Community housing in Brno-Komín
Špačková, Adéla ; Pekár, Pavel (referee) ; Novák, Antonín (advisor)
The subject of this master's thesis is the architectural project of community housing in the spirit of baugruppe. The project builds upon the work from the previous semester, which focused on the urban solution of the given location. The site is located on Řezáčova Street in the northeastern part of the municipal district Brno-Komín, situated in the northwest of the statutory city of Brno. It is a former area of gardens, which is currently falling into disrepair. The area is designated as a building reserve with a predominant residential function. The new residential complex provides quality housing, work opportunities, and the possibility of leisure activities. The construction of a new access road and the revitalization of deteriorating surrounding areas, where a pleasant park and playgrounds will be created. The main concept is to create a new form of housing in the form of four structures. The buildings are situated on a grid of 6x6 meters, precisely placed irregularly on the site with gradually added or subtracted masses. This creates regular corners for the main entrances to individual buildings, terraces with pergolas, gardens, or space for wild vegetation. The masses decrease gradually towards the southern slope, enhancing the natural sunlight penetration into less illuminated residential units. The development is divided into northern and southern blocks, each with an individual courtyard for the residents of the respective buildings. At the heart of these two blocks, a small square with an active ground floor serving for social events (markets, outdoor cinema, Christmas tree, theater, concerts, etc.) and gatherings of residents and passersby is created. The designed building consists of five mutually shifted volumes with a flat roof and a setback top floor with rooftop terraces. It is four stories tall. The first underground floor contains garages, cellars, and technical facilities, the first above-ground floor has a mixed function (residential, community, and public spaces), and the second, third, and fourth floors are residential. The building comprises a total of 26 residential units of various layouts, from 1+kk to 4+kk. The basic dominant feature of the entire visual style of the building is a regular grid, which divides the building into horizontal and vertical units, giving the facade a regular order. These protruding elements at column and beam locations are clad with massive wooden panels oriented along the longitudinal axis of the respective structural element. 3 Conversely, recessed infills are composed of vertical wooden slats, window openings, or terraces with planted climbing vegetation. Special emphasis is placed on the harmonious relationship with the surrounding natural environment in the design of the apartment building. This synergy is achieved through a series of architectural elements that respect the natural context while cultivating the relationship between the building and nature. Green roofs, planters with climbing vegetation on facades, and the courtyard space reflecting the green environment represent key strategies that support this integration. Green roofs, besides their aesthetic value, function as biodiversity zones, providing habitat for local fauna and flora. Planters with climbing greenery on facades contribute to the bioclimatic properties of the building, regulating temperature and reducing energy consumption, while also accentuating the organic character of the space.
Center for seniors in Brno-Medlánky
Minarčíková, Barbora ; Klimecký, Martin (referee) ; Gerö, Jiří (advisor)
The task of the diploma thesis is to design a senior living facility in Brno – Medlánky. This task was preceded by a pre-diploma project within the subject NGA056 – Specialized project, developed in the previous semester, which consisted of preparing an urban study with a proposal for urban structure including transportation solutions and the placement of various functions - residential areas, commercial areas, public buildings, civic amenities, a sports hall, a church, and further development of the senior living facility. The architectural study focuses on creating a suitable environment for long-term stay for seniors, meaning comfortable living, outdoor relaxation areas, adequate technical infrastructure, and a variety of services. The design stems from the concept of a compact, clear, and barrier-free base space with social areas and facilities connecting three pavilions of housing units. This ensures privacy in the housing units while providing ample space for social interaction. Access to the terrain linked with a park located on the southern side of the plot is easy from both the base floor and the housing units, providing direct contact with greenery in outdoor spaces. The main entrance leading to the base on the first floor is designed with a representative atrium, reflecting the grandeur of the entire complex. Technical and operational facilities are expanded to cover the capacity of a potential additional fourth pavilion. The entire complex reflects the requirement for peaceful and high-standard living in old age, respecting contemporary architecture and the needs of today's population. As a result, it becomes a place for contented aging.

