The Babtism on the Background of Liturgic Reforms of the 16th and 20th Century.
Pekárek, František ; Holeton, David Ralph (advisor) ; Hradílek, Pavel (referee) ; Kolář, Pavel (referee)
The work Liturgical Reforms and Renewal concerning baptism in the 16th and 20th century explores relationship between liturgical reforms of baptismal rites in the 16th century and contemporary liturgical movement. The main theme of the work is the transformation of Christian initiation at the end of 20th and its relation to the reforms of baptismal rites in the reformation period. The first part of the work describes reforms of Lutheran and Anglican baptismal rites. There are two main sources used for comparison: Luther's Taufbüchleins and first two editions of the Book of Common Prayer. The second part of the work is dedicated to contemporary efforts to renew baptismal rites. The rites of Canadian Anglicans and Lutherans serve as prototypes. The investigation of baptismal rites is preceded by the theological examination of any performed changes. The conclusion of the work transcends its aim when it shows the problems of renewal in wider context. It provides with the typology of the opponents of liturgical movement and tries to bring deeper insight into historical connections which form their attitudes. In the conclusion, we can find author's perspective on the contribution of renewal in baptismal theology and liturgy for the broadest ecumena. This work came into being at the Institute of Ecumenical Studies...

In the first chapter, I introduce the reader to the topic and structure of the dissertation and I mention problems usually encountered by those addressing this topic. The second chapter describes the personality of Henri Groues and his influence on the Emmaüs movement. The following chapter deals with problematic aspects of Abbé Pierre's personality, i.e. his media image and relationship with the church. Finally, the last chapter is devoted to the foundation and development of the Emmaüs movement from their own perspective.

Iconography of the Czech written Utraquist graduals
Šárovcová, Martina ; Homolka, Jaromír (advisor) ; Royt, Jan (referee) ; Holeton, David Ralph (referee)
Iconography of the Czech written Utraquist graduals Abstract: My doctoral thesis is devoted to the iconographic problems of painting decorations of a specific type of liturgical manuscripts. The subject of my doctoral thesis are illuminated chant books (graduals) with Czech texts of Gregorian chant, which originated in the 16th century for the needs of utraquist Confraternities of Litterati. The iconography of illuminations is interpreted with regards to their liturgical and codicological context within single part of the gradual. In the text, I especially accentuate the topics and motives from the whole complex of the themes which deserve attention and which newly appear in the structure of painting decorations or it is possible to interpret them in connection with the haecceity of the (utraquist) iconography and confessional identity. Heuristic compilation of illuminated utraquist chant books, which is the part of the structured catalogue, and interpretation of their iconography, represents the first elaboration which is fundamental to successive study dealing with iconography of single subjects, illustrations of particular saints and patron saints of places and specificity of the utraquist and catholic iconography in the epoch before the battle of White Mountain in Bohemia. My thesis, with regards to...

Kolář, Pavel ; Holeton, David Ralph (advisor) ; Wernisch, Martin (referee) ; Nechutová, Jana (referee)
Svátostná teologie Jakoubka ze Stříbra a její liturgická recepce The Sacramental Theology of Jakoubek of Stříbro and lts Liturgical Reception Mgr. Pavel Kolář, M.T.S. The studies in this dissertation deal with two mutually interrelated topics and almost have the character of two case studies. Their relation one to the other might best be expressed by the general rule lex orandi - lex credendi. Following the initial general introduction, the first two chapters (2. Ordo missae in Three Utraquist Manuscripts and 3. A Comparasion ol the Rite ol the Preparation ol Gifts and Minor Canon) are dedicated to an analysis of three Utraquist liturgical manuscripts and are specifically concemed with their ordo missae and canon minor. AU three manuscripts are dated to the sixteenth century - a more precise dating is still an unresolved question.
Iconography in Ultraquist Theology
Bílková, Milena ; Holeton, David Ralph (advisor) ; Kejř, Jiří (referee) ; Čornej, Petr (referee)
Milena Bílková Ikonografie v utrakvistické teologii Iconography in Ultraquist Theology Utraquism, a Czech religious movement of 15th and 16th centuries, was characterized by a number of theological specifics which also found their reflection in the art of the Utraquist church. There are several particular motifs that enable us to speak about Utraquist iconography. These motifs include depictions of Jan Hus as a saint with his attributes the heretic's hat (originally a sign of degradation) and the stake. The lay chalice, the most visible theological feature of Utraquism, was depicted in various contexts and places, although its emphasis was not a rule. Other topics of Utraquist iconography are communion sub utraque to both infants and adults, the martyrdom of Jerome of Prague and the Martyrs of Kutná Hora, depictions of Žižka as well as pictorial antithesis of the "old" and "new" church.
