted at Nova TV in 2015. The study also contains an analysis of an interview with the producer of the show. Based on this analysis I come to the conclusion that within the documentary image of female prisons it is visible that the prison keeps the stereotyped image of a "real" woman and the whole prison is run according to this model. This means that gender stereotypes mirror mainly in everyday functions of the prison. This thesis will be focused on the analysis of the basic types of the female artificial movie characters - the beings connecting "femininity" (humanity) and technology. These characters holds the external female sexual signs or the characteristics stereotypically perceived as female (e.g. cyborg/cyborg woman, android woman, robotess). My issue will be examinated from the perspective of postmodern approach to the process of shaping their bodies and identities in relation to the narrative movie structure. The characters will be divided into categories based on their dominating physical and "social" function in the story. The subsequent identification and interpretation of physicality, identity and relations with other characters of the narrative will be based not only on principles of semiotic analysis, but will take into account especially the approach of postmodernism. The main theoretical basis for this paper will be the theory of poststructuralism and so called post theories - a theory of posthumanism, transhumanism and cyberfeminism.

Questioning Gender Through the Test of History: the Fiction of Jeanette Winterson and Ali Smith

This thesis focuses on the work of two contemporary authors, Ali Smith and Jeanette Winterson, and their treatment of the concepts of history and gender in their fiction. I argue that, by openly speculating about the nature of time and history, and by making their readers think about the origin of these notions, Smith and Winterson uncover the seemingly stable but, in actuality, very fragile roots of the 'truths' we take for granted. They explore the potentiality of the past, which, in turn opens up the present and the future. To support my argument, I turned to Hayden White and his theory of historiography and Paul Ricoeur's philosophy of time and history. The latter part of the thesis deals with gender, as well as biological sex and sexual orientation, and the way in which Smith and Winterson's texts put into practice Judith Butler's theory of gender performativity, and work towards the subversion of gender norms as well as the destabilisation of heteronormativity. Both parts of the thesis are closely connected; history serves to keep the laws that define gender, sex and sexuality intact, and, in turn, these laws are often adhered to solely by the virtue of their historicity. The Female Voice in Contemporary Theory

This BA thesis aims to inform Czech musicological circles about the current theoretical debate on female voice. Employing the method of close reading, the author introduces selected texts and reflections on the female voice, using phenomenology, feminist theory or psychoanalysis as a theoretical background. Last, but not least, the thesis provides an impetus to think about female voice in the context of contemporary music, which, with its frequent use of vocalisation without lyrics, is especially pertinent to the aforementioned debate.
