(in English): This bachelor thesis is focused on reaction of British communists to events in Czechoslovakia in the second half of sixties. The Import and Distribution of Gramophone Records under the Normalization in Socialist Czechoslovakia
Andrs, Jiří ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Michela, Miroslav (referee)
This work engages in the import and distribution of the audio storages, concretely the gramophone records to Czechoslovakia. A gramophone record - differently to other audio storages like reel-to-reel tape records or later the cassettes - was meanwhile also an artefact that personified an attractive exoticness of the western world and because of its format and graphical elaboration it represented a valuable object of popular culture. The work is based on the assumption that the development of Czechoslovak musical subcultures depended largely on the distribution of gramophone records. That is why author focuses his attention on the unofficial import of the LP records by private persons. The very limited state-controlled import of this product will be also partly taken in account. An important question within this work is the import of the west-made music from other socialist states. In many of those countries licenses of those LPs were released much more often than in CSSR. Compared to the original western LPs it was easier for Czechoslovakian citizens to reach them - because of better possibilities to travel to socialist countries and yet because of a relatively low prices of eastern presses. Student also tries to revise the common notion (typical for both academic and non-academic sphere)...
The Interwar Czechoslovak Perceptions of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk's Reforms
Černý, Jáchym ; Vojtěchovský, Ondřej (advisor) ; Scholz, Milan (referee)
This bachelor thesis is focused on reformist policy of first Turkish president Mustafa Kemal Atatürk. The contemporary Czechoslovak reflection of these reforms in diplomatic correspondence and principal newspapers is examined. The frequency of articles about Atatürk's reforms is outlined in introduction by examination of several chosen newspapers during October and November 1933, when the Republic of Turkey celebrated its 10th anniversary. The second chapter follows republican reforms and divides them into larger blocks by their subject instead of chronological order. In the third chapter the overall Czechoslovak reflection on a sample of diplomatic dispatches sent by delegates from Turkey and daily press is examined. Articles are chosen from main journals with preferably nationwide impact. In the analysis of articles, he focus is given on those with critical and evaluative features. The analysis aims to reveal the contemporary discourse about Atatürk's reforms. In a wider approach, this thesis studies image of Turks as they were pictured in diplomatic reports and papers of interwar Czechoslovakia.
Imaginary Elsewhere: The "West" in Czechoslovakian society in the time of Perestroika
Andělová, Kristina ; Pullmann, Michal (advisor) ; Randák, Jan (referee)
In societies of state socialism the image of West was usually characterized by high degree of ambivalence. On the one hand the West was a space where negative social and politic phenomena could be displaced - as negative film should the official image of evil West full of social insecurity, criminality and poverty, reassured Czechoslovakian citizens of rightness of building socialism. On the other hand entirely opposite scenes were part of the public meaning- unconcealed admiration of fashion trends inspired by western mass culture (films, music). There was not only the fascination with consumer commodities of the western World, but also an admiration of lot of nonmaterial aspects (freedom of press, traveling, ecologic, feministic, pacifistic movements etc.). The West became gradually something mystical- it was at the same time "familiar and inaccessible, real and abstract, mundane and exotic". This ambivalence and inaccessibility was transforming the West in some mysterious and dreamlike place where instead of evil, the promise of happiness could be projected. Despite the official ideology and censoring attempts that limited the information about life behind the Iron Curtain, citizens in Czechoslovakia had an opportunity to create their own, quite clear image of West. At the same time I am trying to...
