Towards the Methodological Foundation of Social Capital Theory. How (not) to Measure it in the Czech Republic.

The field of social capital still lacks a recognized general theory. Accordingly, various and sometimes inappropriate measurements are used for it. The present monograph contributes to filling in this gap and provides progress towards the creation of a formalized social capital theory. Starting with the basic concepts of social capital of Bourdieu [1983] and Coleman [1988] we derive a general definition of social capital. Social capital is a property of relationships among individuals that are a resource actors can use and benefit from. Because neither Bourdieu's nor Coleman's concepts are appropriate as a general social capital theory the more current concepts of Putnam [2000], Burt [1992] and Lin [2001] are contested for this purpose. The discussions show that we can distinguish between cultural social capital (generalized trust, norms of reciprocity) and structural social capital (networks) and that we should focus on one of the two. Thus, we focus the latter but we take into account that cultural social capital is a preconditions as well as an outcome of structural social capital. Creation and evaluation of information resources in medicine

A field covering generation and evaluation of the medical information is a broad one. During my doctoral studies I focused on medical information mainly using the evidence-based medicine (EBM) principles. This approach leads to the use of currently best available medical data in the treatment of patients. The EBM methodology might be classified into two basic groups: afferent and efferent one. The afferent part is focused on development of information resources whereas the efferent one promotes optimal use of these resources and a critical application of the retrieved facts. Due to practical reasons (to limit extent of the text) I concentrated in the thesis on only one field of my activity. The text deals mainly with afferent part of EBM, namely with formation of a qualitative and quantitative synthesis of knowledge through compilation of a systematic review and meta-analysis. Compilation of systematic reviews of prognostic markers is discussed in a detail. It is a field not appropriately covered in the Czech literature. The practical outcome documented in the thesis is a description of the systematic review of immunohistochemical prognostic markers in intracranial ependymomas that was created and published by our research team. 3 Abstract Title of a work: Geographical determinants of sport participation in high school students Objectives of the thesis: Identify and evaluate according with the research at selected schools whether geographical location of residence and school, respectively distance between home and school can determinate where students are held leisure and sports activities, in particular. Method: This is a quantiative research using a questionnaire method. Obtained data were evaluated using statistical methods - the percentage methods and methods of frequencies. Results and conclusions: There was found the impact of the distance between residence and school respectively lenght of time spent in transport to the school which determinates choice of leisure and sports activities for students of secondary school. Title: Support of sports in the region around Havlíčkův Brod Objective:The aim of the thesis is to analyze municipalities' approaches to providing support for sports in the region around Havlíčkův Brod, Czech Republic. Methods: A questionnaire survey and interviews were especially employed to obtain data. We have also applied primary and secondary data analysis in our thesis. Results: Organization and staffing are the most lacking areas as regards support of sports within municipalities.
