Carpathian German Minority 1953-1990: Changes of Homeland Images in Expellee Journal Karpatenpost
Ďurková, Mária Kristína ; Emler, David (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
The master's thesis deals with the linguistic images of homeland (Heimat) in the expellee journal Karpatenpost. The research subject is the newspaper of the displaced Carpathian Germans, Karpatenpost, which began to be published in the Federal Republic in the early 1950s under the auspices of the Carpathian German Expellee Association. This periodical dealt with issues of homeland and intensively discussed the state of the Carpathian German minority. It contains memories from the old homeland and information about the state of the Carpathian German minority in the Federal Republic. Therefore, Karpatenpost can be considered an authentic source of the displaced Slovak German-speaking minority. Discourse analysis was chosen as the method, which shows that in the expellee journal Karpatenpost, there are semantic shifts in the concept of Heimat. The loss of the territorial old homeland forced the expellees to retreat into the homeland of memory. Their ideas about the old homeland are often idyllic and exalted. However, the confrontation with transforming familiar spaces during the expellees' journeys conditioned a re-definition of the concept.

The precondition how to become an active participant on the economy recovery is a stable job. The conclusion of this work is, that expelled Germans were from the beginning an active part of postwar economic reconstruction of Germany, despite of the fact, that there were some structural problems in the economy like a black market, lack of accommodation facilities in the cities or unequable dislocation of these people in the occupied zones. These problems were removed by the currency and economy reforms. After the reforms came in sight, that expelled Germans represented a positive part of the economic reconstruction in form of free, qualified and cheap labour force, which could be purposefully use. This evaluation is based on critical interpretation of the facts received from the literature, scholarly articles and Internet sources.
A Comparative Analysis of Nationalist Terrorism in the Case of the IRA and the Italian Fascist Movement 1919-1922
Šimák, Vojtěch ; Pešta, Mikuláš (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
The work examines the violent campaigns of the Irish Republican Army and the fascist movement in Italy between the years 1919-1922, with the aim of demonstrating the utilization of terrorist methods in the case of the fascists. Subsequently, both examples undergo a comparative analysis, where the IRA serves as a control sample, in order to confront them with David C. Rapoport's generational theory of waves of international terrorism and to place them within a specific wave or offer an alternative theoretical framework for fascist violence. The research primarily relies on extensive secondary literature supplemented by primary sources of archival, newspaper, and propagandistic nature. The ambition of the entire work is not only to contribute to the study of fascism but especially to terrorist studies and the understanding of the role of political violence in the interwar period.
History of the German-speaking Inhabitants of the Czech lands in the Museum: Comparison of the Exhibitions Experience Homeland and Our Germans
Nagy, Kristýna ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Swider, Malgorzata (referee)
The master thesis examines and compares two new museum exhibitions dedicated to the history of the German-speaking population of the Czech lands. These are the exhibition Experience Homeland in the Sudeten German Museum in Munich and Our Germans in the Ústí nad Labem City Museum. The subject of the analysis is the creation and current form of these exhibitions and the story of history they present to the visitor. Both exhibitions were documented and compared on the basis of a catalogue of questions based on a critical analysis of historical sources. The results of the analysis show that, although both museums were planned in the same time period and in an atmosphere that encouraged a shared critical perspective on the previously different interpretations of Czech-German history, the final forms of the two museums continue to present a significant part of history in different ways, and neither has fully fulfilled its original intent. The exhibitions present the 18th and 19th century periods very similarly and also critically reflect the development of nationalism among both Czech and German speakers. The political development of the 20th century, however, is depicted by the exhibitions each from its own perspective. The results of the research suggest that despite the current functioning...
The Window of Opportunity. Cross-border environmental exchange on the South Moravian-Lower Austrian border in 1984-1995
Vnoučková, Kateřina ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Olšáková, Doubravka (referee) ; Šimková, Pavla (referee)
The dissertation deals with cross-border contacts and transfers between South Moravia and Lower Austria in the field of environment. The thesis traces this topic from the mid-1980s to the mid-1990s. During this time, the global de-escalation of tensions between East and West enabled the development of cross-border contacts already in the era of the closed border and subsequently after the fall of the Iron Curtain. Thus, the thesis draws on the transnational history of late socialism and the transition period and extends this research to include a regional perspective. The aim of the thesis is to show which role the environment played in cross-border contacts between the examined border regions. The thesis follows this aim in three levels of research. Firstly, it addresses the question of whether 1989 was a significant turning point in cross-border contacts, or whether there was continuity between developments in the 1980s and 1990s. Secondly, it examines the relationship between central and local developments and how they affect each other. Thirdly, the thesis focuses on cross-border transfers and the question to what extent asymmetry and different living standards discouraged or created opportunities for these transfers. The thesis answers these research questions in three thematic chapters - the...
