Post-synthesis synthesis: Czech kinetic art of the 60's and the following creative techniques of its protagonists

The study analyses situation on Czech, formerly Czechoslovak, art scene during 70's and 80's of the twentieth century in context of the progress of kinetism. It addresses the question whether and how the kinetism as a synthesis of visual arts, architecture, theater, film and music but also science and technology has been promoted after the demise of the group of the same name. The study is divided into the three basic parts. After introducing the problem by attempt to delimit the kinetism on conceptual and temporal basis the first part follows the initial, rather sporadic, attempts of capturing the motion in the visual arts in a period of the first half of twentieth century. The substantial focus of this part is on the work of Zdenek Pesanek. The second part provides a brief insight by comparison and references into the aggradizement period of international kinetism that occurred in the 50s and through to 70s. In parallel with movement in the West it follows two particular groupments of kinetists in the Eastern block - the Muscovite group called Dvizhenie and the Prague's group Synthesis. Reflections of the Socialist Past in the Art of Central European Countries

The dissertation thesis is focused on specific segment of contemporary visual artists from Poland, the Czech Republic, Hungary and the Slovak Republic, whose work reflects the recent past. The thesis maps and interprets artistic reflections of the past with emphasis on the era of socialism in the region of Central Europe, and defines the characteristic features of the generation of artists born in the 70s and their position in the post-socialist situation. These artistic approaches are categorized and anchored in the broad current of the so-called historiographical turn in contemporary art and put in a broader cultural and art historical context. Theory of absence in contemporary Czech art

In my thesis, I focus mainly on the concept of absent in Czech contemporary art. I am trying, using examples of singular pieces, artists and (overal) projects, to examine current art scene and it’s resource. Considering the historical and artistic context, I am searching for the continuous fascination with the subject of void and analysing the strategies neccessary for it’s possible artistic application.
