Causes and consequences of alcohol prohibition in USA and in Sweden and their comparation
Kocáková, Katarína ; Šťastný, Daniel (advisor) ; Mičúch, Marek (referee)
The main subject of this study is a comparation of two different approaches in solutions of excessive consumption of alcohol in USA and Sweden. The both countries applied a prohibition for decreasing of the consumption. It was a form of National prohibition in USA and a form of rationing system in Sweden. A common feature of both solutions was difficult legal access to alcohol, after an initial decline there was the increase in consumption of alcoholic beverages and related subsequent rise in crime. Different aspects were: the introduction of a form of prohibition, and especially the sanctions for breach of restrictive limitations. The study also highlights the failure of both approaches in the USA and Sweden.
The impact of the tax havens on the public finance of Slovakia
Pištejová, Jana ; Janíčko, Martin (advisor) ; Mičúch, Marek (referee)
International tax planning deals with the tax benefits, their seeking and using by the tax entities and corporations. Even if the tax havens are generally considered as small islands, the different types of tax advantages are offered by the developed countries of the North America or Europe. This paper focuses on the analysis of the inward of foreign direct investments into the European countries with the preferential tax regimes. It explains the relationship between the inward of the investments and the factors which affect them. The inward of the foreign direct investments is the dependent variable, the independent variables are tax rates on corporate income, unemployment, as well as political stability. Although results of econometric analysis did not confirm our initial hypothesis that the lower tax burden will increase the inward of the investments to the country, this increase can be caused under the other circumstances, such as secrecy, property protection, stable political situation or simplicity and utility of the financial markets.
Impact of online user reviews on demand for PC and video games
Veselá, Anna ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Hurník, Jaromír (referee)
The thesis examines impact of online user reviews, expressed in 5-star rating system, on demand for PC and video games. Used weekly data are collected from www.amazon.co.uk for period 2000 - 2012. The thesis contributes to discussion which takes place between supporters of superstar theory and supporters of long tail theory. Panel structure of the dataset referred to application of fixed effects model for estimation of basic and extended model. Both estimates proved negative influence of assigned number of stars on sales rank. Basic model estimated influence of one unit change of stars on rank by 9 positions, extended model estimated this change to be 10 positions. Quantile estimate also proved negative influence of stars on sales rank. The influence is strongest for the lowest quantile of dependent variable (tau = 0,05) representing 5 % best-selling titles, where one unit change of stars causes change of 35 positions in opposite direction. With increasing quantiles this influence decreases to zero. It proves that within the market for PC and video games online user reviews contribute to superstar effect.
The Analysis of the Factors Having Effect on the Price of Used Cars in Slovakia
Beleš, Tomáš ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Chytilová, Helena (referee)
The following thesis concerns the research of basic factors affecting the price of used cars in Slovakia. The hedonic price regression and a data set of over 2600 units has been used. The data set was acquired from the webpages of the largest second-hand-car seller in Slovakia named AAA Auto. Estimated parameters have been a help in decomposing the price of a second-hand car into its determinants. Besides the negative affect of the age and the odometer state a significant price bonus concerning home-produced cars (Skoda) has been confirmed. The price discrimination concerning the odometer state from the drivers' point of view has also been confirmed.
The analysis of return on investment in education on economic faculties in the Czech Republic
Slezáková, Kateřina ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Mirvald, Michal (referee)
The purpose of this bachelor thesis is to prove correlation between wage and school degree. For verification is used regression analysis, ordinary least squares method. Here is approved the possitive correlation between wage and school degree so the next is to calculate return of investment in college education. Student are divided into groups according to the place where they come from. For each of them is calculated costs of the study. For the calculation is used method of the net present value as the internal rate of return and payback period. The results shows that the greatest net present value has studying Charles University in Prague. The payback period of investment in college education is greatest in Prague. This is due to higher earnings in the capital city.
