Dong Qichang's texts on painting and their relationship to Mi Fu's History of Painting

Dong Qichang's Texts on Painting and their Relationship to Mi Fu's History of Painting Michaela PEJČOCHOVÁ Doctoral dissertation summary The study entitled Dong Qichang's Texts on Painting and their Relationship to Mi Fu's History of Painting presents an analysis of the critical texts on painting by two important figures of the old Chinese art world, Dong Qichang (1555-1636) and Mi Fu (1051-1107). It is based on the conviction that old historical and critical treatises on painting record information important for our understanding of the actual painting practice in ancient periods, which is difficult or even impossible to document by the surviving pictorial evidence. Both authors of the texts discussed here were scholars, artists, critics and collectors and counted among the foremost literati of their day - Mi Fu was one of the initiators of the "literati culture" during the Northern Song period (960-1127), while Dong Qichang with his theories was highly influential during its late phase. Their texts thus document literati opinions on the aesthetics and history of painting in their respective periods. Cai Wenji: from Late Han poetess to Song painting theme

The thesis is concerned with the life and work of the poetess Cai Yan 蔡琰 (178-239?), also known under the honorary title Wenji 文姬 , and the way her life experience is later displayed in visual arts. The frst part of the thesis summarizes basic biographical information on Cai Yan based on her biography in the Book of the Later Han (Hou Han shu 后汉书). Cai Yan's original poem Hujia shiba pai 胡笳十八拍 is introduced along with the issues relating to their authenticity. The crucial for this thesis is the other much later poem with the same title and theme written by Liu Shang 刘 商 . It was this piece writing full of emotions which has inspired Song painter to create the narrative painting commissioned by the emperor Gaozong 高宗 . Major part of the thesis consists of analysis of the Tang poem Hujia shiba pai translated traditionally as Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute along with the formal analysis of the most famous surviving narrative scroll from the collection of Metropolitan Museum in New York. The analysis includes description of the sub- themes inspired by a poem Hujia shiba pai attributed to Cai Yan and her biography in the official chronicle. The thesis is concerned with the life and work of the poetess Cai Yan 蔡琰 (178-239?), also known under the honorary title Wenji 文姬, and the way her life experience is later displayed in visual arts. Cai Yan's oeuvre is not too extensive and its authenticity is sometimes questioned, but her story was one of the most popular subject matters in painting since the Song Dynasty. The frst part of the thesis summarizes basic biographical information on Cai Yan based on her biography in the Book of the Later Han (Hou Han shu 后汉书). The author's poems and their different forms as well as the issues relating to their authenticity are introduced here, too. The frst part is concluded by translation of the poem Hujia shiba pai 胡笳十八拍 translated traditionally as Eighteen Songs of a Nomad Flute. The second part of the thesis deals with the issue of narrative painting in China and the painting inspired by the story of the poetess and her writing. Lacquer Wares of the Chu Kingdom in a Mortuary Context

Two tombs M1 and M2 at the excavation sites in Suizhou and Baoshan are compared in order to reveal changes which have occurred during the Warring States period, with focus on the lacquer subjects. There are several ways of development according to historical-cultural introduction. Funeral lacquer objects share more common features than evolutionary differences, though there is a one-century gap between them. Both tombs keep the key informations.
