Linguistic variation in the Spanish of Cuba
Laurencio Tacoronte, Ariel ; Zavadil, Bohumil (advisor) ; Čermák, Petr (referee)
Variation in Cuban Spanish Abstract The aim of this thesis is to deal with the topic of variation in Cuban Spanish, with a special emphasis on the Havana variety, one of the most innovative and recognizable within the island's linguistic landscape. The work is divided into three sections: phonetics and phonology, lexis and semantics, morphology and syntax. The cases described are illustrated with entries taken from a lexico- graphical work of personal authorship, or likewise with usage examples mainly taken from the Reference Corpus of Contemporary Spanish (CREA). On the basis of the analysis of the collected data, this paper examines the state of variability and balance inherent to the system, in order to deepen in the understanding of the mechanisms that shape this language variety. Keywords: Spanish language, Cuban Spanish, variation, dictionary of Cuban Spanish Variación lingüística en el español de Cuba Resumen El objetivo de la presente tesis es abordar el tema de la variación en el español hablado en Cuba, con especial énfasis en la modalidad de La Habana, una de las más innovadoras y representa- tivas del panorama lingüístico insular. Illocutionary Modulation of the Utterance. The Case of estar + gerundio
Laurencio Tacoronte, Ariel ; Čermák, Petr (advisor) ; Aurová, Miroslava (referee) ; Gutiérrez Rubio, Enrique (referee)
The studies of the different forms and structures of language usually take for granted that these refer to non-linguistic entities, i.e., that language reflects the world. In the case of verbal devices, such entities happen to be time, aktionsart or aspect. In view of the proven impossibility of giving an accurate account of the behavior of such devices by means of these categories, disquisitions and further elucidations are perpetuated, what complicates the pro- blem to not very judicious levels. Moreover, because the conclusions reached get equally in conflict with a linguistic reality which resists them, contradicts them. So there is no other choice left than to declare exceptions or special uses, or banish the insubordinate segments to the periphery of the system. Our first goal will therefore be the previous establishment of a theoretical framework, as a cure for the a posteriori theorizing based on what is seen on the surface, which would allow us to assign a possible invariant central value to linguistic elements, for which we will rely on the metaoperational system of H. Adamczewski. In it, such elements are operators defined by their belonging to one of two phases in the process of utterance assembly, namely, by a rhematic character, of proposition of the information, or by a thematic...
Textual Analysis of the Extant Text of The Secret History of the Mongols
Laurencio Tacoronte, Ariel ; Zikmundová, Veronika (advisor) ; Luvsandorj, Jugder (referee)
Textual Analysis of the Extant Original of The Secret History of the Mongols Abstract The purpose of the present thesis is to analyze every aspect of textual nature present in the Chinese original of the Secret History of the Mongols. The work consists of four chapters that touch issues such as the Chinese characters used for the transcription, their pronunciation and meaning, as well as invented or wrong characters. A list is presented with all the Mongolian syllables obtainable by means of the Chinese transcription system and with all the characters used for this. Subsequently, graphic aspects such as word division or punctuation are examined. The last chapter approaches the glossing system of the Mongolian text used in this work. On the basis of the analysis of the collected data, some plausible assumptions about historical or linguistic issues are advanced, such as the ethnic identity of the author of the transcript or the author of the glosses, the existence of a Mongolian dialect with own characteristics in the Yuan dynasty environment, or the reason why this transcript was glossed, and whether it was done out of an original written in Uyghur script. Keywords: textual analysis, Mongolian language, The Secret History of the Mongols, Yuan Dynasty

Grammatical descriptors of the language of the Secret history of the Mongols. (One of the questions of the direct Chinese translation of SHM)
Laurencio Tacoronte, Ariel ; Oberfalzerová, Alena (referee) ; Luvsandorj, Jugder (advisor)
The purpose of the present thesis is to deal with the topíc of the Chinese descriptive particles of Mongolian affixes, used in the side-by-side literal translation of the Chi nese transcription of The Secret History of the Mongols. The work is presented in the form of a list of Mongolian affixes. Each entry is completed with the Chinese character used for transcribing the given affix, a very brief explanation of it, the Chinese character used as a descriptor, and examples of the use of every affix. On the basis of the analysis of the collected data, this paper surveys the frequency of occurrence of these descriptors in the interlinear Chi nese glosses, so as to give evidence on the Chinese glossarists' intention to provide relevant information for the teaching of the Mongolian language.
