Big Data and Personal Data Protection in the Age of Surveillance Capitalism
Jirásková, Kristýna ; Slavíček, Daniel (advisor) ; Gvoždiak, Vít (referee)
The diploma thesis deals with the topic of personal data protection in the age of surveillance capitalism, relying on the General Data Protection Regulation or GDPR. It presents, first of all, what can be imagined by the term Big Data, since the protection of personal data consists in the constant collection of all data, among which there are personal data. In the context of this issue, the various risks of data collection and processing will be discussed. Then, attention is given to surveillance capitalism, i.e. not only the definition, but also what it consists of and what pitfalls come with it. Above all, this paper seeks to answer the question of what role the GDPR currently plays in relation to data protection, i.e. whether it is successful or not, which of course cannot be done without a more detailed analysis of this legal document. To this end, the thesis will focus on selected examples from practice that should help to answer the question posed. The role of user data in digital marketing
Laštovičková, Andrea ; Slavíček, Daniel (advisor) ; Vranka, Marek (referee)
This master thesis focuses on the role of surveillance and user data in digital marketing. It links the academic discipline of surveillance studies, which deals with the processing of personal data, with the field of digital marketing. Digital marketing, which is nowadays primarily mediated by the Big Five multinational companies, especially Google and Meta, operates primarily on huge amounts of user data. This data is often collected without the users' deeper knowledge and sold to advertisers to target and personalise advertising, analyse online shopping behaviour and modify user behaviour. Data mining thus has a crucial role in online marketing, which is constantly shifting and changing, also due to legislative protection of users' data privacy. This paper discusses the related theories of surveillance studies and links them to the practice of digital marketing. The research then focuses on the ethical aspects of the use of user data in digital marketing. It identifies and explains some of the ethical issues facing the field of digital marketing and data mining. Based on in-depth interviews with digital marketing professionals, it seeks to map professionals' attitudes towards ethical issues of working with user data and their possible solutions.

Semiotic Engineering and rules for interaction design
Prokop, Pavel ; Brejcha, Jan (advisor) ; Slavíček, Daniel (referee)
Semiotic Engineering is one of semiotic approaches to human-computer interaction problematics. Its theory is based on a simple notion of interface beeing a designers deputy through which the designer comunicates with users of this interface. Telling them, how to work with a program, he or she designed for them. Apart from teoretical foundation, semiotic engineering dispose also with research methods that can be used to evaluate a way an interface communicates with its users. This way it can compare with other non-semitic theories in this branch of research and thanks to its orientation to communication, it is even able to bring new points o wiev. Its theory and methods are used in this thesis as a basis for creation of a set of rules for user interface designers, that shoul serve them as guidelines for their thinking about interface. It turns out that semiotic theory is capable of bringing concerete results for praxis in the area of interaction design and it is not bound only to the academic enviroment.