The web application is intended to serve not only the citizens of the city Brno, but also to the staff of the transport department for better understanding and more efficient transport planning. The application is implemented using the FastAPI framework and the React library. In cooperation with the staff of the transport department, the application has been tested by real users. The results of this work are a web application that allows users to analyze traffic on selected streets and routes and better understand and define the most critical sections for traffic in the city of Brno, with the potential to expand to other cities.
NetZero – carbon neutral living in Brno
Dubanych, Yuliia ; Gebauer, Pavel (referee) ; Sedláček, Michal (advisor)
The urban design of the area is a reaction to the spatial study prepared for the West Gate development location in Brno, which is surrounded by buildings of dominant importance: Bohunice University Hospital, Campus Square, Masaryk University faculties. The given location is unique in that it is one of the few in Brno where buildings can be placed high up, so in my proposal I actively work with the elevation level of the building. The height dominants are situated on the edges of the territory due to the course of the take-off corridor, but I also balance the overall composition of the territory with my position. The architectural solution of the proposed building responds to the urban structure and height of the buildings in the immediate vicinity. The parterre of the building respects the course of the original terrain, which is why the plinth is partially embedded with its mass underground. Operationally, the building is designed as accommodation for students with sales areas on the ground floor, which functionally complement the overall operation of the building. However, the building also has other services such as student coworking, which should primarily serve to gather a larger number of students for joint work or rest. Of course, the operation of the building is complemented by a functional public space, which it encloses with its shape.
Townhouse
Baková, Erika ; Smola, Jaroslav (referee) ; Ležatka, Lukáš (advisor)
This master's thesis focuses on a complex architectural and urban design of a multifunctional urban block in the historic center of Brno at the level of architectural study. The project aims to harmoniously integrate new buildings into the historical context of the city and respect the surrounding urban fabric. The proposal addresses the completion of an existing urban block and the creation of a new urban block between Veveří and Kounicova streets, thus creating a new Závodní street. The design preserves a memorial tree as a key element of the public space; the facade of the building steps away from it, creating a public space of a piazzetta with the memorial tree as the focal point. As part of the blue-green infrastructure, new greenery is integrated into the streets, and buildings with flat roofs have vegetated roofs with photovoltaic panels designed. The architectural solution includes two underground floors for parking, a ground floor with an active commercial ground floor with shops and a supermarket, and five above-ground floors with residential units. The last above-ground floor is set back from the rest. The urban design focuses on slowing down busy traffic and puts pedestrians in a dominant position. The architectural design respects the character of the area and combines traditional forms with a modern appearance. The structural solution of the building combines a reinforced concrete skelet system with a ceramic wall system. The project exploits the potential of land use and brings up to 399 new residential units ranging from 1+kk to 4+kk, with higher standard apartments on the last setback above-ground floor.
Advanced visualisation tool for cycling traffic intensity in Brno
Šerejch, Radek ; Hynek, Jiří (referee) ; Lazúr, Juraj (advisor)
Due to the continuously growing trend of cycling transportation, there arises a need to analyze cycling transportation. The data portal of the city of Brno provides data that can be utilized in various ways. However, the records in these datasets use different underlying maps. This problem is addressed by Radoslav Eliáš in his master’s thesis, where he creates a connected data model using algorithms. For visualizing this data, he uses the ArcGIS application, which, however, is not sufficiently flexible for easy creation of advanced visualizations. Therefore, in this thesis, an application is proposed and implemented to replace the existing method of visualization. For simple data preprocessing, the application is divided into a backend and frontend part. The backend part handles data preprocessing, which is subsequently provided through an API. The frontend part consists of a web application that handles all graph and visualization creation. The implemented solution brings broader possibilities for analyzing data and also facilitates responding to changes in the datasets.
