Picture of the Late Victorian and Edwardian London on the pages of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle's "Holmesiana"
Marková, Zuzana ; Kovář, Martin (advisor) ; Beneš, Zdeněk (referee)
In this bachelor's thesis I am dealing with the reflection of late Victorian and Edwardian London in selected stories from the Sherlock Holmes canon. In order to illustrate and compare the literary fiction with the real face of the city I have selected 14 short stories and 2 novels published between 1887 and 1924. Using individual excerpts, I am trying to colourfully illustrate Holmes' London in the background of the historical image of the city which I view as a progressive metropolis, but also a place beset by poverty and difficult living conditions. In order to create a comprehensive image, the main body of my thesis is preceded by a brief summary of the life of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and an outline of the political situation of the island state and its sprawling empire.
