Media framing of immigration in the United Kingdom: a critical discourse analysis of newspaper coverage of the Windrush scandal between 2018 and 2020
Khannolainen, Daria ; Rodón, Toni (vedoucí práce) ; Broad, Matthew (oponent)
Immigration has historically been a major political issue in the United Kingdom. Older migration waves, dating back to the mid-20th century, have become the subject of news coverage again in the last five years following the Windrush scandal. The present research focuses on the coverage of the events surrounding the Windrush scandal in the United Kingdom in 2018-2020 and how the media's political leanings impacted the framing of Commonwealth immigration. The data sources include the media's online platforms and third-party newspaper archives within the six chosen media among three subgroups (right-wing/Conservative, left-wing/Labour, and centrist). The research applied a critical discourse analysis approach to the texts of the newsprint media covering the issue. It was found that there is considerable variation in immigration coverage and the presentation of the government's response to the Windrush scandal between differently ideologically aligned newspapers. The right-leaning media were the most negative in framing non-Commonwealth immigration and the least critical of the government's response to the scandal, whereas the left-leaning and centrist newspapers showed the opposite tendencies. This study contributes to the scholarship on migration framing by media in the context of a political scandal.
Greece and Portugal's re-orientation towards China after the sovereign debt crisis
Groenewoud, Suzanne Maria ; Segura, Caterina García (vedoucí práce) ; Broad, Matthew (oponent)
During the sovereign debt crisis, the EU imposed stringent measures that had severe economic and political consequences for peripheral countries such as Greece, Spain, Portugal, and Italy. This master's thesis examines the Greek and Portuguese economic situation during the crisis and how they increasingly sought cooperation alternatives outside the EU, focusing on China. The research contributes to the largely unexplored literature on the European member states' rationale behind their rapprochement with China. In order to answer the question, "Under what conditions were EU members states more likely to change their economic and political relationship with China and how it has changed their behaviour towards the EU?", this study employs a qualitative comparative research design of foreign policy analysis. The main preliminary findings demonstrate how changing Greek domestic politics interacted with growing antipathy towards the EU, leading in expressions of foreign policy de-Europeanisation and increased cooperation with China. Portugal also increased its cooperation with China, but its opposition to the EU is more moderate. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
The Irish Lisbon Treaty Referendums 2008 and 2009: Which themes were present in the debate?
Powell, Maximilian ; Broad, Matthew (vedoucí práce) ; Šlosarčík, Ivo (oponent)
The overall aim of this research is to explore the themes debated during both Irish Lisbon Treaty referendums. As the literature will expose, much has been written on the reasons why the result moved so emphatically from a 'no' to a 'yes' vote. We know that the referendums had different results, however, we may have lost sight of the campaigns themselves and the public discussions as independent phenomena. As this thesis will demonstrate, EU integration is not an easy phenomenon to describe, with citizens often feeling no direct interaction with the EU institutions. National politicians and the media, therefore, serve as mediators and have an important role in helping citizens to make sense of European integration. It is therefore worthwhile analysing the key themes that arose during both Irish referendums within the context of Irish political and economic concerns of the time, and investigating how issues of European integration were framed by the 'yes' and 'no' campaigns and reflected in the broadsheet media to achieve cut through to Irish citizens. Balancing the Good and the Bad of the EU-Led Liberalisation of the Public Sector
Sansom, Ruben ; Vukov, Visnja (vedoucí práce) ; Broad, Matthew (oponent)
Liberalisation is being implemented in an increasing number of formerly public sectors in European countries, often at the initiative of the European Union. The existing literature effectively highlights both the advantages and disadvantages of liberalisation for the development of these sectors, but stops short of weighing up these positive and negative impacts or analysing how different conditions - such as the level and form of liberalisation implemented and the level of development of the sector in which liberalisation is carried out - influence this balance. This paper constitutes the first step in this direction through its analysis of the case of cross-border passenger railway services. On one hand, one would expect liberalisation to positively impact the development of cross-border passenger railway services through its creation of cross-border markets. On the other hand, however, based on the perceived lowering of the quality of services provided by sectors which undergo liberalisation, one would expect it to result in their deterioration. The paper finds that overall, liberalisation's positive impact outweighs its negative impact in the case of cross-border passenger railway services, as in general it positively influences their development. This applies to all levels and forms of liberalisation....
