Giovanni Manzuoli and his vocal profile of the 1760s

The bachelor thesis deals with the personality of Giovanni Manzuoli (1720-1782), the singing castrato. The thesis summarises the present knowledge and reconstructs his singing career on the basis of his known opera performances. The text focuses on the last decade of Manzuoli's artistic career which offers the richest source base for interpretation, including commentaries about performances and records of the amount of the honorarium. The fundamental part of the thesis is a repertoire analysis which had been composed bespoke for Manzuoli. Selected arias from 1760s are analysed mainly through the prism of singing technique and interpretation of that time. The result of this analysis is an outline of Manzuoli's vocal profile. DOMINIQUE VIVANT DENON - FROM TRAVELS IN ITALY TO THE LOUVRE MUSEUM. TOWARD A TYPOLOGY OF THE 18TH CENTURY TRAVELOGUE. Number of characters: 121 846 (68 pages) The present thesis, Dominique Vivant Denon - From travels in Italy to the Louvre Museum is divided into two parts. The first one is a monograph on baron Vivant Denon, an important figure of the cultural life in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries, the author of Point de Lendemain, two travelogues, Voyage dans la Basse et la Haute Égypte and Voyage en Sicile, but, primarily, Napoleon's advisor in the field of fine art and the first director of The Louvre. The introductory pages of the thesis deal with the reception of Denon's works. There is a certain flux in the perception of Denon's oeuvre which has given rise to a range of interesting issues. One of them, the popularity of the libertine culture of pre-revolutionary France in the second half of the twentieth century, accounts for the fact that the novella Point de Lendemain is today the best known piece among Denon's extensive and multifaceted writings. Giuseppe Sarti's Operatic Arias in Prague Collections

This bachelor thesis deals with the occurence of operatic arias of Italian composer Giuseppe Sarti in Prague. The starting point of this work is research of the archive resources of the basic Prague institutions and consequential creating of the list of all available sources. On this basis three most numerous arias are chosen and they are farther remited to musical and textual analyse. Thanks to this analysis it is possible to get closer to Sarti's way of musical composition, in general then to gain evidences of Italina opera during the Classic period. Moreover this analysis provide an opportunity for better understanding of musical conventions and taste in Bohemia in late 18th century. Antonín Koniáš: life and work

Antonín Koniáš life and work This thesis is showing Antonín Koniáš as one of the personalities of Czech baroq recatholization process. It introduces Koniáš from three different angles of view: as a personality, as an author of indexes of banned literature and as a mythical figure. Koniáš's perception and opinions about books is accentuated in the thesis as well as Koniáš's impact on book culture on Czech territory. Koniáš is depicted as a missionary, preacher and writer. Based on Koniáš's Indexes and a study of expert literature, the thesis highlights his views and opinions. The thesis also compares two editions of Indexes and indicates the differences between them. The thesis also summarizes a knowledge about myths concerning Koniáš, shortly introduces his first biographers and tries to estimate the number of books which Koniáš burned during his missions.
The Travel Report by Kaspar von Sternber (1786-1787), especially because of the Aspects of the Textlinguistics

The presented thesis deals with the historic-linguistic analysis of private travelogues of Kašpar Šternberk that were arosen in the years 1786 and 1787. Historical part is dedicated to the family of Sternberk, the life of Caspar Sternberg and political, social, cultural and linguistic development in 18th century. The textological part is oriented on syntactic - stylistic and lexical analysis of the text. According to the research, in the travelogues that is written as diary, the paratactic phrase exceeds hypotactic phrase. Hypotactic phrase consists mainly of the subordinate declarative clauses. Due to these results, the finitum was found mostly on the second and last place in a sentence. With few exceptions the position of finitum was strictly kept as well as sentence frame. By the research of the lexical analysis there was found out that in the diaries the words coming from Latin, Greek, French and Italian occur. There are mainly the expressions connected with architecture, science and art.
Salieri's Axur Re d'Ormus in Prague 1788

The master thesis deals with the Antonio Salieri's opera Axur, Re d'Ormus and its premiere in 1788 at Nostitz Theatre in Prague. First part of thesis represents source research. On the basis of printed librettos, playbills and periodicals we can observe presence of Salieri's operas in repertory of Prague theaters from 1773 to 1806. Main part of thesis constitute musical and dramatic analysis of Salieri's Axur. This analysis is focused to Prague "version", which represents printed libretto. Musical and textual sources, used in analysis, was furthermore properly investigated. Through mutual comparison was suggested stemma, indicated to relations between these sources and simultaneously to processes, proceeded during transfer of work between particular theaters. I pay attention especially to axis Vienna-Prague-Dresden in period 1788-1789.
Slave Narratives as a variation on motivational self-help books

This thesis aims to examine the representative of classic Enlightenment self-help text, Benjamin Franklin's Way to Wealth, and two representatives of the slave narrative genre, Frederick Douglass's and Olaudah Equiano's works, in terms of their possible affinity. The thesis compares and contrasts the individual texts and seeks to find analogies in structure and content which would indicate the influence of the self-help genre in American literature on the narratives and demonstrate the presence of the self-improvement element in the reading of slave narratives. The thesis consists of two key parts, the theoretical introduction onto the issues and practical part which analyses the texts themselves. F. V. Habermann: Philomela pia, sive missae sex

This bachelor thesis deals with the mass cycle Philomela pia by František Václav Habermann (1706-1783), a composer being nowadays mentioned primarily in connection with G. F. Handel, who used some of Habermann's music fragments in his own works. The paper summarizes the present knowledge of Habermann's biography and works, listing all the source materials of this mass cycle as well, but the central focus is on two analytical chapters. The first of them attempts to cover the basic parameters of Habermann's masses and puts them to the Central European as well as Italian musical context, the second one contains a detailed study of the technique and the extent of Handel's reworkings of Habermann's music, together with a comparison of the compositional techniques of both composers.