Determinants of housing demand in Moravian-Silesian Region
Rusanová, Yvonne ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Chytil, Zdeněk (referee)
The bachelor thesis aims to define determinants of housing demand. I implemented the regression analysis on a quarterly data from Moravian-Silesian region. Regression analysis has demonstrated significant impact of mortgage rate, net disposable income of households and unemployment rate in on housing demand. 1% increase in mortgage rate would decrease the number of house and dwelling transfers by 9,1%. Coefficients of other significant variables are not testifying because of the presence of correlation. Surprisingly, prices of houses and dwellings have appeared as irrelevant.
Economy of Religion and Conversion
Zehnalová, Simona ; Potužák, Pavel (advisor) ; Mičúch, Marek (referee)
This work defines religion market as a network industry when at a certain level of switching costs can lead in individual's locking up in the current group and thus prevent his conversion. First, the participating individual's utility function is defined. It is largely influenced by the probability which the individual attaches to the existence of God and afterlife. The study shows, that at sufficiently high level of social capital, it is advantageous to participate for rationally minded individuals although they are not believers. The empirical part demonstrates the effect of specific religious and social capitals on individual's decision to convert through the logit model. This influence is positive, compared to original expectations (i.e. the higher the social and specific capital, the higher the tendency to convert). It can confirm the thesis that the influence of these individual's growth of specific capital is causing higher demand for more strict organizations which eliminate free-riders and provide higher social capital.
Analysis of the demand for services of selected driving school
Milatová, Barbora ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Koubek, Ivo (referee)
This thesis examines effects of selected factors on the demand for services in chosen driving school. Testing, carried out by the regression analysis, demonstrates how the total monthly sales are influenced by prices of different types of courses, selected marketing strategy, the presence of discount in a given month, the success of students in driving exam, the number of training cars and the number of training teachers. Furthermore, the price elasticity of demand for two types of courses has been measured. These courses had been selected due to their most significant impacts on the price elasticity of demand. Once the model had been transformed and the four variables causing multicollinearity have been omitted, the final result showed that the demand for driving is mainly influenced by well-chosen marketing strategy and a success of students at their first examination. The effect of price of the course on the demand proved to be insignificant.
The analysis of effect of BMI on wages in Czech republic.
Mikulková, Kateřina ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Svoboda, Miroslav (referee)
The aim of this thesis is to analyze the relationship between BMI and wages against women and men in the Czech republic. Some previous researches, which are focused on this topic agree, that there exist negative correlation between growing BMI and wages of women, but men neither. Tested hypothesis of this research is that, if BMI of women grows, it leads to decline in their wages. Second tested hypothesis is, if BMI of men grows, it doesn't lead to decline in their wages. Using regression analysis and ordinary least squares method, it is revealed, that there is no statistically significant effect of BMI on wages against people in the Czech republic.
Demand for cinemas - what determines the consumer behaviour?
Řeháková, Petra ; Mičúch, Marek (advisor) ; Kovanda, Lukáš (referee)
The main aim of this diploma thesis is to identify the determinants of behavior of demand for multiplexes in Prague. The main building material is the dataset of attendance and revenues evolution for individual movies distributed between years 2002 and 2011, always for the first four weeks from the premiere, provided by the Union of Film Distributors. The paper investigates consumer behavior on the movie market. The demand for movies is the dependent variable measured by the number of visitors in the corresponding weeks. The subject of analysis -- explanatory variable - is price, film rating (critics), genre, country of origin, character of time frame, frequency of screenings in a given week, format (2D/3D), length of movie, popularity of the actor/director, impact of movie series etc. The data are exposed to the regression according to which the significance of different variables is tested. The hypothesis about strong negative correlation of the price and quantity demanded is investigated based on the results, (Dewenter R., Westermann M., 2005) versus the hypothesis of weak sensitivity those two variables (Sangho Kim, 2009) against a more significant relationship of demand and other determinants. The influence of price on attendance has shown to be insignificant on the Prague movie market in the short term. A significant determinant impacting the attendance for a movie in the entire monitored period is the film rating, actor, length of movie, and number of screenings.
