Folklore in the mirror of individual and social interests (a case study of the Czech ethnologist František Pospíšil)

The paper demonstrates how the research aims and the interpretation of researched topics can be determined both by individual interests as well as by social context. František Pospíšil (1885–1958), a noted ethnologist from Brno, was one of the first Czech scholars who used a phonograph to record dialects and folk singing, and a film camera to research dance traditions.

František Pospíšil (1885–1958), a noted ethnologist from Brno, was one of the scholars whose research aims and interpretations of the topics which he studied were determined both by his individual interests as well as by social context. The paper attempts to demonstrate it. Pospíšil, who was interested in modern research methods (using phonograph, camera, and film camera) and was ambitious, stretched his research from his home region of Haná in Moravia to Native Americans (within his sword dance study and weapon dance study); his findings were quoted by many respected scholars of the period. Within the Czech environment, Pospíšil was one of the first scholars who used a phonograph to record folk singing; within the international context, Pospíšil was one of the first scholars who used a film camera to research dances. In fact, anything that Pospíšil did in the field of ethnology was unique; he covered a very broad range of themes and geographical areas, he also explored cultural phenomena which were on the margin of interest of others, and he employed an agile manager like approach. Due to some unfavourable historical circumstances, Pospíšil’s name was almost forgotten especially in the Czech context, and there is almost no mention of him in the texts on the history of Czech and Slovak folkloristics.

Ph.D. Thesis Abstract Piano Concerto in G Minor, op. 33, by Antonín Dvořák - Early and Final Version Critical Edition of the Score // Study about the Origin, the First Printing and the Performance Practice The dissertation is focused on the Concerto for Piano by Antonín Dvořák from 1876 - an outstanding composition not only in the Czech milieu but in all the European context as well - , which was a very long time condemned for its "unsuitable" piano part. The thesis summarizes all existing knowledge of the history of the origins and reception of the Dvořák's Piano Concerto, which is further verified on the basis of written contemporary sources (Dvořák's correspondence and contemporary press, sometimes yet unknown). Distorted and false pieces of information are corrected and supplemented with new findings (relating to the performances, interpreters, arrangements). Thanks to them, the author presents a new sight of the history of the reception of this composition from inception until the beginning of present century. For the first time all musical sources are examined in detail and relations between them studied (autograph with revisions between years 1876-1883, a copy of the score, which Leoš Janáček let made in 1878/9 and materials of the first printing J. Piano Pieces by Leoš Janáček nad Options of Their Interpretation

Résumé The bachelors' thesis The piano pieces by Leoš Janáček and options of their interpretation deals with the life, the style of composing and the music contribution of Leoš Janáček and with his piano pieces. The first part of the work occupies itself with Janáček's Moravian origin, his attitude to music, studies and his success and failure. The work shortly describes his family life because it influenced his oeuvre and credo very much. It summarizes the most important attributes of master's style and as for the piano pieces it gives instructions how to study the pieces as a performer. The second part concerns with the piano-only work. Each piece is being investigated, the options of their interpretation are being looked up and the problems of interpretation are being discovered. Solutions of them are being found on audio recordings by important Czech interprets of Janáček's work. The bachelors' thesis comes to the conclusion that Leoš Janáček was an original, singular composer of world stature. He was a unique person who was and up to the present time is in a class of his own. His work was a great asset to music world and life. Glagolitic Mass by Karel Douša

This bachelor thesis deals with the Glagolitic Mass by Karel Douša. Douša's composition is put into the context of contemporary compositional approach to the genre of the Glagolitic Mass and it is compared to other similar works of Douša's contemporaries. The thesis also contains Douša's brief biography and a list of his compositions. The work is completed by the enclosed compact disc with the first - and so far the only- recording of Douša's mass.
Věc Makropulos. From the idea to the performance

This thesis presents a complex of Janáček's opera The Makropulos Affair, covering its origin (and the genesis of opera in general), represents personality of Leoš Janáček from different perspectives and offers a didactic treatment of this theme. The work includes two layers - a theoretical and didactic. If we look at the text from a theoretical perspective, then here are about Janáček operas in terms of ideas, editing, production and inspiration of women. Further information on the general features of the libretto, practice, the role of stage manager, Janáček personality, his creative period, music and speech input field of prose to opera. Didactic point of view we see in the arrangement of this work and in quantities of information. The teacher can use the work as the basis for teaching, including the last chapter, which is dedicated only to the practical challenges and ideas. This thesis should help teachers, who want to focus on the opera or the personality of Leoš Janáček in the classroom.
Libretto versus drama based on the Čapek's Makropulos affair

We compare the features of drama and libretto, based on the text The Makropulos Affair by Karel Čapek (drama) and Leoš Janáček (libretto). We would like to show not only common dramatic features, but also the specific librettist features, which Janáček used by transformation Čapek's drama into opera libretto. We demonstrated, that dramatic features are in libretto at the level of structure and the specific librettist features are at the level of story, single figures and its constellation. The analysis confirmed the preliminary hypotheses.
Leoš Janáček " Glagolitic Mass

Works of Leoš Janáček were always very close to me. I grew up listening to them , when I was a child I listened to his operas many times in the Janáček Theatre, where my father worked for years. I was therefore very excited to delve myself into the work of the Glagolitic Mass, and I am also sure that it is very good material to write a thesis. In the main part of this work I´m going to focus on comparing different interpretive approaches, because we can interpret Janáček´sworks in many different ways and it is hard to determine which is the right one. Me as a native of Brno, i inclined to the "Brno" tradition of interpreting master´s works. I´m very curious about all the different interpretations, above all Sir Charles Mackerras, who is credited with promoting the Janáček music in the world.
Barriers and limits of research in ethnomusicology as evidenced in the recordings of the Working Committee for Czech National Folksong in Moravia and Silesia in 19019-1912

This contribution analyses particular situations occurring in the course of the phonographic recording by the Working Committee for Czech National Folksong in Moravia and Silesia headed by Leoš Janáček in cooperation with Hynek Bím and Františka Kyselková in the years 1909–1912. The purpose of the reflections is to give particular examples of limitations of the ethno-musicological research represented by various external and internal causes, and generalise barrier models characteristic for ethno-musicological research in the past.
