Cahlíková, Zuzana ; Drbohlav, Dušan (advisor) ; Stojanov, Robert (referee)
This thesis is dealing with environmental migration resulting from the planned use of the territory, i.e. development displacement or resettlement. The aim of this thesis is to describe this process, to promote its understanding and to analyze its causes and consequences on people and communities. Academic literature dealing with development displacement in general was used together with many case studies. The thesis discusses the resettlement process in the Czech Republic, especially the actual case of the development displacement in the village of Nové Heřminovy. The main part of this thesis is the research conducted in the Slezská Harta micro-region, where 675 persons were displaced due to the building of the dam Slezská Harta in the late 80s and early 90s. The method of interview was used to analyze concequences of development displacement on people and communities (i.e. villages, which were affected by the dam construction). Interviews were made with 17 individuals who were somehow affected by the process of development displacement, mainly by being displaced. Key words: environmental migration, development displacement, Slezská Harta
Fairtrade Coffee Production in Tanzania
Seidlová, Aneta ; Stojanov, Robert (advisor) ; Daněk, Tomáš (referee)
Coffee is one of the most consumed beverages in the world and its consumption is still increasing. The majority of coffee is produced by smallholders from countries of so called "global South". Their livelihoods are influenced by price fluctuations at the world commodity markets. Fairtrade system strives for improving their trade and living conditions. The primary aim of this bachelor thesis is to describe the production of coffee on Fairtrade terms in Tanzania. Main research questions focus on the economic and social impacts of Fairtrade on the livelihoods of smallholders, the process of joining the system and meeting Fairtrade standards. Secondary research questions are the perception of climate change, its impacts on the coffee production and the role of Fairtrade in adapting to these changes. The analysis consists of 12 semi-structured interviews conducted with smallholders from Kagera Cooperative Union (KCU) and Karagwe District Cooperative Union (KDCU) from Lake Victoria region. The results show ambiguous positive impacts. On one hand, better availability of education and medical services, but also different profits from social premium in both unions and criticism of one of the main benefits of Fairtrade - the purchase price, which is too low according to most of the respondents. Trends in Czech migration and development policy coherence
Seidlová, Aneta ; Stojanov, Robert (advisor) ; Novosák, Jiří (referee)
Migration and development are a globally recurring topic within media and political discourse. In Europe, the topic gained attention following the so called "refugee crisis", accompanied by rhetoric of solving the root causes of migration and increasing coherence of migration and development policy. Even though the refugee flows mainly avoided Czechia, the crisis had an impact on public and political discourse, including links to migration, development and the need for coherence in policy strategic documents. The diploma thesis analyses trends in Czech migration and development policy and their coherence in the aftermath of global financial and refugee crisis. This thesis aims to assess the progress toward coherence and identify the key areas and causes of incoherence. The concept of policy coherence for migration and development, and a model of policy coherence cycle are used as the main theoretical frameworks. To gain an insight into the process of policy formation, a distinction is made between political commitments and policies on paper, policy coordination and implementation in practice, and the potential impact of the political discourse on this process. This thesis presents attitudes and perceptions of key stakeholders in Czech migration and development policy, based on a series of 20...
Migration from Bangladesh to Europe
Mucha, Zbyněk ; Stojanov, Robert (advisor) ; Štipl, Zdeněk (referee)
and Key words This thesis deals with the contemporary topic of international migration to Europe, namely the phenomenon of migration from Bangladesh to Europe. While the media and academic literature have paid attention to the migration of residents of the Middle East and Africa to Europe, the issue of migration from Bangladesh to Europe has not been frequent and well- elucidated. Thus, this thesis aspires to solve the following research questions: 1) What are the major reasons and factors inducing migration from Bangladesh in the present day; 2) What are the main points of supply of information having an influence on the decision making of migrants; 3) What are the major trends of migration between the source regions and the final destination. As primary methodical procedures, I selected in-depth and semi-structured interviews with fifteen experts, who were interviewed in Bangladesh between January and February 2018. The following conclusions have been drawn from these interviews: 1) There is no single specific motivation for the emigration from Bangladesh as it proves to be a combination of several factors which elicit migration, whether economical, socio-political, or environmental; 2) The migrants obtain information predominantly from their relatives, friends or brokers, the so-called dalals,...
Climate change impacts on population of Sri Lanka and adaptation strategies
Molnárová, Bára ; Stojanov, Robert (advisor) ; Siwek, Tadeusz (referee)
The main aim of the study is to analyse households' adaptation measures to the climate change and its impacts in Sri Lanka such as extreme weather events - especially floods, landslides, heavy rains, droughts or water deficiency. Another objective of this study is to identify how locals perceive climate change impacts, what they think the specific causes are, what the implications and consequences are and what are their impacts on their households in selected regions in Sri Lanka. I also tried to identify which changes of climate they personally observe (if any) and what they think about it. The case study is based on my research, which I realized in July - September 2016 in Sri Lanka. I focused on two neighbour districts: one of them is Anuradhapura district, which is on the northwest of the island and it is in the dry climatic zone of the island. The second district is Matale, which is located in highlands and there is more humidity. I examined the perception of local residents to changes in the climate, which is, whether they realize that changes are caused by the global climate change and that the situation will deteriorate further, or whether they have another explanation. In connection with this, I also examined whether they have any plans or predictions of the future and how they adapt for...
Investment in the British colonies in Africa and their impact on the postcolonial economic situation
Nosková, Jana ; Stojanov, Robert (advisor) ; Klíma, Jan (referee)
Colonialism as a world phenomenon, as we know it, appeared with the advent of modern times. Its prosperity was made possible by technological advances. Colonialism in its original form almost does not exist, however it is still "alive" in its reference. The post-colonial lands still bear a variety of heritage from that time. The main objective of this work is to find out whether investments in colonies from the times of colonial rule in Great Britain can influence the state of their economies after independence, and whether this influence may last until the present. The thesis answers the following research questions: (i) Do colonial investments have an impact on the postcolonial economies of the former British colonies, represented by GDP per capita and GDP per area? (ii) Do colonial investments have an impact on the development of postcolonial economies of the former British colonies, represented by GDP growth per capita? (iii) And what criteria were distributed by British colonial investments? The method used to determine the dependence between the above variables is the calculation of the Spearman correlation coefficient. For its calculation, unique historical data on colonial investments was used. The analysis shows that the amount of investment relative to the population of the colonies...

Consumption of selected agricultural commodities in Czechia and its impacts on water resources in producing countries
Nováková, Petra ; Hák, Tomáš (advisor) ; Stojanov, Robert (referee)
The thesis is focused on the relationship between food consumption and environmental impacts on places which are often very distant from the where the consumption itself occurs. Food consumption through the international trade causes pressure on water resources in different countries. The thesis analyses the water footprint from geographical perspectives, specifically focused on national consumption of two selected crops, with an emphasis on external water footprint. The main objective is to evaluate the impacts of consumption of selected imported crops on water resources in producing countries by comparing the differences of the impacts in these countries. To evaluate these impacts, new method of revised water footprint is used. This method connects the water footprint and impact assesment on water resources. In the first section the thesis is devoted to the description of the current state of water resources in different regions of the world, water use in agriculture, international flows of virtual water and theoretical concepts of water stress and water footprint. In the next section, suitable crops are selected and the water footprint of national consumption is quantified. The following section deals with the water footprint revision and assessment of impacts on water resources in the world,...
