Spio, Queenie Bessie
This study investigates the causes of extreme poverty among women within the Yendi district in the northern region of Ghana. The study adopted the mixed research and therefore meaning that the study employed both quantitative and qualitative methods. The mixed method research was used because it focused on the positives and strengths of both quantitative and qualitative methods and by so doing, enabling the study to have in-depth appreciation and understanding of the factors causing extreme poverty among women in the Yendi district. The poor women of Yendi as well as selected officials constituted the target population for this study. Data was collected from 150 participants using simple random technique. The purposive sampling technique was used in collecting data from the Municipal Development Officer and one Assembly member. With respect to the first objective, it was found that main factors causing extreme poverty among the participants are traditional practices that frown on women owning assets and properties, low education and therefore lacking the skills and capabilities to be employed, lack of access to resources and opportunities, inadequate access to credit facilities and poor access to quality health and limited health care facilities. In relation to the second objective of determining the effects of poverty on the livelihood of Yendi women, it was found that poverty among the participant’s results in the inability to educate children (high illiteracy rate), inability to attend to the hospital when sick, low life expectancy etc, inadequate access to social amenities such as good drinking water, health care and security, being excluded from society and not having a say in family decisions, low income levels and hunger and malnourished children, high infant mortality. In relation to the third objective, it was found that the efforts being made by women to reduce their poverty situations include seeking assistance from family members and friends, buying food stuffs on credit, borrowing from money lenders to start a business, withdrawing children from school and not attending the hospital when sick. Recommendations made to reduce extreme poverty included making sure that policies makers, municipal assemblies, opinion leaders and religious heads all work together to change the practice of denying women the right to own properties; that the women of Yendi should be encouraged to enroll in adult education programmes which will not only teach the women how to read and right, but also equip them with live skills that will enable them start earning decent income to support themselves and their households. Other recommendations include the central government focusing more on developing purposive developmental and poverty alleviation projects and strategies; insisting on a more geographical balance when it comes to the allocation of resources and development projects. It was in addition recommended that the women should use family planning methods since it will ensure that the women have the number of children they believe they are capable of taking care of and in the process, reduce extreme poverty.

The role of women in the society of Rwanda
Tsoy, Yana
The objective of this thesis is to analyze how certain factors, such as education, ethnicity, and economic situation influence the role of women in the society of Rwanda. The author uses secondary data, such as academic articles, books, publications of international institutions, NGOs and governmental reports, and other publications. Relevant statistics from the National Institute of Statistics of Rwanda, Freedom House, and World Bank will be analyzed in order to find out the factors that influence the role of women in the society in Rwanda. Charts and tables will be used to further describe and explain certain issues. Relevant reports of Human Rights Watch and the United Nations Development Program will be included among other relevant sources. The study revealed that the level of economic and social development of Rwanda is one of the main factors that significantly affect the role of women in society, especially in relation to education and its availability for women, women's economic autonomy, and women's ability to obtain well-paid jobs. However, the economic and social development of Rwanda also stems from the poor situation in agriculture, which is the main livelihood of the majority of Rwandan women. It is also dependent on a shortage of land, which is caused by the high population density, which was found out by the analysis of qualitative and quantitative data. Based on my research, I believe that there are three hidden dangers in Rwandan society. Firstly, behind gender equality lies the strong ethnic identity, favoring an elite group at the expense of the majority of ordinary women and citizens, which may fuel the growing dissatisfaction and danger of ethnic conflict in the future. Secondly, patriarchy is still intertwined within society, and policies support it, and often worsen the situation of women. Thirdly, the policies of gender equality are only to gain the legitimacy of the government, so it is about meeting statistics and requirements of donors whose financial assistance is vital. Rwanda is an exceptional country full of contrasts that deserves further examination to analyze whether, in the longer term, the increased representation of women in politics could lead to the improved role of women in Rwanda.
Assessing the barriers in promoting women empowerment to achieve gender equality in Ghana
Kwabi, Cynthia Mina Ama Afro
Gender equality will become a reality when all genders are equally recognized, treated fairly, and given the same opportunities to participate in all activities to ensure quality life. Despite the efforts to tackle gender inequality, women's rights remain a critical issue throughout the globe. Statistics gathered in the 21st century are sobering and indicate gender inequality is still prevalent worldwide. The research investigates the barriers to promoting women's empowerment in Ghana with shreds of evidence of cultural, economic, educational, and political barriers that predispose them to enjoy equal rights and opportunities as their male counterparts. Primary data was used for the study, which was collected using a well-structured electronic questionnaire. A purposive sampling technique was adopted for the selection of respondents. The sample size was 200 (122 females and 78 males). Respondents evaluated the degree to which they support or disagree on the barriers affecting women empowerment in Ghana using a Likert scale. Furthermore, a t-test was applied to test the research hypothesis at a 5% (α=0.05) Level of Significance (LOS) to assess both males' and females' perceptions on the barriers that affect women empowerment in Ghana. The barriers assessed were evaluated using descriptive statistics; mean and standard deviation to examine the responses received with a decision point of 2.5, which ranked responses according to the mean score attained for economic, educational, political, and cultural barriers. Overall, the highest average score gained included; the cultural practices that define women roles to perform solely domestic activities (score 3.51), poor health as a result of complications from pregnancy, childbirth and diseases such as HIV/AIDS due to fragile health care systems (score 3.41), and limited access to credit facilities due to lack of collateral and inadequate savings to support women (score 3.4). This shows the social structure that prevails since ancient times affect women from the individual, societal, and organizational levels, that deny women equal opportunities as men. The t-test confirmed no significant difference in both males and females' perception of the barriers that affect women empowerment in Ghana. The study recommends education, restructuring, re-evaluating existing policies, and advocating for women to be provided leadership positions and governance representation. This will empower women and progressively ensure gender equality.
