Evaluation of Usefulness of Debugging Tools
Martinec, Tomáš ; Děcký, Martin (advisor) ; Yaghob, Jakub (referee)
Debugging is a very time-consuming activity for programmers. Although the number of proposed debugging tools is large, the number of tools that are actually adopted by practitioners and used during development of software is less than one may expect. Many believe that one reason for the situation is that it is hard to estimate whether the implementation efforts of proposed debugging tools or approaches are worth the gain. The first goal of this thesis is to propose a methodology for the evaluation of usefulness of debugging tools. To provide an exemplary usage of the methodology, a study of usefulness of typical debugging tools for development of operating systems is conducted. Secondly, the thesis also explores and documents further aspects of how programmers debug software. Powered by TCPDF (www.tcpdf.org)
State secrecy v. Freedom of information - Bradley Manning's case in the historical context
Martinec, Tomáš ; Kozák, Kryštof (advisor) ; Calda, Miloš (referee)
This thesis called State Secrecy vs. Freedom of Information - Bradley Manning's case in historical context compares the case of Bradley Manning, alleged source of leaks in recent Wikileaks affair with the precedential case of Daniel Ellsberg that took place in the beginning of the 1970s. Ellsberg provided the New York Times with a copy of a "Top Secret - Sensitive" report on the evolvement of US foreign policy towards the Indochina region after the WWII. The thesis argues that even though both cases differ, in particular, in their execution, the governmental conduct with respect to both sources of leaks was inadequate and a mistrial might be declared in Manning's case as in was during the prosecution of Daniel Ellsberg. The thesis also argues that if the trial is to be held during the Manning's case, there are some solid arguments in favour of the defence.
Dispute resolution within the framework of WTO
Martinec, Tomáš ; Balaš, Vladimír (advisor) ; Tymofeyeva, Alla (referee)
This thesis, entitled WTO Dispute Settlement Mechanism focuses on the issue of direct effect of WTO law with respect to the possibility of private persons to claim damages in case they are affected by the retaliatory measures adopted by the injured WTO-member in response to the violation of WTO rules perpetrated by their government. In connection with the aforesaid, the thesis compares the approach of the United States of America with the one of the European Union. Given the fact that the jurisprudence of the European Court of Justice regarding the issue of direct effect of WTO law has undergone substantial development, the thesis also analyses the jurisprudence and its outcomes. This thesis is divided into two parts. The first one introduces the dispute settlement procedure before the Dispute settlement body under the Understanding on Rules and Procedures Governing the Settlement of Disputes. The thesis focuses on particular stages of the procedure before the DSB and introduces the particular actors of the dispute settlement mechanism. The first part consists of three chapters, first of which deals with particular actors, second defining particular stages of the procedure and third focusing on the stage of implementation of DSB decisions. The second part that is also divided into three chapters...

The issue of race in the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of the United States : the evolving interpretation of the Equal Protection Clause
Martinec, Tomáš ; Sehnálková, Jana (advisor) ; Kozák, Kryštof (referee)
This thesis entitled The Issue of Race in the Jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of the United States: The Evolving Interpretation of the Equal Protection Clause analyses the jurisprudence of the Supreme Court of the United States concerning Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment to the Constitution of the United States, in particular the following decisions: Plessy v. Ferguson, Sweatt v. Painter, Brown v. Board of Education, Topeka, Regents of the University of California v. Bakke, Grutter v. Bollinger, Gratz v. Bollinger, Fisher v. University of Texas and Schuette v. Coalition to Defend Affirmative Action. The analysis of the above- mentioned decisions illustrates the evolution of the philosophical background of the Supreme Court. After the Second World War, the natural-law legal philosophy began influencing the Justices and slightly overshadowed the positive-law current that was predominant in the pre- War era, in particular in the 19th century. This new philosophical background of the High Court help to constitutionally entrench the affirmative action policies by Justice Powell's opinion in Bakke and particularly by Grutter. However, the natural-law current has never become as dominant as the positive-law one in the 19th century, and as shown in Grutter's companion case of Gratz...
Interactive Debugger for MSIM
Martinec, Tomáš ; Děcký, Martin (advisor) ; Malohlava, Michal (referee)
The goal of this thesis is to extend the debugging possibilities of MSIM by connecting it to the Eclipse IDE. MSIM (MIPS Simulator) is a machine simulator based on a MIPS processor and a simple hardware model. The simulator is primarily used for education of operating systems. At the beginning of this work MSIM provided basic features for debugging the code that runs inside the virtual machine. The basic features are accomplished by implementing GNU Debugger (GDB) remote connection interface and also by several integrated debugging commands. The work presented in this thesis connects the Eclipse IDE debugging front-end to MSIM via the GDB remote connection interface. Necessary means to provide comfortable experience of both source-level and assembly-level debugging are implemented. Additionally, a discussion about advanced debugging features such as: user space code debugging with a thread scope; call tree construction; reverse execution; and other techniques is presented in the thesis.
