Public appearances of unofficial rock bands in Prague between 1973-1984
Razím, Tomáš ; Houda, Přemysl (advisor) ; Diestler, Radek (referee)
This thesis deals with the issue of public appearances of amateur rock bands in Prague after the introduction of the so-called "requlifications" which basically destroyed professional rock music in Czechoslovakia. This affected especially the capital city which had witnessed an unprecedented rise of this genre only several years earlier. Thereafter, independent rock music could be practiced only as a hobby, and even the amateur musicians had to face extensive regulations and general mistrust. As a result, opportunities to appear in public were very sparse because organizers were worried about the consequences of such events. The research investigates the mechanisms and conditions for durable opportunities to play publicly in Prague before 1984. The effects of the article Nová vlna se starým obsahem - the pinnacle of the media and social campaign against new forms of rock music, were already becoming apparent in that year and the Union of musicians and its sections - main pillars of independent culture in Czechoslovakia - were dissolved. The conclusion is that in such difficult circumstances persistence, creativity and readiness to lose one's job proved crucial qualities. They enabled people to overcome not only the regulations but mainly the concerns about sanctions for nonconformist appearance and...
Foreign Students in Czechoslovakia from 1960s and 1970s: Social Life and Relations to the Czechoslovak Population
Medvecová, Mária ; Pullmann, Michal (advisor) ; Cajthaml, Petr (referee)
This work focuses on foreign college students in former Czechoslovakia, coming from so-called developing countries. It portrays the students' daily life, their relationships and conflicts, as well as their coexistence alongside the Czechoslovak population. Firstly, it will be necessary for us to pinpoint the subjects the foreigners studied, and then identify university archives used as research sources (tentatively, sources are available from Charles University and the Universita 17. listopadu university in Prague). Besides their studies, this work focuses on the students' life at the dormitories, their conflicts, and their cultural and social life. The research will, naturally, have to be put into context of Czechoslovakia's strategies and ambitions in the international politics, especially in relation to the so- called developing countries. Chrpa, Jiří ; Kučera, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Tůma, Oldřich (referee)
This B.A. thesis called "The reaction of the Czechoslovak and East German leadership on the crisis of the 1980s" deals with the situation in Czechoslovakia and the GDR, two countries similar in many of their characteristics, in the period of 1985-1989, when these communist regimes were facing a crisis caused by a complex of economic, social and political reasons. Firstly the main three fields in which the problems of both regimes manifested are defined - economic difficulties, relation between the leadership and the society and the crisis of elites. The thesis deals also with external impacts affecting those countries, which include particularly the changes in the USSR after the emergence of Michail Sergejevich Gorbachev. Further it decribes the form of the reaction on the effects of the crisis and the measures taken in this context. While there occured limited reforms, concerning especially the economy, inspired by the Soviet perestroika for the first time in 1987 in Czechoslovakia, the reaction of the GDR mainly consisted of maintaining the current course and of the effort to gain financial resources to keep living standards. A major problem for both regimes in addition to the economic stagnation and the need to respond to the change of the course of the Soviet policy was as well the activisation...

Procházková, Lenka ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Vilímek, Tomáš (referee)
Bachelor thesis Opposition in the GDR and its Connection to the Czech Dissent. Mutual Contacts at the Turn of 1970s and 1980s offers a new point of view on the oppositional movement in the German Democratic Republic (GDR) at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s, as it is based on the comparison with the oppositional movement in Czechoslovakian Socialistic Republic (CSSR). The work concentrates on the contacts between the representatives of the opposition from both countries and on the possible topics of their cross-border cooperation in the period between the Final Act of the Conference of Security and Cooperation in Europe in 1975 and the election of Mikhail Gorbachev as the leader of the Soviet Union in 1985. Although the traditions of the East German oppositional movement were different to the traditions of the opposition in the CSSR, there were intensive contacts between both groups (usually individual) at the turn of the 1970s and 1980s. One of the crucial topics of the East German oppositional movement was the question of peace. The space for moulding of the independent peace movement (and later also for other civic initiatives) was created under the protection of the East German protestant church, which was the only institution that was independent from the state structures. There was no such...

Drobný, Adam ; Stellner, František (advisor) ; Szobi, Pavel (referee)
In the second half of 20th century, Europe was recovering from world wars and it looked like everything bad is behind us. But it wasn't the case of Eastern Europe states, which became the soviet satellite states. In USSR, there were tough life conditions - not only lack of freedom, censorship etc., but at the end of 70s there were raising economic problems. The "dark age" started, which has been ended by Mikhail Sergeyevich Gorbachev. This paper focuses on reaction of Czechoslovak leadership to Gorbachev and his policy. The purpose is to analyze the attitude of Czechoslovak leadership to the new economic reforms.
