Kristen Binda A Donkey's Worth in South Africa: Domestic Laborer or Export Product; Socioeconomic impacts of China's skin trade on South African donkey owners Master Thesis Prague 2019 Abstract Within South Africa, rural communities use working animals instead of, or combined with mechanization for farming and chores. Development progress may have evaded these areas yet impacts them through globalization and China's expanded market power. The burgeoning market for ejiao, a popular Traditional Chinese Medicine made from boiling donkey hides is a growing issue. Wealthier Chinese consumers, a stalled South African rural population who missed development's benefits plus increasing economic and political engagements between the two countries allows a monopolized, and often exploitative market for donkeys. Politicians are eager to partner with Chinese ejiao retailers despite resulting decimation of donkey populations in some areas of Africa and destruction of livelihoods. I evaluate the value of donkeys as domestic laborers within South Africa along with how China's rapidly expanding market for ejiao and simultaneous consumption of donkeys has affected South Africa to answer in which context donkeys are more valuable. Prisoners' debt after release in the Czech Republic: Approaches and barriers to improving outcomes for prisoners.
McClure, Max Samuel ; Kváča, Vladimír (advisor) ; Mertl, Jiří (referee)
This master thesis addresses financial capability levels and contextual factors leading indebted prisoners and indebted people with criminal pasts in the Czech Republic to one of three debt relief outcomes: failure to submit a successful application for personal bankruptcy, successful application but failure to complete the personal bankruptcy process, or successful completion. Although debt relief has been researched extensively from the social, legal, and economic points of view, a very small portion of the surveyed literature has addressed the group of debtors that does not apply for debt relief. The primary focus of research was to shed light on why some debtors that qualify to apply for personal bankruptcy do not do so. To explore this phenomenon, several steps were taken. First, debt counselors were interviewed to explore a list of possible reasons why debtors either didn't start or didn't finish the debt relief process. Using this preliminary feedback, a survey for debt counselors was created and refined. Once the survey had been organized using Google Forms and piloted with interviewed debt counselors and feedback was received via follow-up interviews, the survey was distributed, and results were analyzed using financial capability concepts. Statistical analyses of results were calculated...

This tool is used in the work for better orientation in the needs and risks of people in the process of release. The theoretical anchoring of the work also deals with the problem of recidivism and adaptation after release from prison. And the issue of homelessness in connection with substance abuse and also in connection with crime. Furthermore, attention is paid to the problem of indebtedness, which can complicate the social situation of people after serving a sentence. The factual context of the researched topic is devoted to the causes of the difficult resocialization of released prisoners and to the reasons why recidivists are most often prosecuted. There are also some important statistical data concerning the number of persons imprisoned in the Czech Republic in comparison with EU countries. Attention is also paid to the amendment of the Insolvency Act...

Matuštíková, Anna ; Kváča, Vladimír (advisor) ; Ditrych Lenc, Michaela (referee)
This thesis is a case study with a goal to comprehensively map and depict the evolution of the so- called non-supplement zones. This name is an abbreviated term that is used in media for the general provision authorizing establishing of areas of higher incidence of socially undesirable phenomena, where housing supplements are not to be payed to any new applicants. Bohemian and Moravian municipalities can make use of this measure since 2017. Thus they aim to fight the poverty industry and the problems connected with it. Additionally, a Constitutional Court decision on the appeal on this measure made by a group of senators is awaited since 2017. In this thesis, the problematique is viewed both on policy and politics level, both on national and local level, using the theory of the policy process, agenda setting, and the multiple streams theory. Under examination are also the levels of discourses and framing of the problem. To demonstrate a local context, there was chosen the case of the Kladno municipality, which holds a specific position in the context since it is the first city in the Czech Republic that decided to declare this general provision on its entire territory. However, later the decision was annulled by the regional administration. The research was based mainly on documents survey, media...
