Experiences of gym members with Performance Enhancing Drugs
Macho, Juraj ; Mudrák, Jiří (advisor) ; Harbichová, Ivana (referee)
Title: Experiences of gym members with Performance Enhancing Drugs. Objectives: The aim of the diploma work is to explore the prevalence of doping in two particular fitness centres, to specify the most used doping substances, frequency and form of using, way of acquiring and to define reasons leading gym members to using these substances. No less important goal of the work is to find out the most reported benefits resulting from using doping as well as the most reported negative side effects. Methods: The main method used in the research is a questionnaire survey that is divided into three sections. The goal of the survey is to assess aspects of using performance enhancement drugs amongst gym members. Results: We found that 8% of the respondents reported positive experience with anabolic steroids as well as 5,3% of the respondents with diuretics and 3,7% of the respondents reported that they have used growth hormones. The most common substances are nandrolone and stanozolole (53,3%) followed by oxandrolone and testosterone (46,7%). Except these doping substances respondents mentioned methandienone, trenbolone, oxymetholone, clenbuterol, dianabol and boldenone. Keywords: doping, anabolic steroids, attitudes, recreational athletes, performance enhancing drugs

This thesis aims to specify the role of motivation in tendency to dope in a fitness environment. The aim reflects research questions focused on external and internal motivational factors and their influence on doping tendencies. We combine quantitative and qualitative research strategies to achieve this aim. The quantitative approach is based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (Ajzen, 1991) and the Self-Determination Theory (Deci & Ryan, 1985; Ryan & Deci, 2017). A total of 142 fitness center members (81 men and 61 women, age 30,2 ± 9,39 years) participated in this part of the study. In regression models, we observed some significant effects of the independent variables on variables stemming from the Theory of Planned Behavior. Specifically, we found a significant positive effect of external regulation (ß = ,195; p < ,05; R2 = ,324) and a significant negative effect of intrinsic motivation (ß = -,288; p < 0,001; R2 = ,324) in the model of attitudes toward doping. Furthermore, we found a significant positive effects of attitudes toward doping (ß = ,646; p < 0,001; R2 = 563) and doping offer in the fitness center (ß = 341; p < 0,001; R2 = 563) in the model of intention to dope. In the qualitative approach, we implemented a methodological framework of interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA)...

Title: The Effect of Selected Strengthening Methods on Muscle Hypertrophy Objectives: The aim of this thesis is to find out which of the two selected strengthening methods has bigger influence on muscle hypertrophy. The first one consists of 70 - 80 % 1-RM and 8 - 12 repetitions. The second one consists of 90 - 95 % 1- RM and 3 - 6 repetitions. Dietary wasn't changed during the intervention. Methods: Bioimpedance analysis and somatotype measurement were used. Results: According to the measurements of body composition obtained after applying the two methods we found out that there was 1 % increase of total body water after the second month of intervention. Based on this fact, the method 90 - 95 % 1- RM and 3 - 6 repetitions proved to be more efficient concerning the growth of muscles. Keywords: muscle strength, strength training, muscle mass, nutrition