Negotiations between the EU and Mercosur: motivations behind the relaunch in 2010
Ellis de Lucía, Martina ; Broad, Matthew (vedoucí práce) ; Arregui Moreno, Francisco Javier (oponent)
This thesis examines the relaunch of the negotiations for an Association Agreement between the European Union (EU) and the Southern Common Market (Mercosur) in order to understand new trends towards interregionalism after the failure of the Doha Round and the motivations of the EU in resuming the talks. The research question leading this work is: What explains the decision of the EU to relaunch negotiations with Mercosur in 2010? Moreover, two hypotheses are presented related to need of EU to re- think their economic integration strategies after the stagnation in Doha and the aim of the bloc of maintaining and strengthening its commercial and regulatory power vis-à-vis China and the United States in Latin America. Knowing the fact that in 2010 negotiations between the two blocs were relaunched, this thesis aims to prove the plausibility of the two hypotheses presented vis-à-vis other possible factors by means of process tracing. The ideational leadership of the European Commission in its legislative response to the surge in irregular migration
Forsman, Alice Felicia ; Váška, Jan (vedoucí práce) ; Broad, Matthew (oponent)
The aim of this paper is to examine the ideational leadership of the European Unions' executive institution, the European Commission, by studying its legislative response to the surge in irregular migration to the European Union in 2015 and 2016. In order to assess which form of ideational leadership the Commission expresses, key ideas, rooted in either liberalism or realism, were extracted from the selected documents with the help of an analytical tool, created for a deductive qualitative content analysis based on Watt Boolsens' seven step model. Ten legislative documents proposed by the Commission, deemed relevant to its response to irregular migration, ranging from the period May 2015 to June 2016, were selected. Meaningful entities of these documents were coded and designated a subcategory belonging to key ideas of either liberal or realist nature. These subcategories originate from the main categories: State & Individuals, Humanism & Rights, Borders & Security, and lastly International actors & Cooperation. This paper is thereby able to demonstrate which ideas prevail in the Commissions' legislative response to failures in policy during a time of crisis. The results indicate that the Commission expresses ideas predominantly rooted in realism, such as cooperation when deemed beneficial to the...
The National Politics of European Union Enlargement: The Netherlands and the scope of politicization of EU-enlargement in the national political arena
Audenaerde, Joël ; Broad, Matthew (vedoucí práce) ; Weiss, Tomáš (oponent)
In which ways has EU enlargement been framed in national parliamentary debates? And what positions do actors take on enlargement? And finally, do partisan dynamics explain these positions and frames? This thesis provides an assessment of the debate on enlargement in the Dutch national parliament between 2004 and 2020. It aims to build upon research on the nationalisation of the enlargement policy. Are the positions of national governments similar to those of parliamentary actors? Empirically, this thesis shows that enlargement in debates has lost salience over time and that mostly positions have become more negative. In terms of framing, the debates in the Netherlands are characterised by a strong focus on pragmatic frames. Both these positions can be explained by strategical considerations; a party in government tends to emphasise pragmatic frames more so. Moreover, the cultural axis of partisan dynamics explains that more conservative parties are generally more critical of enlargement.
Finding the European Union's Grand Strategy Understanding the Commission's role in formulating grand strategy
Fagliano, Lucas Agustin ; Broad, Matthew (vedoucí práce) ; Escriba, Abel (oponent)
Complexity is a crucial barrier to our understanding of how actors behave in the international arena. Market power, normative power, regulatory power, global power, civilian power, are all concepts which have been utilised to describe the EU international actorness. However, the interaction between these concepts, and how the EU employs these comprehensively has been less debated. Complexity, in this case, has the upper hand, as it is naturally an overwhelming task to parse the pieces together of the EU's strategic behaviour, because of the unique nature of the EU and the numerous avenues it utilises to exert influence in the international arena. It is only natural that different academics argue that the EU behaves according to different sources of power, as after all, the EU power has many facets. If we concentrate on trade agreements, there would be a natural inclination to think of market power. 1 However, if the focus is on the EU's use of its international identity and its diplomatic efforts to defend liberal values, a rather normative power would be more visible. 2 However, focusing on only one does not provide us with the full picture. Thus, this thesis argues that to avoid the tunnel vision which may result from looking at only one aspect of the EU's strategic behaviour prism it could be more useful...