Postwar Expulsion of Germans from Liberec, 1945-1947
Záveský, Michal ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Nigrin, Tomáš (referee)
This bachelor's thesis deals with the issue of the post-war displacement of Germans from Liberec and its surroundings. In the introduction, the German history of the city is presented. It mainly focuses on the period of the Munich Agreement and the associated incorporation of the city into the German Empire. Furthermore, the work examines the events of the end of the Second World War and the liberation of Liberec by the Red Army. After that, the work deals with the process itself and the organization of the transfer of Germans from Liberec. First, the disorganized expulsion that began in Liberec immediately after the end of the war is examined. This phase was often accompanied by violent incidents and organizational difficulties. Then the Potsdam Conference is mentioned, which was perceived as an intermediate link to the preparation of organized transfers. These transfers began in January 1946 and thesis mainly examines their organization and process, which was not always without problems. This phase of expulsion was officially ended in November 1946, but the transports continued with an additional phase that ended in 1951. At the end of the work, the immediate...

Rybák, David ; Váška, Jan (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
This thesis studies the effect of realistic and idealistic lines of thought on British foreign policy during the Italo-Ethiopian conflict. The research is based on chosen events, which are classified as realistic or idealistic and then shows the manifestations of these lines during the Italo- Ethiopian conflict and their influence on British foreign policy. The main goal of the thesis is to analyze the manifestations of these two lines of thought and then confirm or refute the general way of accepted definitions of manifestation these lines of thought defined in literature. In the conclusion, the work confirms the generally accepted thesis, that the realistic line dominated British foreign policy and the idealistic line replaced it, albeit significantly, but only for a short period of time.
Reflection of the Sudeten German question in the Czech press in the crisis year 1938: Právo lidu and Venkov
Holmanová, Kateřina ; Kučera, Jaroslav (advisor) ; Konrád, Ota (referee)
anglicky The purpose of this thesis is to explore how the papers Právo lidu and Venkov, viewed the Sudeten German question in 1938 and how they expressed their opposition to the situation. The first key affair of 1938, which greatly strained coexistence between Czechs and Germans in Czechoslovakia, was the Anschluss of Austria, which many Sudeten Germans enthusiastically supported. This soon became the inspiration for a more severe solution to the Sudeten German question. The Anschluss supplied many Sudeten Germans with the conviction that the disputed Czechoslovak border areas would be annexed by the German Reich. This contributed towards increased hostilities between SdP supporters and Czechoslovak authorities. In negotiations with the government, Henlein pretended to be interested in improving the position of the German minority in Czechoslovakia, but in reality, the SdP sought to make the Sudeten-German issue a subject of international policy negotiations. The increased conflict, hand in hand with the gradual sharpening of SdP policy, radicalized the German population, primarily affecting the activist parties, who gradually lost all remnants of their support. Considering the tight scope of this bachelor thesis it would be impossible to record and recount the entire media spectrum of the period,...
Beatified Gerhard Hirschfelder - the contribution of a religious figure to the creation of a transnational site of memory
Peltanová, Tereza ; Konrád, Ota (advisor) ; Swider, Malgorzata (referee)
Řešitel: Bc. Tereza Peltanová Studijní program: Německá a středoevropská studia Název práce: Beatified Gerhard Hirschfelder - the contribution of a religious figure to the creation of a transnational site of memory Abstract The diploma thesis deals with the origin and development of the cult of the German priest Gerhard Hirschfelder. In the 1930s he worked as a popular chaplain and youth pastor, first in the border village of Czermna and then in Bystrzyca Kłodzka. He disagreed with limiting the power of the Roman Catholic Church by national socialists. He paid for his attitude with his life in the Dachau concentration camp. After the end of the war, the original German and Czech population of the area of Kłodzko was expelled and replaced by Polish people. Since the late 1990s, Hirschfelder has been worshiped by all three nations. He was beatified in 2010. The thesis is a case study of a transnational site of memory (lieu de mémoire). It examines under what circumstances, thanks to which actors and in what form the cult of the German martyr arose on Polish territory. Based on that information, the thesis tries to deduce what symbolism the figure of the priest currently carries for individual national groups.