NetZero – carbon neutral living in Brno
Dudáš, Matúš ; Gebauer, Pavel (referee) ; Sedláček, Michal (advisor)
The topic of the diploma thesis is the design of an architectural study for two apartment buildings, which follows a previous urban study. The main goal of the diploma thesis is to design buildings with minimal carbon footprint throughout their entire life cycle, achieving a so-called NetZero state. The new district is designed urbanistically and functionally to provide residents with all necessary services while maintaining good connections with public transportation, thereby reducing the need for individual car transportation solutions. The area in question is located in Brno, in the Starý Lískovec locality, near the new tram stop Západná brána. It is an unused plot of land, bordered to the south by urban structures and to the north by administrative spaces including OC Campus Square, the University Campus Bohunice, and the Faculty Hospital Brno. To the east of the plot, there are planned construction projects focused on housing. The material composition of the apartment buildings combines low-carbon concrete and prefabricated CLT panels, supporting the sustainability of the buildings and the efficiency of construction. This hybrid approach minimizes CO2 emissions while providing the necessary strength and durability of the structures. CLT panels are a more environmentally friendly alternative to traditional building materials and allow for faster construction. Both apartment buildings have similar operations. The underground level is designed with parking spaces for the apartment owners. On the ground floor, there is a parterre with smaller shops, a café, and a bar with outdoor seating between the new buildings. The upper floors house various types and sizes of residential units. The top floors feature duplex apartments with terraces and views.
Townhouse
Palata, Jiří ; Dokoupilová Pazderková, Kateřina (referee) ; Ležatka, Lukáš (advisor)
The subject of the diploma thesis is the design of a set of town houses within the Veveří, Pekárenská, Kounicova and Závodní blocks in Brno. The town house represents a historical archetype that represents the ideal functional composition of the building within the compact structure of the development in the wider center of Brno. The polyfunctionality of individual houses consists of a vertical functional division, where the ground floor is usually home to commercial units intended for catering, trade, administration or small production. Urban blocks, by their closure, firmly define the boundary between private and public. Public space is fairly dedicated to all. The non-public inner block is dedicated only to residents, which provides a rare added value with its functional content from recreational sports, relaxation, gardening. Some apartments are also oriented towards the inner block, which have direct contact between the interior and the exterior. On the higher floors, access to the exterior is ensured by means of loggias, balconies and terraces of stepped floors. Part of the inner block is dedicated to a single-storey supermarket, the capacity of which follows on from the existing operation. The roof of the supermarket is a connected part of the terrain of the inner block. On the roof there is a recreational multifunctional playground, an active sports area, a terrace connected to the community hall and a community sauna. All sections have access to a shared courtyard for residents. The underground parking is situated on two floors, separated from the parking for residents and visitors to the supermarket and other commercial units. The character and spatial solution of the objects is based on knowledge of the place and the surrounding objects, which are located in the city's heritage zone on the near border of the Brno city heritage reserve. The building thus brings a new architectural layer to the place with respect for its surroundings. The building is divided by urban-architectural details, such as stepped floors, accented corners, risality, gabled roof gables, vertical material solution of the facade or the same rectangular format of vertical window openings. However, the architectural solution inspired by history is dressed in a contemporary coat, which ensures the careful use of energy, rainwater management, the support of biodiversity and, with its positive approach to the human scale, the support of social sustainability. Vegetation areas for rainwater management are located not only on roofs, but also on facades, specifically on railings, which are the subject of a separate architectural detail solution. In addition to individual town houses, the proposal also includes the creation of the structure and character of public spaces. In particular, the character of the city street Veveří is strengthened, the new Závodní street is created and the character of the existing service streets is adjusted, in which the pedestrian is favored over the driver, and adequate traffic calming solutions were chosen with the aim of supporting mobility by public transport. Professor Chudoba's memorial tree is the centerpiece of the new important public space, with its parameters of a patch. A majestic tree closes the interior of this space and creates an ideal environment for meetings with the possibility of a longer stay thanks to the situated catering facilities.
