Privatisation of Security in the Context of the "War on Terror": Analysing the Private Military Companies Phenomenon

V Praze, dne 25. července 2013 ………………………………… Abstract The main focus of this thesis is the phenomenon of private military companies and their deployment in situations of armed conflict conducted under the auspices of the so-called "War on Terrorism". The aim is to provide the reader with an introductory insight into this issue, describe specific activities of private military companies during operations in Afghanistan and Iraq, and to answer research questions about their positive or negative contribution to the overall results of these conflicts and the possible impact on civil-military relations. The main thesis of this work is that the performance of these companies can not be categorically evaluated because it is different from case to case. There are, however, some general trends which can be traced in regard to "War on Terrorism". They mainly relate to the lack of efficient state control of private military companies and their conduct. The work is divided into several parts. The first deals with the historical development of conducting military operations with the help of non-state financially motivated actors. The development of the national security policy of the USA and source of its identity between 1989 and 2008

Uplynulých 20let je obdobím, během něhož se vystřídaly tři administrativy amerických prezidentů: George H. Walker Bush, William Jefferson Clinton a George Walker Bush jr. Přesněji řečeno, hovoříme zde o dvou republikánských administrativách a jedné demokratické administrativě. V této práci bych rád popsal vývoj zdroje národní zahraničně-politické identity Spojených států na pozadí Národní bezpečnostní strategie v období mezi roky 1989 a 2008. Rámcově zde tak hovoříme přibližně o dvou dekádách, ve vývoji zahraniční politiky USA především v její bezpečnostní podobě.

Social inequality as a threat - Securitization with reference to Šluknovsko events Bc. Nelly Dederová Master's thesis Social inequality as a threat - Securitization with reference to Šluknovsko events deals with construction of so called "problem" of Šluknov region in connection to Šluknovsko events (two physical clashes in towns Nový Bor and Rumburk which happened in August 2011 and following series of protests, demonstrations and rallies which were lingering in Šluknov region towns until 2012), using theory of securitization made by Barry Buzan, Ole Wæver and Jaap de Wilde, who are representatives of Copenhagen school of security studies. The fact that participants of political and security discourse were referring to Šluknovsko events using securitization language (marking specific referent object as endangered, proposing exceptional measures and demanding their legitimized adoption) represents author's underlying premise.

Comparing the US and European Union Security Policies Related to the Threat of Weapons of Mass Destruction Proliferation

The purpose of this assignment is to compare and contrast the non-proliferation policies of the European Union and the United States after 9/11, based on key documents. To begin the focus will be on weapons of mass destruction (WMD); definition, types, key agreements and the organisations fighting against the proliferation. The research will continue by addressing the non-proliferation policy of the EU and the USA on key documents and case studies and how their approach to the iranian nuclear programme has been affected by them. Finally to conclude there will be an analysis of the differences between the policies.

Versailles international system

Tato práce bude analýzou mezinárodních vztahů v Evropě, resp. ve světě, mezi léty 1919-1939. V žádném případě se nebude jednat o historickou práci, protože si myslíme, že dané období bylo historiky velmi pečlivě prozkoumáno. Práce je rozdělena do dvou hlavních částí - historické a teoretické. Historická analýza má za úkol přinést hlubší vhled do vztahů mezi státy, přinést nám jakési porozumění unikátní historické skutečnosti. Teorie nám pomáhá chápat realitu z určitého hlediska. Velmi mnoho specifických aspektů té které doby je teorií odsunuto do pozadí, aby mohl vzniknout soubor principů, podle kterých lze realitu mezinárodních vztahů uchopit. Na druhou stranu historici jsou opatrní, aby vymýšleli obecné teorie chování mezi státy a dávají přednost popisu konkrétních historických událostí, při kterém využívají jiný pojmový aparát než teoretici mezinárodních vztahů. Nám půjde v tomto textu o syntézu obou přístupů a nesnažíme se stranit ani jednomu táboru. Z této perspektivy proti sobě postavíme dvě období - vídeňský koncert a versailleský systém a budeme se snažit odhalit nej důležitější rysy těchto dvou mezinárodních systémů. Proti sobě bude postaven systém mocenské rovnováhy (evropský koncert) a versailleský systém s vírou v univerzální hodnoty. V analýze principů mocenské rovnováhy se opíráme o myšlenky...

Structural policy in the Czech Republic - possibilities and limits of multi-level governance concept

This thesis is a case study which in the theoretical part deals with the concept of multi-level governance and its usefulness for study of the structural policy in the Czech Republic In the empirical part the basic postulates of this approach are applied to the functioning of the structural policy in the CR and subsequently reviewed. The projects funded by EU structural funds are used for the empirical review. On these examples it is examined, if and to what extent and in what way it is possible to consider the multi-level governance's concept basic postulates valid. According to set criteria and subsequent evaluation of completed projects, this concept to the operation of the structural policy in the CR does not endorse. Sweden and European Integration in the Field of Security

The thesis "Sweden and European Integration in the Field of Security" deals with the Swedish role in the military dimension of the EU"s Common Security Policy. The thesis applies the concept of "Integration Dilemma" that forms the basis of the theory of national integration policy formulated by Nikolaj Petersen. The thesis draws on Petersen"s premise that all states involved in integration sooner or later experience an integration dilemma constituted by difficult choices between preserving autonomy and exercising influence on other participants. According to Petersen the salience of the integration dilemma differs among states depending on their influence capability, stress sensitivity and degree of identification with ideological sources of integration. Petersen argues that to handle the dilemma, national governments will most likely use adaptive strategies typical for the "balancing policy" mode. Petersen also predicts that countries characterised by high stress sensitivity, limited influence capability and aloofness from the ethos of European integration will perceive the dilemma as highly salient. Petersen assumes that integration policies of those countries will also include strategies characteristic for the "acquiescent" or "quiescent" mode. Legacy Finlandisation in an era of change: Finnish security policy after the Cold War

V Evropě dnes existuje pět států, se kterými se pojí dlouhá tradice neutralitní politiky - Švýcarsko, Švédsko, Irsko, Rakousko a Finsko.1 Prostřednictvím své neutrality všechny tyto země vyjadřovaly záměr působit v mezinárodních vztazích pokud možno nezávisle, vyhnout se soupeření velmocí a stát mimo jakékoli vojenské aliance. Všech pět zmíněných zemí zastávalo neutralitní politiku po mnoho desítek nebo dokonce stovek let a je proto jasné, že konkrétní podmínky, za kterých neutralitu přijaly a po většinu doby praktikovaly, už dnes neexistují. Posledním ze zásadních mezníků v evropském mocenském a bezpečnostním uspořádání byl konec studené války a kolaps Sovětského svazu. V souvislosti s tím, že po roce 1991 už v Evropě žádné velmocenské soupeření neprobíhá (alespoň ne v takové podobě, jakou známe z předchozí éry), prochází koncept neutrality v každé dříve neutrální zemi zásadním přehodnocováním, které má najít odpověď na elementární otázku, zda má neutralitní politika v současné Evropě ještě vůbec nějaký smysl.
