Comparison of the Polish translation of the novel "Konec punku v Helsinkách" with the original Czech version

ŠEMBEROVÁ, DARIA. Comparison of the Polish translation of the novel "Konec punku v Helsinkách" with the original Czech version. Praha: Charles University. Faculty of Arts, 2015. The thesis deals with the issue of translatability of colloquial Czech elements and lexical Germanisms into the Polish language using the comparison of the novel Konec punku v Helsinkách by Jaroslav Rudiš and its Polish translation. The theoretical part briefly discusses the literary work of Jaroslav Rudiš, stratification of Czech and Polish national language, colloquial Czech and its use in literature and literary translation, lexical Germanisms in Czech as well as basic issues of translation of literary works. The practical part of the thesis deals with a critical analysis of the Polish translation of the novel by Jaroslav Rudiš regarding the mentioned aspects. Standard Language with Regard to Teaching Czech as a Foreign Language

The dissertation analyses the stratification of Czech in terms of teaching Czech as a foreign language. The general theoretical part relates to teaching Czech as a foreign language or other foreign languages as close as possible. This part also includes the analysis of recordings of authentic communication between Czech speakers and foreigners. The findings of the analysis are subsequently applied to the sample plans of teaching units. The introductory part deals with the history and development of the theory of the standard Czech language and it also presents the attitudes held by the members of the Prague Linguistic Circle, which were published in Spisovná čeština a jazyková kultura (Czech Literary Language and Culture) in 1932. The theoretical part reflects the issue of defining the standard, mentions diglossia and presents a variety of contemporary opinions on future trends in the development of codification. In accordance with its aim, the paper lists the recommendations of benchmark descriptions for Czech as a foreign language and also describes so called Foreigner Talk, including the way foreigners are spoken to by the speakers of Czech. Furthermore, the extent to which spoken Czech is reflected upon in the instruction of Czech language for foreigners and/or teaching materials were studied....

Tanslation and stylistic analysis of five chapters of the novel Swimming by Nicola Keegan

This BA thesis consists of two parts. The first comprises my translation of five chapters of Nicola Keegan's novel debut Swimming. The second part, analytical one, contains two sections. One deals with the choice and description of the target language register of this translation and the other one with the stylistic analysis of the translation and the justification of the vocabulary used. The analytical part is based largely on the translational theories of Dagmar Knittlová and especially Jiří Levý.

Czech of Slovak Speakers

Bachelor thesis Czech of Slovak speakers analyzes written texts of two native Slovak speakers in the Czech language on the basis of knowledge of language transfer, semicommunication and typology of linguistic errors. The first part is devoted to theoretical definition of the problem. The second part contains brief biographies of both participants, including the method of acquisition of Czech and its use, and delivers the results of error analysis of texts. Based on the review of the literature and the obtained data categories of errors occurring in Czech of Slovak speakers are created. The thesis provides an overview of anticipated and other errors in the texts of both speakers compared the incidence and description of selected problematic phenomena.

Standard and non-standard language in printed media communication and its impact on discussions about standard language

The present Master's thesis analyses language means in printed media with a particular focus on national daily newspapers from the second trimester of 1993. That year, there was an important linguistic conference on standardised Czech and language culture. The analysis examines especially language means that deviate from the standardised norm of the language. The theoretical part discusses key concepts, such as norm and codification or national language and its varieties. The understanding of these terms is critical for the analytical part of the thesis where language means used in printed media are being analysed using quantitative content analysis. The aim of this analysis is to describe their motivation of use and function. The results are then compared with the proceedings of the 1993 conference on standardised Czech and language culture held in Olomouc. The thesis provides a clear view on how the occurrence of non-standardised language means in media influences academic discussion on standardised Czech.
