Mystification and intertextuality in drama Divadla Járy Cimrmana

1 Abstract In my diploma thesis I deal with the concept of the Jára Cimrman Theater. Using description and explanation, I examine the influence of mystification, fictional worlds, intertextuality, and special effects of the theater comicality up on its success and unwavering popularity among the audience. For this purpose, I work with audiovisual recordings and the book release of all theater plays by the Jára Cimrman Theater. In terms of theoretical research, I use bibliographic resources, among which are texts, articles, studies and publications by Lubomír Doležel, Umberto Eco and other authors whose works are relevant to the topic of my diploma thesis. In the diploma thesis I present an interpretation of theoretical knowledge, opinions, comments and reflections related to the chosen topic. The topic is a subject of broad professional discourse and is theoretically so complex that this diploma thesis cannot contain all the issues and contexts that apply to it. In this regard, I have tried to outline at least some of them and on their basis to elaborate the theme of this diploma thesis.

Theology and humor in the epic poem "Memorial Tragedy" by Augustin Doležal

This master thesis is concerned with biblical epic poem (or "epos") by Slovak author Augustin Dolezal, called Memorial Tragedy (1791, originally in Czech language). In this type of genre author takes well known biblical stories, such as fall of man or murder of Abel and adds his own fabricated circumstances. In this particular case author is trying to provide reader with catechesis and religious education on top the tale. Tragedy is mainly focused on the nature of sin and its connection to human condition, fall of man and possibility of evil in the world. Method of this paper is mainly theme analysis and comparison with Bible and its well known exegesis throughout the history. It is focused on comicality, which shall be defined in the theoretical part. Practical part attempts to come up with interpretation of the text in such a way, that certain themes, tropes or figures from the literary text are interconnected with certain features of comicality and shown as such. Same and different in The Turbine by K.M.Čapek-Chod and Man of Seven Sisters by J.Havlíček

Main aim of this diploma thesis is a comparison of K. M. Čapek-Chod's Turbina and The man of seven sisters by J. Havlíček with emphasis on comic in both works. Thesis is based on theoretical discourse about comic in general and on resulsts of existing evaluations of Turbina and The man of seven sisters. Comparison of the interpetation by itself, which is based on the comic in both works shows that comic is an integral part of both works and that both work express positively material bodily values of human life through the comic. Turbina does the work by showing invincibility of a man that resides in the immortality of mankind as a whole. The man of seven sisters nods in agreement to material bodily values by showing comical efforts to overcome this immortality of mankind.

Media transformations of Pepina Rejholsova

The work reflects one of the most popular fictional character of the first half of the 1930s, Pepina Rejholcová. Pepina Rejholcová, whose author Frantisek Voborsky, an important personality of Czech comics, has appeared in the Czech press at the turn of the 1920s and 1930s - first as a side character of humorous drawings or illustrations for popular song lyrics. Soon after, she reappeared on the silver screen, on pages of children's books, or in children's rooms in the form of toys and sweets. The transformations of the originally illustrated archetype caused by the switch among the various media are the center of interest for this work. In this context, the aspects of intermediality and transmediality are examined, both in special and general terms. It is mainly the extent to which the originally cartoon character changes, and whether the content of the message, the narrative patterns and the concept of humor is changing as well. In broader context, the work is a contribution to the theme of media and institutional integration. The work is divided into five parts and a conclusion. This Diploma thesis deals with the plays of the Divadlo Járy Cimrmana. I will use description and explanation to examine the influence of mystification, intertextuality and comicality on the success of this Prague theatre. Recordings of the Divadlo Járy Cimrmana performances and the book issues of their plays will be instrumental to this goal. The theory will be largely adopted from B. Brouk, V. Borecký, J. Homoláč, H. Bergeson and L. Dvorský.

Religion and Humour: Comical Layers in Old Norse Religious Texts and Their Relationship to the Offical Religion

This paper focuses on the comic layers in Eddic mythological poetry, namely in Lokasenna, Hárbarðsljóð and Ϸrymskviða, and on their relation to the Old Norse religion. In the past, these comic and seemingly blasphemic poems used to be interpreted as a display of criticism of the religious system or, due to the impossibility to date their origin, as a product of late decadent paganism or even as a Christian satire of this religion. This paper shows that such interpretations are not necessary, and that the comic Eddic poems could have existed as a functional part of the Old Norse religion. It points out the affinity of the categories of religious humour and chaos. Subsequently, it presents various theories, mostly from the field of anthropology of religion, which show that a temporarily confrontation of order with chaos can be a desirable practise for a religion, and that humour can serve as a suitable means to achieve such a confrontation. The second part of the paper focuses on the particular Eddic poems. It analyses in detail their comic layers, and examines the possibilities of their function within the Old Norse religion on the background of the notion of piety and blasphemy in their time. The Style of Arnošt Goldflam's Plays

This thesis presents Arnošt Goldflam as playwright with a peculiar position in the Czech culture. It summarizes basic knowledge about nature and style of dramatic texts and, on the basic of this knowledge, deals with stylistic and linguistic analysis of the part of the author's works which are original dramatic texts. It's based on the corpus of twelve games, that represent this kind of his creative work from the 80's until recently. The objective of the thesis is to determine the basic characteristics and language instruments involved in the structure and meaning of each game. Based on the analysis of instruments stylish construction of various levels and areas of language it defines the most significant common features stylish of all included texts and also author's progression in the use of language and style formation. Goldflam's theater work is characterized not only by choosing subjects, but also in the way of their language and staging interpretation. Boundaries of Humour

This paper examines the phenomenon of controversial humor on the social networking site Facebook. Here there exist several entertainment pages, dedicated to the purpose of publishing and sharing comic material; most notably jokes in the form of humorous images. Sometimes, some of these jokes become a source of conflicts and a target of criticism by certain Facebook users, who consider them unacceptable. The present study therefore aims at examining the characteristics of these jokes, to help shed light on what is today considered inappropriate in the sphere of humor. For this purpose, an analysis of jokes and comments on them, left by their readers, was conducted on several Facebook pages. This research revealed the fact that jokes about current, medially covered disasters where the biggest source of controversies. Further inquiries into their nature then showed that aversion to this type of humor cannot be explained by applying superiority theory (contrary to certain other types of humor; for example ethnic or sexist jokes). The source of conflicts about disaster jokes is therefore seen in the clash of disparate views, held by Facebook users about the nature of norms, governing what is and what isn't acceptable to joke about.
